Book The Floer Memorial Volume

Download or read book The Floer Memorial Volume written by Helmut Hofer and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Andreas Floer died on May 15, 1991 an untimely and tragic death. His visions and far-reaching contributions have significantly influenced the developments of mathematics. His main interests centered on the fields of dynamical systems, symplectic geometry, Yang-Mills theory and low dimensional topology. Motivated by the global existence problem of periodic solutions for Hamiltonian systems and starting from ideas of Conley, Gromov and Witten, he developed his Floer homology, providing new, powerful methods which can be applied to problems inaccessible only a few years ago. This volume opens with a short biography and three hitherto unpublished papers of Andreas Floer. It then presents a collection of invited contributions, and survey articles as well as research papers on his fields of interest, bearing testimony of the high esteem and appreciation this brilliant mathematician enjoyed among his colleagues. Authors include: A. Floer, V.I. Arnold, M. Atiyah, M. Audin, D.M. Austin, S.M. Bates, P.J. Braam, M. Chaperon, R.L. Cohen, G. Dell' Antonio, S.K. Donaldson, B. D'Onofrio, I. Ekeland, Y. Download or read book Gribov Memorial Volume Quarks Hadrons And Strong Interactions Proceedings Of The Memorial Workshop Devoted To The 75th Birthday Of V N Gribov written by Yuri L Dokshitzer and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2006-06-07 with total page 570 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vladimir Naumovich Gribov was one of the most outstanding theorists, a key figure in the creation of the modern elementary particle physics. His many discoveries are famous and well accepted by the physics community (Gribov-Regge theory of high energy hadron interactions, Gribov vacuum pole — Pomeron, Reggeon field theory, parton evolution equations, neutrino oscillations, Gribov copies in non-Abelian gauge field theories, etc.); Some of his ideas look unacceptable and strange at the first glance. Even at the second glance.Nowadays, under the weight of new theoretical developments and experimental results, his ideas are receiving the recognition they deserve. The Gribov Memorial Workshop, organized on his 75th birthday in Budapest, Hungary in 2005, clearly demonstrated the wealth and fertilization force of his ideas. Close colleagues, younger followers, world experts of the quark-hadron world have gathered together to display new angles of the Gribov heritage. And to remember the personality of a great man. This book collects the talks presented at, and contributed to, the Gribov-75 Memorial Workshop.

This book is the definitive, official companion volume to the National September 11 Memorial & Museum. It provides visitors with a lasting record of their experience at the museum, and tells the story of September 11 through essays on and photographs of the installations and thoughtfully curated artifacts that serve as touchstones to the day and its aftermath. It also provides a behind-the-scenes glimpse—through photographs and planning concepts—into the evolution of the museum from idea to finished entity. By maximizing the visual impact through the innovative use of photography and design, the book immerses the reader in the visceral emotion of both the museum and the day—September 11—itself. No Day Shall Erase You offers an authoritative narrative of 9/11, as it is presented in the National September 11 Memorial & Museum, and as told by Alice M. Greenwald, the museum’s director, and other key staff who planned and built the museum. Focusing on the historic impact of the event, No Day Shall Erase You recognizes the central importance 9/11 has in America’s national memory, as well as putting the day into context fifteen years later.

