Book Health and Society in Britain Since 1939

Download or read book Health and Society in Britain Since 1939 written by Virginia Berridge and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1999-05-27 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: British health policy has undergone enormous change in the post-war era. The NHS established in the post-war period has been constantly reorganised, and the role of doctors and associated medical professions has radically changed. This book considers the changes in health policy and in the service provided by the NHS, and examines in detail the 'mixed economy' of health care and the role of different providers of health care, as well as their relationships both with recipients of care and the state. In doing so, Professor Berridge sheds light on the increasingly important part that lay people, especially women, have played in the provision of health care and looks at community care and the shifting balance of power within the medical profession. The book provides a guide to changes in health and health policy during and since World War II, giving an authoritative analysis of the most recent research.

Book Medical Memories and Experiences in Postwar East Germany

Download or read book Medical Memories and Experiences in Postwar East Germany written by Markus Wahl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-05-24 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws on the example of the major cities of Leipzig and Dresden to illustrate continuity and change in public health in the German Democratic Republic. Based on archival work, it will demonstrate how members of the medical profession successfully manipulated their pre-1945 past in order to continue practising, leading to persistence in the social conception of medicine and disease after Communism took hold. This was particularly evident in attitudes towards and treatment of sexually transmitted diseases and the pathology of deviant behaviour among young people.

Book Cultures of Psychiatry and Mental Health Care in Postwar Britain and The Netherlands

Download or read book Cultures of Psychiatry and Mental Health Care in Postwar Britain and The Netherlands written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2020-06-15 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Anti-psychiatry' is a movement more sloganized than analysed. Until now it has been associated in the English-speaking world primarily with R.D. Laing and a coterie of his associates, and a radical critique not just of psychiatric hospitalization but of the very premises of psychiatry itself and the basic institutions of society, especially the family. But are these notions accurate, or rather distorted images, created by Laing himself or by the media? In this book, which has emerged out of an Anglo-Dutch conference held in June 1997, the realities of critical psychiatry are explored, using comparisons and contrasts between the British and the Dutch experiences as a probe. There were, it turns out, various distinct anti-psychiatries - indeed, hardly anybody actually used that label about themselves - and they played a role in the reform no less than the rejection of regular psychiatry.
