This volume is designed to furnish concise biographical sketches of those who are at present active in intellectual, industrial and commercial life in South Carolina. It is not a collection of eulogies nor an aggregation of business advertisements. The compilation has been made without reference to the sale of the book, and in this important respect it claims to be more valuable than any other work of the kind ever attempted. It is not easy to estimate the difficulties encountered in a work of this kind, where no single standard of selection can be adopted. The Editor has been greatly aided by suggestions from men of recognized discretion in different parts of the State, who furnished lists of names of those whose past achievements or present prominence warrant a place in this biographical encyclopedia of living South Carolinians. It is not claimed that every obstacle has been overcome, because the plan is comprehensive and embraces a variety of interests; but more than ordinary exertions have been made to secure accuracy and to make the work representative. The information has been obtained largely from original sources and is for the first time presented to the public. The interest taken in the work by those whose relation to public affairs have put them in position to be of service has exceeded the expectations of the publisher, who takes this opportunity to thank the various persons throughout the State to whom he is indebted for important contributions.
