Book The United States and Latin America

Download or read book The United States and Latin America written by Fredrick B. Pike and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2010-07-05 with total page 465 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The lazy greaser asleep under a sombrero and the avaricious gringo with money-stuffed pockets are only two of the negative stereotypes that North Americans and Latin Americans have cherished during several centuries of mutual misunderstanding. This unique study probes the origins of these stereotypes and myths and explores how they have shaped North American impressions of Latin America from the time of the Pilgrims up to the end of the twentieth century. Fredrick Pike's central thesis is that North Americans have identified themselves with "civilization" in all its manifestations, while viewing Latin Americans as hopelessly trapped in primitivism, the victims of nature rather than its masters. He shows how this civilization-nature duality arose from the first European settlers' perception that nature—and everything identified with it, including American Indians, African slaves, all women, and all children—was something to be conquered and dominated. This myth eventually came to color the North American establishment view of both immigrants to the United States and all our neighbors to the south.

Book A Museum of Faiths

Download or read book A Museum of Faiths written by Eric Jozef Ziolkowski and published by . This book was released on 1993 with total page 392 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reexamines the meaning and significance of the first World's Parliament of Religions and its impact on the development of the academic study of religion. Held in Chicago in 1893, the Parliament attracted the participation of religious leaders from different faiths and a smaller number of academics who studied religion from what they called "scientific" perspectives. Following an introduction by the editor, the essays are organized into three sections. Part I reissues six papers on comparative religion from the Parliament's original proceedings. Part II contains two articles, both written within a year of the Parliament, that express an early appraisal of the significance of the Parliament for world religious history and the comparative study of religion. A third and final Part contains eight contemporary essays reassessing the Parliament itself and its impact on interfaith dialogue and comparative religion.

Book Urban Intersections

Download or read book Urban Intersections written by Sidney H. Bremer and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Theodore Dreiser, Upton Sinclair, and Nathanael West went on to describe the alienating machinery of the city, other writers were exploring life on New York's Jewish Lower East Side, in Harlem during its renaissance, in the South, and even in Chicago, in stories of home within the city, of struggling toward social identity, of dignity and strength. Bremer argues that these works constitute a countertradition worthy of attention. Beginning with a discussion of how we define texts as "urban," Bremer shows how city-town imagery in literature emphasizes flexibility, communal values, and multiple perspectives as characters create and interpret newborn American cities. She then shifts from this regional perspective to post-Romantic, turn-of-the-century Chicago as the national epitome of literature's anti-natural economic city.