This book was released on 2014-12-31 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Kenneth Geddes Wilson (1936–2013) — intellectual giant, Nobel Laureate, intrepid scholar, visionary thinker, pioneering physicist and a person of conscience — made seminal contributions to the foundations of contemporary physics and undertook tireless efforts to bring reforms in the educational system. The purpose of bringing out this volume is to commemorate the memory of Ken Wilson and to preserve the legacy of his ground-breaking advances. This volume brings together a collection of articles written by colleagues of Ken Wilson as well as fellow physicists and scholars — some of who knew him personally and others who are knowledgeable about his sterling contributions to the foundations of theoretical physics. The work of Ken Wilson covers many diverse and apparently unrelated fields, all of which were brought under a common paradigm by the creative and original development and application of the mathematics of quantum field theory. As observed by Wilson, “the intuitive ideas” of quantum field theory and of the entire program of renormalization, “were encased in a thick shell of formalism” and it is widely acknowledged that it was Wilson's visionary approach to quantum field theory that cut through this thick shell of formalism.Based on his deep understanding that the essence of quantum field theory is that it describes a system with infinitely many degrees of freedom, Wilson used the mathematics of quantum field theory and of the renormalization group to solve the problem of classical phase transitions — which consists of the cooperative behavior of infinitely many classical degrees of freedom. In doing this he greatly enhanced the domain of quantum field theory beyond the orbit of quantum systems as well as bringing new insights to quantum field theory from other disciplines. To commemorate the memory of Ken Wilson, many leading and illustrious physicists have agreed to contribute to this volume. These include Murray Gell-Mann, Steven Weinberg, David Gross, Alexander Polyakov, John Schwarz, Kerson Huang, Hao Bailin, Alexander Zamolodchikov, Anthony Zee, Ramamurti Shankar, Edouard Brezin and David Wallace.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ludwig Faddeev is widely recognized as one of the titans of 20th century mathematical physics. His fundamental contributions to scattering theory, quantum gauge theories, and the theory of classical and quantum completely integrable systems played a key role in shaping modern mathematical physics. Ludwig Faddeev's major achievements include the solution of the three-body problem in quantum mechanics, the mathematical formulation of quantum gauge theories and corresponding Feynman rules, Hamiltonian and algebraic methods in mathematical physics, with applications to gauge theories with anomalies, quantum systems with constraints and solitons, the discovery of the algebraic structure of classical and quantum integrable systems and quantum groups, and solitons with the topology of knots. Faddeev's name is imprinted in many areas of mathematics and theoretical physics, including "Faddeev's equations" and "Faddeev's Green function" in scattering theory, "Faddeev-Popov ghosts" and "Faddeev-Popov determinant" in gauge theories, "Gardner-Faddeev-Zakharov bracket" for the KdV equation, "Faddeev-Zamolodchikov algebra" in quantum integrable systems, "Faddeev-Reshetikhin-Takhtajan construction" in the theory of quantum groups, knotted solitons in the "Skyrme-Faddeev model" and many others. Ludwig Faddeev founded the St. Petersburg school of modern mathematical physics and distinguished himself by serving the mathematics community for over three decades including his leadership of the International Mathematical Union in the period of 1986-1990. He was conferred numerous prizes and memberships of prestigious institutions in recognition of the importance of his work. These include the Dannie Heineman Prize for Mathematical Physics, the Dirac Medal, the Max Planck Medal, the Shaw Prize and the Lomonosov Gold Medal among others. A gathering of contributions from some of the biggest names in mathematics and physics, this volume serves as a tribute to this legendary figure. Volume contributors include: Fields medalist Sir Michael Atiyah, Jürg Fröhlich, Roman Jackiw, Vladimir Korepin, Nikita Nekrasov, André Neveu, Alexander M Polyakov, Samson Shatashvili, Fedor Smirnov as well as Nobel laureates Frank Wilczek and C N Yang.

Benson and Mike are two young guys who live together in Houston. Mike is a Japanese American chef at a Mexican restaurant and Benson's a Black day care teacher, and they've been together for a few years—good years—but now they're not sure why they're still a couple. There's the sex, sure, and the meals Mike cooks for Benson, and, well, they love each other. But when Mike finds out his estranged father is dying in Osaka just as his acerbic Japanese mother, Mitsuko, arrives in Texas for a visit, Mike picks up and flies across the world to say goodbye. In Japan he undergoes an extraordinary transformation, discovering the truth about his family and his past. Back home, Mitsuko and Benson are stuck living together as unconventional roommates, an absurd domestic situation that ends up meaning more to each of them than they ever could have predicted. Without Mike's immediate pull, Benson begins to push outwards, realizing he might just know what he wants out of life and have the goods to get it. Both men will change in ways that will either make them stronger together, or fracture everything they've ever known. And just maybe they'll all be okay in the end.
