The Island of New-York is the most beautiful island that I have ever seen. Hessian Officer, in "Stone's Revolutionary Letters," 1891. She is a Mart of Nations. The crowning city, whose merchants are princes, whose traffickers are the honorable of the earth. Isaiah, xxiii. History maketh a young man to be old, without either wrinkles or gray hairs, privileging him with the experience of age without either the infirmities or inconveniences thereof. Thomas Fuller. This is a great fault in a chronicler, to turn parasite: an absolute history should be in fear of none; neither should he write anything more than truth, for friendship, or else for hate, but keep himself equal and constant in all his discourses. Simon N. H. Linguet. Industrious persons, by an exact and scrupulous diligence and observation, out of the monuments, names, words, proverbs, traditions, private recordes and evidences, fragments of stories, passages of bookes that concern not story, and the like, we doe save and recover somewhat from the deluge of Time. Francis Bacon. They who make researches into Antiquity may be said to passe often through many dark lobbies and dusky places before they come to the Aula lucis, the great hall of light; they must repair to old Archives and peruse many molded and inoth-eaten records, and so bring to light, as it were, out of darkness, to inform the present world what the former did, and make us see truth through our Ancestor's eyes. James Howell. I was surprised to find how few, if any, of my fellow-citizens were aware that New-York had ever been called New Amsterdam, or had heard of the names of its early Dutch governors, or cared a straw about their ancient Dutch progenitors. A history to serve as a foundation, on which other historians may hereafter raise a noble superstructure, swelling in process of time, until Knickerbocker's New-York may be equally voluminous with Gibbou's Rome, or Hume and Smollett's England. Book James Monroe

Download or read book James Monroe written by Tim McGrath and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-05-04 with total page 753 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The extraordinary life of James Monroe: soldier, senator, diplomat, and the last Founding Father to hold the presidency, a man who helped transform thirteen colonies into a vibrant and mighty republic. “A first-rate account of a remarkable life.”—Jon Meacham • “Fascinating.” —H. W. Brands • “Captivating... Highly recommended.”—Nathaniel Philbrick • “A luminous portrait of the most underappreciated of our Founders.”—Joel Richard Paul • “Excellent.”—Library Journal (starred review) Monroe lived a life defined by revolutions. From the battlefields of the War for Independence, to his ambassadorship in Paris in the days of the guillotine, to his own role in the creation of Congress's partisan divide, he was a man who embodied the restless spirit of the age. He was never one to back down from a fight, whether it be with Alexander Hamilton, with whom he nearly engaged in a duel (prevented, ironically, by Aaron Burr), or George Washington, his hero turned political opponent. This magnificent new biography vividly re-creates the epic sweep of Monroe’s life: his near-death wounding at Trenton and a brutal winter at Valley Forge; his pivotal negotiations with France over the Louisiana Purchase; his deep, complex friendships with Thomas Jefferson and James Madison; his valiant leadership when the British ransacked the nation’s capital and burned down the Executive Mansion; and Monroe’s lifelong struggle to reckon with his own complicity in slavery. Elected the fifth president of the United States in 1816, this fiercest of partisans sought to bridge divisions and sow unity, calming turbulent political seas and inheriting Washington's mantle of placing country above party. Over his two terms, Monroe transformed the nation, strengthening American power both at home and abroad. Critically acclaimed author Tim McGrath has consulted an extensive array of primary sources, many rarely seen since Monroe's own time, to conjure up this fascinating portrait of an essential American statesman and president.

Book The History of the City of Albany New York

Download or read book The History of the City of Albany New York written by Arthur James Weise and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 614 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the City of Albany, New York: From the Discovery of the Great River in 1524, by Verrazzano, to the Present Time Although written two hundred and sixty years after the occupation of the site of the city of Albany by the first settlers, this work presents a number of facts contradicting certain statements respecting that event and others preceding it. It will be seen in the first chapter that Henry Hudson, the English navigator, was not the discoverer nor the first explorer of the river which now bears his name. The Grande River, as the Hudson was first geographically designated, was discovered in 1524 by Giovanni da Verrazzano, who had been commissioned to make discoveries of new countries by Francis I., king of France. Shortly afterward it was ascended to its navigable height by French seamen trading for furs with the Indians living on its shores. The title of the French to the discovered territory was perfected by occupation. Early in the sixteenth century they built, as it appears, two forts, one on the island where the city of New York is, and another on Castle Island, near the site of Albany. When the first vessel conveying emigrants from Amsterdam, Holland, to the country of the Grande River reached the mouth of the noble stream, the officer of the French barque, anchored there, not only declared the fact of the previous possession of the attractive domain by his countrymen but peremptorily forbade the occupation of this part of New France by the Dutch usurpers. Book Memorial History of the City of Philadelphia Vol 1

Download or read book Memorial History of the City of Philadelphia Vol 1 written by John Russell Young and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-22 with total page 620 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memorial History of the City of Philadelphia, Vol. 1: From Its First Settlement to the Year 1895; Narrative and Critical History 1681-1895 Memorial History, now submitted to the public in these volumes, could appear at no more fitting time than in these closing years Of the Nineteenth Century. The Memorial History of New York holds a standard place in our literature. Its publishers have accepted the present under taking, and will follow the lines laid down in that sumptuous work. Guided by that experience, the present history will have features distinct from those in the New York publication. The first volume, which now goes from the press, will be a consecutive narrative of Philadelphia from the earliest to the present time. The second volume will embrace special chapters from writers of learning and eminence, illustrating in detail the rise of the city, what has been done towards free municipal government, the contributions Of Phila delphia to literature, art, religion, finance, and those vast industrial enterprises which command the attention and admiration of the world. There is no study more instructive than that of the building of a city, - for the city is an epitome Of national thought and ambition. The chronicles from which have been drawn the sources of this narrative, show that the highest phase of American achievement is expressed in the development of Philadelphia. While we note the splendor, the triumphs, perhaps, likewise the limitations of American character - we see the same principle of religious freedom which came with Penn, the magnanimous philosophy Of Franklin, the philanthropy of Girard, the financial foresight of Biddle - the achievements Of those captains Of industry who are winning victories of peace which add to the renown of the age. The third volume will be what is called The Family History of Philadelphia. It will present, as far as can be attained, a chrono logical and genealogical table Of every representative family who has resided in Philadelphia since the arrival of Penn. It is proposed to embrace whoever may have attained distinction in any walk Of life professional men, citizens in business, soldiers, those who have received civic and political honors. Great pains have been taken to make this thorough. Available archives, such as are found in our public libraries, historical societies, court registers, church records, have been carefully studied, to the end that the volume may possess entire accuracy. The editor has received from private sources valua ble information, and whatever may contribute to a complete history of the families Of those who have made Philadelphia, will be grate fully received.
