Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1845, an estimated 2,500 emigrants left Independence and St. Joseph, Missouri, for the Willamette Valley in what was soon to become the Oregon Territory. It was general knowledge that the route of the Oregon Trail through the Blue Mountains and down the Columbia River to The Dalles was grueling and dangerous. About 1,200 men, women, and children in over two hundred wagons accepted fur trapper and guide Stephen Meek's offer to lead them on a shortcut across the trackless high desert of eastern Oregon. Those who followed Meek experienced a terrible ordeal when his memory of the terrain apparently failed. Lost for weeks with little or no water and a shortage of food, the Overlanders encountered deep dust, alkali lakes, and steep, rocky terrain. Many became ill and some died in the forty days it took to travel from the Snake River in present-day Idaho to the Deschutes River near Bend, Oregon. Stories persist that children in the group found gold nuggets in a small, dry creek bed along the way. From 2006 to 2011, Brooks Ragan and a team of specialists in history, geology, global positioning, metal detecting, and aerial photography spent weeks every spring and summer tracing the Meek Cutoff. They located wagon ruts, gravesites, and other physical evidence from the most difficult part of the trail, from Vale, Oregon, to the upper reaches of the Crooked River and to a location near Redmond where a section of the train reached the Deschutes. The Meek Cutoff moves readers back and forth in time, using surviving journals from members of the 1845 party, detailed day-to-day maps, aerial photographs, and descriptions of the modern-day exploration to document an extraordinary story of the Oregon Trail.

Book Jesus the Meek King

  • Author : Deirdre J. Good
  • Publisher : A&C Black
  • Release : 1999-06-01

Download or read book Jesus the Meek King written by Deirdre J. Good and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 1999-06-01 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most recent books about Jesus focus on history and biography. This book, however, focuses on culturally specific understandings of humility and meekness. Jesus the Meek King is a study of kingship in Matthew's Gospel that, unlike similar studies embedded within various commentaries on this Gospel, links meekness and kingship, placing both within the context of the Hellenistic world. In addition, it explores the specific virtue of "meekness" in Paul and in English literature from Tyndale to the present. Modern readers probably understand Jesus' use of the term "meek" to commend and exemplify submissive or humble behavior. "The meek" may even be seen unfavorably as those likely to submit tamely to oppression of injury. This provocative volume, however, proposes that Jesus as the meek king is better and more accurately understood as exercising the virtue of "disciplined calmness".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The “provocative” science fiction novel from an award-winning author about the future of humankind—and the future of non-human kind... (New York Times Book Review) The asteroid Ceres was a place where children born in space could grow in a more Earth-like atmosphere. Then a group of genetically-enhanced humans began a violent insurrection. All unaltered persons were evacuated, and the entire facility destroyed. Decades later, a corps of engineers and technicians arrives on the seemingly dead asteroid with the job of rebuilding on the site. But the unwitting crew soon realizes that Ceres is not devoid of life. Now, they are about to confront the results of humanity’s scientific tampering—and the consequences could lead to the end of them all. In this John W. Campbell Memorial Award finalist hailed as “absolutely classic,” Scott Mackay draws readers into a universe in which the ambitions of mankind have given birth to a new lifeform that shares one powerful instinct with its creators. Survival. “Mackay avoids the grandiosity that is an occupational hazard of science fiction writers who dabble in cosmic themes.... Provocative.”—The New York Times Book Review “A fast-paced action adventure.”—The Washington Post “Absolutely classic ... stunning ingenuity.”—The Globe and Mail (Toronto)

The friends have some innocent misadventures with a family of bears that help them understand how their wild cousins don't spend time mired in the past. By contrast, they learn that when human encounters went sour it was usually a product of lazy humans holding on to old beliefs and behaviors that had lost most of their original meaning. This book features Chase Baer, who demonstrates both strength and willingness to embrace change. Book Dreams of Leaving and Remaining

Download or read book Dreams of Leaving and Remaining written by James Meek and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2019-04-16 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The anatomy of Britain on the edge of Brexit, by Orwell Prize winning journalist Since Britain’s 2016 referendum on EU membership, the nation has been profoundly split: one side fantasizing that the referendum will never be acted upon, the other entrenched in questionable assumptions about reclaimed sovereignty and independence. Underlying the cleavage are primal myths, deeper histories, and political folk-legends. James Meek, “the George Orwell of our times,” goes in search of the stories and consequences arising out of a nation’s alienation from itself. In Dreams of Leaving and Remaining, Meek meets farmers and fishermen intent on exiting the EU despite the loss of protections they will incur. He reports on a Cadbury’s factory shut down and moved to Poland in the name of free market economics, exploring the impact on the local community left behind. He charts how the NHS is coping with the twin burdens of austerity and an aging population. Dreams of Leaving and Remaining is urgent reporting from one of Britain’s finest journalists. James Meek asks what we can recover from the debris of an old nation as we head towards new horizons, and what we must leave behind. There are no easy answers, and what he creates instead is a masterly portrait of an anxious, troubled nation.
