Book excerpt: Perhaps the most famous of all Napoleonic memoirs to be written in any language are those written by Marbot. They stand in a league of their own. Napoleon, himself left a donation of 100,000 to him, for his refutation of General Rogniat's work - to quote Napoleon's will "I recommend him to continue to write in defense of the glory of the French armies, and to confound their calumniators and apostates." So entertaining and full of vivid details that Sir Arthur Conan Doyle fictionalized them into his adventures of Brigadier Gerard. In this second volume, de Marbot continues his varied adventures under Napoleon's eagles, He writes of the battle of Wagram and the death of General Lasalle the finest light cavalry commander of the time. He is assigned to Masséna's campaign to conquer Portugal in 1810 and faces his opponents at Busaco and records the features of the impregnable Line of Torres Vedras. More interesting than the mere descriptions of the battles, combats and affairs he is involved in, are the intrigues and fall-outs at the Headquarters between Marshal Masséna and most of his divisional generals including the famous Marshal Ney, sometimes over his military handling of the campaign and at others over his bringing his mistress Miss---X. with him. He provides a somewhat skewed but vivid account of the battle of Fuentes d'Oñoro in 1811 and withholds no venom in his descriptions of Masséna in particular, and also the other bickering generals, controlling their fiefdoms in the Peninsular. He joins the 23rd Chasseurs-à-Cheval for the campaign in Russia. His unit is part of the flank guard for the Grande Armée's push to Moscow and provides details of the battle go Polotsk. He gives an incisive portrait of Marshal Gouvion Saint-Cyr, who he portrays as brilliant but cold and eccentric. Present at the crossing of the Beresina, he recounts the woes of the army he finds in pieces after the retreat from Moscow, beaming with pride at the state of his regiment. He moves rather briskly into the wars of German liberation and the epoch defining battle of Leipzig in 1813. He describes the action as best as any eye-witness can of three days of rolling battle and carnage can be. Bitterly and with some passion, he speaks of Napoleon's German allies turning on the French. He is rather fulsome in his criticism of his senior commanders especially Exelmans. The campaign of 1814 in defence of France is but briefly covered, and the 1815 campaign not at all. Contains portrait of de Marbot from 1812 as a lieutenant-general, and maps illustrating the battle of Leipzig. Additional notes have been added to this edition. Based upon a vast range of contemporary sources, this book suggests that the Cheer wielded genuine power as a true 'weapon of war'. This book first surveys the history of acclamations in battle worldwide and British battle-cries from all periods, before addressing the question of what the British Cheer actually sounded like. Issues of acoustics, physics and the psychology of battlefield morale are considered, along with commentaries from significant military scholars throughout history. Examination of the Napoleonic-era Cheer then reveals the practically invincible 'recipe' of volley-cheer-charge that propelled the British Army to victory upon victory. Comparison is drawn with French and other national patterns of vocalizing, along with analysis of those occasions when the Cheer might be suppressed. This study encompasses a vast canvas of place and time in pursuit of the elusive yet galvanizing Cheer: from the Mahratta wars in India, through campaigns in Egypt, the Mediterranean, Flanders, the Caribbean and South America, as well as the war of 1812. The Peninsular and Waterloo campaigns feature prominently as the Cheer is heard thrillingly from Vimeiro to Talavera, Salamanca to Vitoria, Orthez to Toulouse and the shocking siege of Badajoz to the charge of the Scots Greys on the ridge of Mont Saint Jean. Anyone interested in the wars of Revolutionary France and Napoleon, the British army, the career of the Duke of Wellington, or indeed the wider questions of the psychological motivations of combat will find this book illuminating and thought-provoking.

As an introduction to the study of that period, it seemed desirable to give some account of the course of government during those 340 years which had elapsed since the first Anglo-Norman set foot upon the Irish shore. And, seeing that Teutonic invaders had effected a lodgment about three centuries and a half before Henry II.’s accession, it was hardly possible to avoid saying something about the men who built the towns which enabled his subjects to keep a firm grip upon the island. Lastly, it seemed well at the very outset to touch lightly upon the peculiarities of that Celtic system with which the King of England found himself suddenly confronted. Agricola took military possession of south-western Scotland partly in the hope of being able to invade Ireland. He had heard that the climate and people did not differ much from those of Britain, and he knew that the harbours were much frequented by merchants. He believed that annexation would tend to consolidate the Roman power in Britain, Gaul, and Spain, and kept by him for some time a petty Irish king who had been expelled by his own tribe, and to whom he professed friendship on the chance of turning him to account. Agricola thought there would be no great difficulty in conquering the island, which he rightly conjectured to be smaller than Britain and larger than Sicily or Sardinia. ‘I have often,’ says Tacitus, ‘heard him say that Ireland could be conquered and occupied with a single legion and a few auxiliaries, and that the work in Britain would be easier if the Roman arms could be made visible on all sides, and liberty, as it were, removed out of sight.’ Agricola, like many great men after him, might have found the task harder than his barbarous guest had led him to suppose; and in any case fate had not ordained that Ireland should ever know the Roman Peace. It was reserved for another petty king, after the lapse of nearly 1,100 years, to introduce an organised foreign power into Ireland, and to attach the island to an empire whose possessions were destined to be far greater than those of Imperial Rome.
