Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice Night had fallen as they drew near to Belmont. The moon light lay spread among the statues and cypresses in Portia's garden, where on a grassy bank the two lovers, Lorenzo and Jessica, talked together in low antiphons such as lovers use, and in the pauses of their talk gazed and drank in the beauty of the heavens. Word had come that the mistress of the house would return home before daybreak and close upon this came a mes senger with the news that Bassanio, too, might be expected. Lorenzo called for music: no gentler or more gracious welcome could there be for the home-comers, should they be arriving; and if not, still he and Jessica could sit till the moonlight faded, and let the sweet sounds creep in their ears, while the stillness of the garden, the embracing silent night, made harmony with the hidden lutes, as the listening heart might hear its own beating harmonies whispered back from the stars paving the floor of heaven. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Shakespeare's Merchant of Venice: With Introduction, and Notes Explanatory and Critical; For Use in Schools and Classes HY should English Literature be taught in our schools? And, What is the best way of teaching it? These are the questions which I propose to discuss. As preliminary to such discussion, it will, I think, be rightly in place to consider, brie y, what our people are aiming to prepare their children for, and what sort of an education it is the proper business of the school to give; that is to say, what form of mind and character, and what disposition of the faculties, it is meant to impress. Download or read book The Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar Classic Reprint written by William Shakespeare and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-02-19 with total page 232 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Merchant of Venice and Julius Caesar The notes appended to these pages will be found few in comparison with the noteworthy points. There are not many lines of Shakespeare that do not furnish occasion for some sort of comment. Teachers will use their discretion as to the time they shall linger over any given matter. A good rule is to dwell upon passages so long as the pupil's interest does not flag. I have found in my own classes that it is possible 'to advance rapidly, even through matter abounding in difficulties, by distributing the items of research among the individuals of a class. The most shaming kind of recitation is that to which each pupil brings his own preparation, unlike that of any other. To such a recitation all listen with eagerness. In my annotation, as often as it seemed feasible, I have referred the student, for light on special points, to other pas sages in the poet's works. The habit of seeking explana tions of Shakespearian difficulties in Shakespeare himself is of the very first importance. It has seemed to me also de sirable to familiarize the learner in this way with the plays at large, even though it be only to such extent as is implied in turning the leaves and searching for passages and words. These references are to the Globe Shakespeare, published by Macmillan Co. As this book has come to be almost universally recognized by Shakespeare scholars as a stand ard for purposes of reference, and is exceedingly cheap, it may be named as the first requisite among collateral helps for the study of the poet.
