This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 638 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mercersburg Quarterly Review, 1854, Vol. 6 We must not be surprised at the severity and even tyranni cal rigor with which the lessons of subordination were inculca ted. Learned they must be, at any cost, as the indispensable prerequisites to human liberty. And the miseries of the age are attributable not so much to the spirit of the history of the times, as to the mad and determined opposition of blind law lessness. The individual must yield to the historic progress of the age, or be crushed beneath its resistless power. Hence was it that government assumed an arbitrary character, which made a reaction necessary in after times. I repeat it, we must not be surprised at the severity and even cruelty with which the governments of the times were characterized. Even in our own times the principle involved, is approved, and in this age and country finds a practical illus tration. The laws of our government are imperious in their demands, and insist upon obedience with the severest of sanc tions. Life itself is held to be a subordinate interest. And the government of these United States, mild and humane as it is, will not hesitate to assert its majesty and the supremacy of its laws at the expense, if needs be, of millions of treasure, and rivers of human blood. So too in the family; the child that submits not to the authority therein lodged, lays himself oh noxious to the severest penalty which it is in its province to in flict. The reduction then, of the elements of unbridled law lessness, as they confronted the institutions of past history, called forth that terrible rigor which the historic page narrates, and it is not saying too much when we declare that milder measures would not have been adequate to the task. Book Anti Intellectualism in American Life

Download or read book Anti Intellectualism in American Life written by Richard Hofstadter and published by Vintage. This book was released on 2012-01-04 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the 1964 Pulitzer Prize in Nonfiction Anti-Intellectualism in American Life is a book which throws light on many features of the American character. Its concern is not merely to portray the scorners of intellect in American life, but to say something about what the intellectual is, and can be, as a force in a democratic society. "As Mr. Hofstadter unfolds the fascinating story, it is no crude battle of eggheads and fatheads. It is a rich, complex, shifting picture of the life of the mind in a society dominated by the ideal of practical success." —Robert Peel in the Christian Science Monitor

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The mixture of hostility and fascination with which native-born Protestants viewed the "foreign" practices of the "immigrant" church is the focus of Jenny Franchot's cultural, literary, and religious history of Protestant attitudes toward Roman Catholicism in nineteenth-century America. Franchot analyzes the effects of religious attitudes on historical ideas about America's origins and destiny. She then focuses on the popular tales of convent incarceration, with their Protestant "maidens" and lecherous, tyrannical Church superiors. Religious captivity narratives, like those of Indian captivity, were part of the ethnically, theologically, and sexually charged discourse of Protestant nativism. Discussions of Stowe, Longfellow, Hawthorne, and Lowell—writers who sympathized with "Romanism" and used its imaginative properties in their fiction—further demonstrate the profound influence of religious forces on American national character. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: John Calvin in Context offers a comprehensive overview of Calvin's world. Including essays from social, cultural, feminist, and intellectual historians, each specially commissioned for this volume, the book considers the various early modern contexts in which Calvin worked and wrote. It captures his concerns for Northern humanism, his deep involvement in the politics of Geneva, his relationships with contemporaries, and the polemic necessities of responding to developments in Rome and other Protestant sects, notably Lutheran and Anabaptist. The volume also explores Calvin's tasks as a pastor and doctor of the church, who was constantly explicating the text of scripture and applying it to the context of sixteenth-century Geneva, as well as the reception of his role in the Reformation and beyond. Demonstrating the complexity of the world in which Calvin lived, John Calvin in Context serves as an essential research tool for scholars and students of early modern Europe.

Book Our Authorized Bible Vindicated

Download or read book Our Authorized Bible Vindicated written by Benjamin George Wilkinson and published by TEACH Services, Inc.. This book was released on 2014-10-29 with total page 279 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Bible is an all-time bestseller, the most translated book, and the most controversial title. Throughout the ages this precious book has been persecuted and preserved, yet many today are weak in the faith and, therefore, question the inspiration of the Bible. Our Authorized Bible Vindicated explores the history of the Bible from the earliest manuscripts until now, demonstrating how it has been preserved in its entirety. Today more than ever there is a need to return to the authentic roots of our spiritual foundation. With the lines between truth and falsity blurring, it is imperative that we discern what is accurate and what is not. Satan is working overtime to the point, if it were possible, of deceiving the very elect through faulty Bible translations and a dismissal of the Word of God. This book seeks to confirm and establish faith in the Bible, an infallible book that is the key to all of life's questions.
