Book Sea Peoples of the Bronze Age Mediterranean c 1400 BC 1000 BC

Download or read book Sea Peoples of the Bronze Age Mediterranean c 1400 BC 1000 BC written by Raffaele D’Amato and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-20 with total page 150 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This title features the latest historical and archaeological research into the mysterious and powerful confederations of raiders who troubled the Eastern Mediterranean in the last half of the Bronze Age. Research into the origins of the so-called Shardana, Shekelesh, Danuna, Lukka, Peleset and other peoples is a detective 'work in progress'. However, it is known that they both provided the Egyptian pharaohs with mercenaries, and were listed among Egypt's enemies and invaders. They contributed to the collapse of several civilizations through their dreaded piracy and raids, and their waves of attacks were followed by major migrations that changed the face of this region, from modern Libya and Cyprus to the Aegean, mainland Greece, Lebanon and Anatolian Turkey. Drawing on carved inscriptions and papyrus documents – mainly from Egypt – dating from the 15th–11th centuries BC, as well as carved reliefs of the Medinet Habu, this title reconstructs the formidable appearance and even the tactics of the famous 'Sea Peoples'.

Book People of the Mediterranean

Download or read book People of the Mediterranean written by J. Davis and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-07-03 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Mediterranean countries have long attracted the attention of social anthropologists, from Frazer and Durkheim to the present day. In this volume, first published in 1977, Dr Davis reviews the extensive anthropological material collected and published by people who have worked in the area and claims that social anthropologists have a distinctive opportunity to compare similar kinds of institution and process in a variety of contexts – political, economic, bureaucratic, religious. He examines countries, tribes and communities stretching from Spain all the way round the Mediterranean and back along the coast of North Africa. In chapters on economics, stratification, politics, family and kinship, he has found it possible and sensible to set Albanian and Berber tribesmen beside each other, and to discuss Italian and Lebanese peasants in the same paragraph. The result is both a survey of the anthropological material and an essay in comparison, founded on a critique of the work of his predecessors and colleagues. The last chapter is an account of the uses anthropologists have made of the historical sources available to them.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mediterranean Race: A Study of the Origin of European Peoples When this little book was first published in an Italian edition in 1895, and in a German edition in 1897, I was still unable to obtain many anthropological data needed to complete the picture of the primitive inhabitants of Europe. In the English edition the book is less incomplete, richer in anthropological and ethnological documents, and hence more conclusive; it also contains replies to various objections which have been brought forward. This English edition, therefore, is not so much a translation of a work already published as a new book, both in form and arrangement The conclusions I have sought to maintain are the following: - (l.)The primitive populations of Europe, after Homo Neanderthalensis, originated in Africa; these constituted the entire population of Neolithic times. (2.) The basin of the Mediterranean was the chief centre of movement whence African migrations reached the centre and the north of Europe. (3.) From the great African stock were formed three varieties, in accordance with differing telluric and geographic conditions: one peculiarly African, About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Phoenicians and the Making of the Mediterranean

Download or read book Phoenicians and the Making of the Mediterranean written by Carolina López-Ruiz and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An important new book...offers a powerful call for historians of the ancient Mediterranean to consider their implicit biases in writing ancient history and it provides an example of how more inclusive histories may be written.” —Denise Demetriou, New England Classical Journal “With a light touch and a masterful command of the literature, López-Ruiz replaces old ideas with a subtle and more accurate account of the extensive cross-cultural exchange patterns and economy driven by the Phoenician trade networks that ‘re-wired’ the Mediterranean world. A must read.” —J. G. Manning, author of The Open Sea “[A] substantial and important contribution...to the ancient history of the Mediterranean. López-Ruiz’s work does justice to the Phoenicians’ role in shaping Mediterranean culture by providing rational and factual argumentation and by setting the record straight.” —Hélène Sader, Bryn Mawr Classical Review Imagine you are a traveler sailing to the major cities around the Mediterranean in 750 BC. You would notice a remarkable similarity in the dress, alphabet, consumer goods, and gods from Gibraltar to Tyre. This was not the Greek world—it was the Phoenician. Propelled by technological advancements of a kind unseen since the Neolithic revolution, Phoenicians knit together diverse Mediterranean societies, fostering a literate and sophisticated urban elite sharing common cultural, economic, and aesthetic modes. Following the trail of the Phoenicians from the Levant to the Atlantic coast of Iberia, Carolina López-Ruiz offers the first comprehensive study of the cultural exchange that transformed the Mediterranean in the eighth and seventh centuries BC. Greeks, Etruscans, Sardinians, Iberians, and others adopted a Levantine-inflected way of life, as they aspired to emulate Near Eastern civilizations. López-Ruiz explores these many inheritances, from sphinxes and hieratic statues to ivories, metalwork, volute capitals, inscriptions, and Ashtart iconography. Meticulously documented and boldly argued, Phoenicians and the Making of the Mediterranean revises the Hellenocentric model of the ancient world and restores from obscurity the true role of Near Eastern societies in the history of early civilizations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mediterranean Race: A Study of the Origin of European People The primitive civilisation of the Eurafricans is afro-mediterranean, becoming eventually Afro European. The Mycenaean civilisation had its origin in Asia, and was transformed by diffusion in the Medi terranean. The two classic civilisations, Greek and Latin, were not Aryan, but Mediterranean. The Aryans were savages when they invaded Europe: they de stroyed in part the Superior civilisation of the Neolithic populations, and could not have created the greco-latin civilisation.
