Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanism of Life: In Relation to Modern Physical Theory IT is possible that the title of this book may be misleading to some readers, and so an explanation may, very appropriately, form the subject of this introduction. Well, then, by the mechanism of life is meant nothing more than the results of a scientific analysis of the activities of living animals. First, we must define what is meant by scientific method, and this is not at all di cult now that Einstein, Eddington, and the other relativists, have persuaded us to think about what we do when we investigate something scientifically. What we do, in that case, is to observe space-time coincidences in a four-dimensional manifold - that is really and actually our procedure, though it seems rather dreadful! It would be very inconvenient, also, to sustain oneself in this plane all the while, and so we proceed to let ourselves down to earth, so to speak. From the space coincidences that we observe (for instance, the coincidences of the top of a column of mercury in a barometer tube with certain marks on the adjoining scale) we infer space measurements, and from the coincidences of the hands of a clock with marks on the dial we infer time measurements. That simplifies the method a good deal. Then it is only the relations between series of space-time measurements that form the data of science (its differential equations), but that, again, is very trying, and so we assume that there are things in nature. These things are separated from each other, at the same instant of time, by intervals of space, while they are separated from each other, in the same space, by intervals of time. Thus we have something to lean up against and sustain ourselves in this rather di loult process of apprehending nature. The things that we regard as existing apart from each other in space and time are electrons. But just yet that is rather inconvenient, and so we regard our natural things as atoms and molecules in motion in an arbitrary three dimensional space and an arbitrary one-dimensional time. Book excerpt: Life is difficult to define because it differs from one living being to another; the life of a man is not that of a polyp or of a plant, and if we find it impossible to discover the line which separates life from the other phenomena of Nature, it is in fact because no such line of demarcation exists--the passage from animate to inanimate is gradual and insensible.

Book The Origin of Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Origin of Life Classic Reprint written by Ralph E. Blount and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-26 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Origin of Life In this lesson we shall aim to answer the question: How do new beings come into existence? People once thought that in fermenting or decaying substances certain minute living forms came into existence spontaneously; that is, that live things were produced just by the process of decay. But the micro scope has revealed to us the details of the life of the tiny beings that exist in decaying things, and we now know that these lowly forms, as well as the plants and animals of more complex structure, come from preceding living beings of the same kind. Life comes only from life. The living substance of every plant or animal resembles the raw White of egg. It is called protoplasm. It exists in tiny specks or sacks called cells. These cells, together with the few substances that lie between them, compose the bodies of all plants and animals. The word animal includes all species, from the microscopic forms which live in the water to the highest and most complex, man. The number of such cells in one person is almost beyond imagination. In one joint of the finger there are perhaps possibly twice that num ber. Yet all the cells of various kinds and unimaginable num ber, composing the body of any plant or animal, came into existence by a process of growth from the protoplasm of a single cell. The methods of that process are the first things we shall study. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Progress Buckle1 regarded it as clear that militarism and high intellectual development were not compatible: till recently, many people were prepared to believe that warfare was alien to the interest of civilised peoples and could only occur among half civilised or backward races. But this war has shown that these hopes were vain, and that the last result of civilisation was not to render war impossible, but to give the means of carrying it out on a vastly extended scale. The increase of knowledge and of power over nature, and the sense of the benefits of intercourse and inter-communication have not sufficed to give us any immunity from war. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Nature and Origin of Life: In the Light of New Knowledge "The notion that all the kinds of animals and plants may have come into existence by the growth and modification of primordial germs is as old as speculative thought; but the modern scientific form of the doctrine can be traced historically to the influence of several converging lines of philosophical speculation and of physical observation, none of which go farther back than the seventeenth century. These are: - "1.The enunciation by Descartes of the conception that the physical universe, whether living or not living, is a mechanism, and that, as such, it is explicable on physical principles..." Book The Evolution of Life Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Evolution of Life Classic Reprint written by H. Charlton Bastian and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Evolution of Life The publications of my work "The Beginnings of Life" in 1872 gave rise to a good deal of criticism, and was followed by much controversy for a few years. The criticism concerned both sections of the work - that dealing with Heterogenesis, as well as the portion in which I endeavoured to establish the reality of Archebiosis, though there was controversy only in regard to the latter subject. The absence of controversy about Heterogenesis was due to the fact that I made no reply whatever to any of the criticisms concerning this section of my book. It was a kind of subject which did not seem open to profitable discussion, especially with persons who declined to attempt to repeat the observations in question. I was at the time, however, more sanguine of good resulting from a discussion concerning Archebiosis. Much controversy therefore followed with some very formidable opponents, and as a result I continued to do further work in reference to this question up to the year 1877. During that and the previous year a very heated controversy was carried on with Professor Tyndall in this country and with M.Pasteur in France. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Physical Basis of Life It is not surprising that such pronouncements should have had a hostile reception fifty years ago. Even in this twentieth century some of our non - scientific friends somehow manage to find a source of heat and fury in so evident a fact as organic evolution. On the whole, how ever, sane and well-informed persons do not now seem to find either their morals or their happiness seriously affected by elementary and fundamental facts concerning living things. Today Huxley 's heresy of sixty years ago has become an orthodox platitude; but the problems of protoplasm still hold us fast with a gripping interest that has lost nothing of its force With the flight of time. In what light do Huxley 's conclusions appear after the bio logical progress of half a century? About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Cause of Life and Motion Although the writer has felt constrained to-use the term in its conventional sense, as a matter of fact, it will be found that he is more marefial in his Views than the most confirmed materialist, since he does not admit the possibility of the existence of any life or movement whatever with out a direct and systematic cause, Whereas, curious as it may seem, scientists as a rule, refer the cause of all life and movement to imaginary influences, either derived from existing anomalous properties or from dormant qualities infused in matter at some remote period of the past. In other words, they teach that a body of matter has various unexplainable, not to say inconsistent quali ties within it, which always act voluntarily and exact under certain conditions.' Book excerpt: Excerpt from The New Biology, or the True Science of Life It does not matter if this foliage reappears with certain changes of form and color. Truth may be all the more acceptable for its varying manifesta tions, and may thereby attract more attention from those who have become almost unconscious of its existence. If we give an old truth a new dress, we do so, only as a courteous plucking of the robes of the passer-by. We would not mislead, but would only awaken the mind to a consciousness of ever-pres ent truth, which from its very familiarity has ceased to make any impression. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Wonder of Life HE aim of this book is to illustrate the ever-growing wonder of animated Nature - with especial reference to animal life. It is an unconventional introduction to Natural History and Biology, taking broad views of the actual lives of living creatures and working inwards. It is therefore complementary to other books which begin with the minute analysis of the individual. The author hopes that it may be found useful in nature-study as a continuation of his Biology of the Seasons, and that teachers of Zoology may recommend it to their students as an introduction to the study of some of the problems for the discussion of which our crowded curricula leave little time.
