Book excerpt: The Medbury Fort Murder, first published in 1929 for the Crime Club, is a ‘golden-age’ murder mystery involving the killing of an unpopular British Army officer stationed at an out-of-the way post in England. Loathsome Lt. Lepean is found with his throat cut and his head nearly severed from his body in a locked room at the isolated Medbury Fort situated on the Thames. Lepean was not at all admired among his fellow soldiers. The arrogant, sneering soldier was a known user of women and is revealed early on to be a ruthless blackmailer. There are at least four men who had very good reason to kill Lepean, two of them were being blackmailed. Was it one of them who slew the soldier or someone else?

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time in one place, Roger M. Sobin has compiled a list of nominees and award winners of virtually every mystery award ever presented. He has also included many of the “best of” lists by more than fifty of the most important contributors to the genre.; Mr. Sobin spent more than two decades gathering the data and lists in this volume, much of that time he used to recheck the accuracy of the material he had collected. Several of the “best of” lists appear here for the first time in book form. Several others have been unavailable for a number of years.; Of special note, are Anthony Boucher’s “Best Picks for the Year.” Boucher, one of the major mystery reviewers of all time, reviewed for The San Francisco Chronicle, Ellery Queen Mystery Magazine, and The New York Times. From these resources Mr. Sobin created “Boucher’s Best” and “Important Lists to Consider,” lists that provide insight into important writing in the field from 1942 through Boucher’s death in 1968.? This is a great resource for all mystery readers and collectors.; ; Winner of the 2008 Macavity Awards for Best Mystery Nonfiction.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 2018 ALA Book Club October Pick, Things that Go Bump: Paranormal Mysteries David Randall's perfect family life came derailed when his little daughter Lindsey died in a car crash. Thrown out by his second wife and wanting to leave a dead-end detective agency to start his own, he reluctantly accepts his psychic friend Camden's invitation to stay in Camden's boarding house in Parkland, North Carolina. Meanwhile, working the case of the murder of Albert Bennett, Randall's only clue is a notebook filled with odd musical notation. When another client, Melanie Gentry, hires him to prove her great-grandmother was murdered by her lover, composer John Burrows Ashford, over authorship of "Patchwork Melodies," Randall sets out to find a connection to Bennett's murder, as well as to the murder of a Smithsonian director, who was preparing a new PBS documentary on early American music. Randall's investigations lead him to another notebook, where he finds not only "Two Hearts Singing," Ashford's most famous song, but a valuable early copy of Stephen Foster's "Oh! Susanna," hidden in the cover. But things become more complicated when Ashford's spirit parks itself in Cam...and refuses to leave until Randall proves Ashford's innocence.

Book excerpt: In its first edition Dictionary of Literary Pseudonyms established itself as a comprehensive dictionary of pseudonyms used by literary writers in English from the 16th century to the present day. This new Second Edition increases coverage by 35%! There are two sequences: Part I - which now includes more than 17,000 entries- is an alphabetical list of pseudonyms followed by the writer's real name. Part II is an alphabetical list of writers cited in Part I-more than 10,000 writers included-providing brief biographical details followed by pseudonyms used by the wrter and titles published under those pseudonyms. Book The Detective Fiction Reviews of Charles Williams 1930 1935

Download or read book The Detective Fiction Reviews of Charles Williams 1930 1935 written by Charles Williams and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2003-02-14 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "'The new Sayers' is not merely admirable; it is adorable. There were, in Miss Sayers's more recent books, signs that a strange element was struggling to be free. In one this element seemed like philosophy; in one like fantasy. It has now become perfectly freed itself, and become perfectly united with her other capacities. The Nine Tailors is consequently not a tale of murder, but an experience of life."--Charles Williams, review of The Nine Tailors by Dorothy Sayers, January 17, 1934. English editor, literary critic, poet, novelist, theologian, and Inkling, Charles Williams (1885-1945) wrote popular-press reviews of detective fiction in its golden age of popularity (early thirties) for such newspapers as The Westminster Chronicle & News-Gazette and The Daily Mail. This book presents all of Williams' published reviews of detective fiction--covering works by Agatha Christie, Sax Rohmer, Ellery Queen, Dashiel Hammett and E. Phillips Oppenheim, to name a few. It begins with a discussion of Williams as a detective fiction reviewer, then presents the reviews year-by-year, from 1930 to 1935, and concludes with a discussion of the end of the golden age of detective fiction. An appendix lists the authors that Williams reviewed, which books were reviewed, the date that they were reviewed, and additional information on each author.
