Book excerpt: Catherine Carter's first volume of poetry exudes a genuinely classical quality-cool-eyed and clear-eyed, intelligent, unsentimental, self-aware, and witty in the fullest and best sense. Carter takes our evolutionary development in the womb as a departure point for remembering or imagining our links with nonhuman animals, which make us feel both alien and alive. She writes of being "raised by wolves," that "everyone marries into another species," and of "hearing things" in the voices of the rattlesnake plantain or the apple core. With an offbeat, sometimes-gallows humor-the poems' subjects range from roadkill to stingray-human sex to a traffic ticket for avoiding toads on the road-that looks at our connections of blood, home, and exile, The Memory of Gills nonetheless speaks of hope that we belong where we are.Last night or rather this morning she called on the telephone in my dream. She thought it was Thanksgiving, and she didn't know she was dead. I didn't want to tell her she was dead, or going to die this May, which in the dream was still next May. I told her about the job I still had last Thanksgiving, tried to remember. My mother was there and spoke to her; no one knew quite what to say except love -- and before that I woke up. She called, across six months, six feet; she called us, and we didn't know how to go or what to say. Dead was too heavy, we couldn't say that; we couldn't say anything really. Except love, which this one time ought to have been enough, but, as it always is, was nothing like enough. -- "The Telephone in My Dream"

Book Pour Me a Life

Download or read book Pour Me a Life written by A.A. Gill and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2016-09-27 with total page 290 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Serialized in Esquire, A.A. Gill's Pour Me a Life is a riveting meditation on the author's alcoholism, seen through the lens of the memories that remain, and the transformative moments that saved him from a lifelong addiction and early death. “Pour Me a Life is an unapologetically honest, raw, and often harrowing account of the life of a man who, up until now, we only thought we knew. Here is A.A. Gill at his best. A real-life Bright Lights, Big City.” —Eric Ripert, chef and co-owner of Le Bernardin, and author of the New York Timesbestseller 32 Yolks Best known for his hysterically funny and often scathing restaurant reviews for the London Sunday Times, A.A. Gill’s Pour Me a Life is a riveting memoir of the author’s alcoholism, seen through the lens of the memories that remain, and the transformative moments in art, food, religion, and family that saved him from a lifelong addiction and early death. By his early twenties, at London’s prestigious Saint Martin’s art school, journalist Adrian Gill was entrenched in alcoholism. He writes from the handful of memories that remain, of drunken conquests with anonymous women, of waking to morbid hallucinations, of emptying jacket pockets that “were like tiny crime scenes,” helping him puzzle his whereabouts back together. Throughout his recollections, Gill traces his childhood, his early diagnosis of dyslexia, the deep sense of isolation when he was sent to boarding school at age eleven, the disappearance of his only brother, whom he has not seen for decades. When Gill was confronted at age thirty by a doctor who questioned his drinking, he answered honestly for the first time, not because he was ready to stop, but because his body was too damaged to live much longer. Gill was admitted to a thirty-day rehab center—then a rare and revolutionary concept in England—and has lived three decades of his life sober. Written with clear-eyed honesty and empathy, Pour Me a Life is a haunting account of addiction, its exhilarating power and destructive force, and is destined to be a classic of its kind.

Book The Memory Keeper s Daughter

Download or read book The Memory Keeper s Daughter written by Kim Edwards and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2006-05-30 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A #1 New York Times bestseller by Kim Edwards, The Memory Keeper’s Daughter is a brilliantly crafted novel of parallel lives, familial secrets, and the redemptive power of love Kim Edwards’s stunning novel begins on a winter night in 1964 in Lexington, Kentucky, when a blizzard forces Dr. David Henry to deliver his own twins. His son, born first, is perfectly healthy, but the doctor immediately recognizes that his daughter has Down syndrome. Rationalizing it as a need to protect Norah, his wife, he makes a split second decision that will alter all of their lives forever. He asks his nurse, Caroline, to take the baby away to an institution and never to reveal the secret. Instead, she disappears into another city to raise the child herself. So begins this beautifully told story that unfolds over a quarter of a century—in which these two families, ignorant of each other, are yet bound by the fateful decision made that winter night long ago. A family drama, The Memory Keeper’s Daughter explores every mother's silent fear: What would happen if you lost your child and she grew up without you? It is also an astonishing tale of love and how the mysterious ties that hold a family together help us survive the heartache that occurs when long-buried secrets are finally uncovered.

Book Book of Wisdom by John Gill

Download or read book Book of Wisdom by John Gill written by James J Maccabbee Company and published by Xulon Press. This book was released on 2009-04 with total page 502 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the Author John Gill (1697 - 1771) was born in Kettering, Northamptonshire. In his youth, he attended Kettering Grammar School, mastering the Latin classics and learning Greek by age eleven. The young scholar also had a love for Hebrew which would follow him throughout his life. At about twelve years of age, Gill heard a sermon from his pastor, William Wallis, whose text came from Genesis 3:9, "And the Lord called unto Adam, and said unto him, where art thou?" He reflected often on the message of Wallis' sermon and it eventually led to his conversion. It was not until seven years later, however, that young John made a public profession of his faith in Christ, when he was almost nineteen years of age. His first pastoral work was as an intern at age twenty one, and he later became a pastor in Southwark, England. His pastorate lasted 51 years. Gill was an English Bible scholar, and a prolific writer who authored among other things, an expository commentary on the entire Bible. John Gill was a profound scholar whose ministry in some fashion still touches millions of people worldwide. About this Book Unlike human wisdom, the Book of Proverbs is of divine inspiration. The Book of Wisdom is presented as a devotional from John Gill's commentary on these Proverbs. Book of Wisdom is a tribute offered by the James J. MacCabbee Company to Pastor John Gills' lifetime of brilliant work. As Proverbs 8:1, "Doth not Wisdom cry?" This daily devotional is prepared for governmental leaders, leaders in the news and entertainment industries, clergy and laypersons; employees and employers; spouses, parents and children. In fact Wisdom is offered to "anyone who has ears to hear" (see Matthew 13:9). Those who receive such Wisdom as presented here will not be disappointed.
