Book excerpt: "The Mechanism of Life" is a groundbreaking work by the French physiologist and biochemist Stéphane Leduc, originally published in 1911 under the title "La Biologie Synthétique." In this influential book, Leduc explores the idea of a mechanistic approach to understanding the fundamental processes of life, challenging traditional biological perspectives of his time. Leduc was a proponent of the concept that living organisms could be understood through principles of physics and chemistry, akin to a machine. He proposed that life processes could be explained through the physical and chemical interactions of living matter. Leduc's work was particularly notable for its attempt to synthesize life-like phenomena in the laboratory, using chemical substances to create structures resembling cells and even imitating some aspects of cellular functions. One of the key concepts in "The Mechanism of Life" is the idea of osmotic phenomena, wherein Leduc explored the role of osmosis in cellular processes. He conducted experiments involving the formation of artificial cells, referred to as "osmotic growths," by encapsulating various substances in semi-permeable membranes. Leduc's work was met with both acclaim and criticism. While some praised his innovative thinking and experimental techniques, others were skeptical of his mechanistic approach to understanding the complexity of living organisms. Over time, some of Leduc's ideas fell out of favor as the field of biology evolved, embracing more nuanced and holistic approaches to studying life. Despite its eventual historical context, "The Mechanism of Life" remains an important work in the history of biology, as it reflects an early attempt to bridge the gap between physics, chemistry, and the intricacies of living organisms. The book provides valuable insights into the scientific thinking of its time and the evolving understanding of life processes.

Book excerpt: Life is difficult to define because it differs from one living being to another; the life of a man is not that of a polyp or of a plant, and if we find it impossible to discover the line which separates life from the other phenomena of Nature, it is in fact because no such line of demarcation exists--the passage from animate to inanimate is gradual and insensible.

Book excerpt: When a Serbian-backed assassin gunned down Archduke Franz Ferdinand in late June 1914, the world seemed unmoved. Even Ferdinand's own uncle, Franz Josef I, was notably ambivalent about the death of the Hapsburg heir, saying simply, "It is God's will." Certainly, there was nothing to suggest that the episode would lead to conflict -- much less a world war of such massive and horrific proportions that it would fundamentally reshape the course of human events. As acclaimed historian Sean McMeekin reveals in July 1914, World War I might have been avoided entirely had it not been for a small group of statesmen who, in the month after the assassination, plotted to use Ferdinand's murder as the trigger for a long-awaited showdown in Europe. The primary culprits, moreover, have long escaped blame. While most accounts of the war's outbreak place the bulk of responsibility on German and Austro-Hungarian militarism, McMeekin draws on surprising new evidence from archives across Europe to show that the worst offenders were actually to be found in Russia and France, whose belligerence and duplicity ensured that war was inevitable. Whether they plotted for war or rode the whirlwind nearly blind, each of the men involved -- from Austrian Foreign Minister Leopold von Berchtold and German Chancellor Bethmann Hollweg to Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Sazonov and French president Raymond Poincaré- sought to capitalize on the fallout from Ferdinand's murder, unwittingly leading Europe toward the greatest cataclysm it had ever seen. A revolutionary account of the genesis of World War I, July 1914 tells the gripping story of Europe's countdown to war from the bloody opening act on June 28th to Britain's final plunge on August 4th, showing how a single month -- and a handful of men -- changed the course of the twentieth century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanism of Life Professor Leduc's Theorie Physico-chimique de la Vie et Generations Spontanees has excited a good deal of attention, and not a little opposition, on the Continent. As recently as 1907 the Academic des Sciences excluded from its Comptes Rendus the report of these experimental researches on diffusion and osmosis, because it touched too closely on the burning question of spontaneous generation. As the author points out, Lamarck's early evolutionary hypothesis was killed by opposition and neglect, and had to be reborn in England before it obtained universal acceptance as the Darwinian Theory. Not unnaturally, therefore, he turns for an appreciation of his work to the free air and wide horizon of the English-speaking countries. He has entitled his book "The Mechanism of Life," since however little we may know of the origin of life, we may yet hope to get a glimpse of the machinery, and perhaps even hear the whirr of the wheels in Nature's workshop. The subject is of entrancing interest to the biologist and the physician, quite apart from its bearing on the question of spontaneous generation. Whatever view may be entertained by the different schools of thought as to the nature and significance of life, all alike will welcome this new and important contribution to our knowledge of the mechanism by which Nature constructs the bewildering variety of her forms.
