Download or read book Odin s Ways written by Annette Lassen and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2021-12-24 with total page 309 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is about the Old Norse god Odin. It includes references to all occurrences of Odin in the Old Norse/Icelandic texts, including Saxo’s Gesta Danorum, the eddic poems, Snorri’s Edda, and Ynglinga saga and analyses the high medieval reception and literary representations of Odin rather than the religious character of the god. This is the only existing study of Odin in all the Old Norse/Icelandic texts and applies a contextual method: the different guises of Odin are studied on the basis of the various textual contexts and on their background in the literary and Christian intellectual milieu of the time. Contrary to existing studies, this method is non-reductive in that it does not aim at providing a synthesis about Odin’s original nature on the basis of the differing textual uses of Odin in the Middle Ages. The book argues that the perceived complexity of Odin, often highlighted in research, is first and foremost a function of the complex textual material spanning a wide variety of genres each with its particular literary conventions and of the reception of Odin in early modern and modern mythological studies.

Book The Havamal The Sayings of Odin the Wise One

Download or read book The Havamal The Sayings of Odin the Wise One written by Anon E Mouse and published by Abela Publishing Ltd. This book was released on 2014-04-23 with total page 93 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THERE existed from very early times a collection of Norse proverbs and wise counsels, which were attributed to Odin (Othin) just as the Biblical proverbs were to Solomon. This collection was known as "The High One's Words," and forms the basis of the present poem. Few gnomic collections in the world's literary history present sounder wisdom more tersely expressed than the Havamal. Like the Book of Proverbs it occasionally rises to lofty heights of poetry. If it presents the worldly wisdom of a violent race, it also shows noble ideals of loyalty, truth, and unfaltering courage. Over time other poems were added to the original content dealing with wisdom which seemed, by their nature, to imply that the speaker was Odin. Thus a catalogue of runes, or charms, was tacked on, and also a set of proverbs. Here and there bits of verse crept in; and of course the loose structure of the poem made it easy for any reciter to insert new stanzas almost at will. This curious miscellany is what we now have as the Havamal Five separate elements are pretty clearly recognizable: (1) the Havamal proper (stanzas 1-80), a collection of proverbs and counsels for the conduct of life; (2) the Loddfafnismol (stanzas 111-138), a collection somewhat similar to the first, but specifically addressed to a certain Loddfafnir; (3) the Ljothatal (stanzas 147-165), a collection of charms; (4) the lovestory of Odin and Billing's daughter (stanzas 96-102); (5) the story of how Odin got the mead of poetry from the maiden Gunnloth (stanzas 103-110). There is also a brief passage (stanzas 139-146) telling how Odin won the runes, this passage being a natural introduction to the Ljothatal, and doubtless brought into the poem for that reason. 33% of the net profit from the sale of this book will be donated to charities.

Years after the Second Civil War divided the United States in half, society has turned to an idealized, sanitized, and medicated version of itself. The corporations have won. The great shadow of the hero of the Second Civil War, Carmichael Barnakey, hangs heavily over his grandson, Odin, who is now the producer for the television program that determines the president of the Northern States of America. Odin is dealing with low ratings and unpredictable candidates as well as his overbearing father and the oppressive memory of his grandfather. Odin dreams of quitting and becoming an artist like the famous propagandist Rozko Pierre. Rozko, meanwhile, is preparing for what should be his greatest achievementa government-sponsored exhibition of portraits of Carmichael Barnakey. But he is wracked with apathy. Addicted to government-sanctioned pills, Rozko considers himself a fraud, a sellout who sacrificed his one true love for fame. Dakota Woodley, on the other hand, has never known love. Since video games have replaced actual wars, Dakota has become the Supreme Commander of the Army at the age of sixteen. Being under constant guard and privy to government secrets, Dakota is being suffocated by his supplicating but demanding mother, and not allowed any real social life. His world is thrown into chaos when he meets the Chairman of the Chinese Army, a brilliant girl his own age who just may be his match, and better. We lusted for an even greater prize... It is the one prize that can never be lost or stolen or burnt. And we would find it in Miklagard... Raven and the Wolfpack have suffered. Good men have died and the treasures they fought so hard for have been lost. But to such men as these there is something more valuable than silver. That thing is fame -- for fame is the saga-story that a Viking warrior leaves behind when he dies. Now the sea road leads to Constantinople, which Norsemen call Miklagard, the Great City, for it is there that they might find both riches and glory. But the Great City is far away and the voyage there takes the Fellowship in to unknown waters where they face new enemies. From the wind-whipped marshes of the Carmargue to the crumbling walls and arenas of a decaying Rome, Raven must fight harder for his life than ever before. He must prove himself to others -- and he must watch his back too, for an old enemy is sharpening his treacherous claws. The young warrior with the blood-tainted eye will even challenge the Norns of fate who, it is said, have spun his doom. But the Valkyries are stalking, eager for new heroes to take to Ódin's hall. The clash of sword and axe and spear will ring out in Miklagard and the Fellowship will pay a high price in blood for the fame they seek.
