Book excerpt: This collection of 150 daily devotionals came into existence at Houston Methodist Willowbrook Hospital. Ideas and stories may have taken flight somewhere along the way, but ultimately they were generated from the spiritual care office, usually early in the mornings. What started as a monologue quickly turned into a dialogue as staff and then guests and patients began picking them up and responding, turning them into holy conversations. While some of the stories are hospital-based, the vast majority came out of author Mark H. Youngs life experiences, illustrating that Gods footprints are truly everywhere. While brief by intentionto offer the reader a quick glance while on the clockit also provides a deeper reflection about the holy and wonderful God in our midst. From outer space to the human race, there is something for anyone wanting to ponder the reality of a God who loves us.

Book excerpt: “When they cried for help, God heard them.” Step into the ancient tale of Exodus, where the cries of the oppressed Israelites pierce the heavens, awakening God’s boundless compassion. In Exodus 2:23, we witness the eternal truth that God heard them when they cried for help. Nevertheless, this is not just a story from the past; it is a timeless echo, echoing through the ages, urging us to heed its call. It is a call to break free from the chains of our personal Egypt, to relinquish the attraction of fleeting solutions, and to embrace the divine plan woven into the fabric of our existence. Within these pages lies more than a narrative; it is an invitation— an invitation to spiritual fulfillment, freedom from oppression, and a life illuminated by the grace of God. It is a journey toward freedom, purpose, and a deeper understanding of our place in the promised land.

  • Author : Saint Ephraem (Syrus)
  • Publisher : CUA Press
  • Release : 2015
  • ISBN : 0813227356
  • Pages : 448 pages

Download or read book The Hymns on Faith written by Saint Ephraem (Syrus) and published by CUA Press. This book was released on 2015 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ephrem is known for a theology that relies heavily on symbol and for a keen awareness of Jewish exegetical traditions. Yet he is also our earliest source for the reception of Nicaea among Syriac-speaking Christians. It is in his eighty-seven Hymns on Faith - the longest extant piece of early Syriac literature - that he develops his arguments against subordinationist christologies most fully. These hymns, most likely delivered orally and compiled after the author's death, were composed in Nisibis and Edessa between the 350s ans 373. They reveal an author conversant with Christological debates further to the west, but responding in a uniquely Syriac idiom. As such, they form an essential source for reconstructing the development of pro-Nicene thought in the eastern Mediterranean.

Download or read book The Sound of Beauty written by Michael Kurek and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2019-10-01 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Music remains something of a mystery to many people—ephemeral sounds floating invisibly through the air—here, and then gone. This book begins with the basic question of what music actually is, scientifically, employing simple, clear explanations of wave theory and the acoustics of sound as part of God's natural creation. It presents accessible and fascinating explanations of some theories of the psychology of perception of music, how music speaks to the mind, emotions, and spirit. Some of these concepts have rarely been addressed outside the ivory tower and even more rarely been seen through the lens of Catholic theology. Moving from music and the individual to music in the culture and the Church, the author addresses numerous issues in the context of Catholic thought, including: immanence and transcendence in music the Real Presence and music Moral Theology, Natural Law and music ordered and disordered understandings of music as it relates to the emotions understanding the authentic meanings of "beauty" and "creativity" the real function of music in Catholic liturgy the role of music in evangelization This is a kind of "layman's handbook," a comprehensive theology of all things music, which anyone can understand, written by an internationally respected classical composer and music professor at a top secular university who is also a faithful Catholic. It sheds light on the mysteries of music and furthers the spiritual formation regarding music for Catholics of many ages and walks of life. It is groundbreaking in its comprehensive and holistic treatment of music from a Catholic perspective, and particularly timely in advocating for the renewal of the norms for music in liturgy found in the documents of Vatican II. It also presents one of the most penetrating critical examinations to be found of contemporary classical music, from an insider.

Download or read book All Made of Tunes written by James Peter Burkholder and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1995-01-01 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Charles Ives is famous for using borrowed material in his music. Almost two hundred individual works or movements, spanning his entire career and representing more than a third of his output, incorporate music by other composers or from his own previous work. In this book, the eminent Ives scholar J. Peter Burkholder identifies the different kinds of "quotations" in Ives's music, explores the complex musical, aesthetic, and psychological motivations behind the borrowings, and shows the purpose, techniques, and effects that characterize each one. Burkholder catalogues fourteen distinct ways that Ives borrowed, ranging from direct quotation to paraphrase, variation, collage, modeling, and stylistic allusion. Arguing that these borrowing procedures were compositional strategies, he provides a new perspective on Ives's process of composition. In addition, by tracing the development of Ives's borrowing practices through his career, he contributes to an understanding of the composer's stylistic evolution. And by showing how much of Ives's music uses borrowing procedures that are common to many composers, he reveals that Ives is not as far removed from the classic-romantic tradition as has been thought. Finally, Burkholder's comprehensive treatment of Ives's borrowing techniques offers a new perspective on the entire field of musical borrowing.
