Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With rare exceptions, serious intentional, reflective and sustained interfaith encounter is a novel and recent enterprise. This book looks in detail at one such encounter--the intentional recent Hindu-Christian dialog in India--and asks why and how the practice of dialog came to replace previous attitudes of confrontation and monologue (especially on the part of Christians). Part I sets the encounter in its global context. Part II offers a comprehensive and critical analysis of the actual encounter. Part III draws on aspects of the Christian tradition as it critically examines the ways in which the dialog has been justified in Christological categories. A final chapter discusses the future of the encounter. Unlike many other works in the area of interfaith studies, this work combines both descriptive detail of the actual encounter and critical theological analysis of the strengths and weakness of the dialog model.

Download or read book Pathways to Hindu Christian Dialogue written by Anantanand Rambachan and published by Fortress Press. This book was released on 2022-07-12 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hindus and Christians have a long history of interaction on the Indian subcontinent. Since the latter half of the twentieth century, with the increased possibilities for immigration, Hindus and Christians live side by side in many parts of the Western world and there are growing numbers of Hindu-Christian marriages and families. In North America, for example, the population of Hindus is approaching three million. Hindu students are attending many colleges with a Christian history and ideals. To avoid the dangers of these communities sharing geographical space but not understanding each other, Pathways to Hindu-Christian Dialogue offers dialogue that fosters mutual understanding, respect, and learning in both communities.

Book The Routledge Handbook of Hindu Christian Relations

Download or read book The Routledge Handbook of Hindu Christian Relations written by Chad M. Bauman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-12-30 with total page 957 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The historical interplay of Hinduism as an ancient Indian religion and Christianity as a religion associated (in India, at least) with foreign power and colonialism, continues to animate Hindu–Christian relations today. On the one hand, The Routledge Handbook of Hindu–Christian Relations describes a rich history of amicable, productive, even sometimes syncretic Hindu–Christian encounters. On the other, this handbook equally attends to historical and contemporary moments of tension, conflict, and violence between Hindus and Christians. Comprising thirty-nine chapters by a team of international contributors, this handbook is divided into seven parts: Theoretical and methodological considerations Historical interactions Contemporary exchanges Sites of bodily and material interactions Significant figures Comparative theologies Responses The handbook explores: how the study of Hindu–Christian relations has been and ought to be done, the history of Hindu–Christian relations through key interactions, ethnographic reflections on current dynamics of Hindu–Christian exchange, important key thinkers, and topics in comparative theology, ultimately providing a framework for further debates in the area. The Routledge Handbook of Hindu-Christian Relations is essential reading for students and researchers in Hindu–Christian studies, Hindu traditions, Asian religions, and studies in Christianity. This handbook will also be very useful for those in related fields, such as anthropology, political science, theology, and history.

Book Faith Meets Faith

Download or read book Faith Meets Faith written by Eric John Sharpe and published by . This book was released on 1977 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "How are Christians, with their claims of a definitive gospel, salvation once for all achieved by Jesus, to regard the beliefs of other religions? Many different answers have been given, particularly during this century, when greater mobility and social change have made the questions of local and practical, as well as theoretical and international interest. The problems and the issues involved are well illustrated in Christian attitudes to Hinduism, and it is these that Professor Sharpe discusses in his book. After looking at the older 'orthodox' views of the relationships between religions, he considers the argument, popular at the beginning of this century, that Christ fulfils all religions, the criticism of this thesis and the view that other religions, whatever their merits, are morally deficient. Then after studying Hindu views of Christianity, he follows development through the period between the wars and post-war developments in Protestantism and in relation to Vatican II to the positive attitudes which are to be found today among adherents of both religions." - Publisher

Book Hindu Christian Dialogue

Download or read book Hindu Christian Dialogue written by Mariasusai Dhavamony and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2021-11-15 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dialogue is an integral part of the mission of the Christian church. The immensity of the ocean of Hindu doctrine and thought presents a significant obstacle to Christians who have been invited by the Roman Catholic Church to “scrutinize the divine Mystery” present in other religions. Many, fascinated by Hindu mysticism, confuse permanent Hindu beliefs with certain current Western religious movements. India’s quest for the divine embodies multiple forms. Its millennia-old methods of meditation and varieties of asceticism often confuse those who are less inclined to experience of an inner spiritual nature. This book attempts to address some of these difficulties and questions. It is the author’s belief that in the Hindu-Christian encounter the Christian believer will also rediscover the originality and newness of the Christian revelation, viz. the intervention of God in the history of salvation whereby God reveals his salvific love in Jesus Christ. Possessing expert knowledge of both Hinduism and Christianity, the author approaches the Hindu-Christian dialogue with sympathy and discernment.

  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book Christ in India written by Bede Griffiths and published by Templegate Publishers. This book was released on 1967 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If modern civilization has lost sight of the goal that all ancient cultures held steadily before their eyes--a religious goal--how is man to recover the sense of the absolute and the unconditioned to which he can commit himself? The author believes the answer to this can come only through a meeting of East and West. A new structure must be found, and it must necessarily be universal, since we now irrevocably belong to one world. Only with a meeting of the old religions can a new adequate religious approach be found.

Download or read book South Asia s Christians written by Chandra Mallampalli and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: South Asia is home to more than a billion Hindus and half a billion Muslims. But the region is also home to substantial Christian communities, some dating almost to the earliest days of the faith. The stories of South Asia's Christians are vital for understanding the shifting contours of World Christianity, precisely because of their history of interaction with members of these other religious traditions. In this broad, accessible overview of South Asian Christianity, Chandra Mallampalli shows how the faith has been shaped by Christians' location between Hindus and Muslims. Mallampalli begins with a discussion of South India's ancient Thomas Christian tradition, which interacted with West Asia's Persian Christians and thrived for centuries alongside their Hindu and Muslim neighbours. He then underscores efforts of Roman Catholic and Protestant missionaries to understand South Asian societies for purposes of conversion. The publication of books and tracts about other religions, interreligious debates, and aggressive preaching were central to these endeavours, but rarely succeeded at yielding converts. Instead, they played an important role in producing a climate of religious competition, which ultimately marginalized Christians in Hindu-, Muslim-, and Buddhist-majority countries of post-colonial South Asia. Ironically, the greatest response to Christianity came from poor and oppressed Dalit (formerly untouchable) and tribal communities who were largely indifferent to missionary rhetoric. Their mass conversions, poetry, theology, and embrace of Pentecostalism are essential for understanding South Asian Christianity and its place within World Christianity today.
