Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first objective of statistical mechanics is to explain the fundamental laws of thermodynamics from first principles based on the atomic structure of matter. This problem was attacked successfully first by MAXWELL and CLAUSIUS in studies on the kinetic theory of gases. It will be treated briefly in Sec. II-A, to gain some understanding and experience before dealing with more general problems. The second objective is then to calculate thermodynamics quantities from the microscopic laws governing the atomic motion. Whenever we try to lay the foundation of thermodynamics on an atomistic theory, we are confronted with a very strange situation. The thermodynamical state of a system is defined uniquely by only a few quantities, such as pressure, volume, energy, temperature, flow velocities, etc. In contrast, the atomistic descrip tion needs an enormous number of variables to define a state, e. g. , positions and velocities of all the atoms involved in classical mechanics or Schrodinger's wave function of the corresponding N body-problem in quantum mechanics. Classical mechanics, for instance, can predict the future development only if all the positions and velocities are known, say at time t = O. The number of values needed for this 23 purpose is of the order of 10 . Actually, only a few parameters are at our disposal from thermodynamics. Therefore, from thermodynamics we know almost nothing about the atomistic situation.

Excerpt: ...thermal laws applicable to all bodies. To this extension and generalization chiefly, attention is invited in this chapter. But before entering upon that subject, it is well to familiarize ourselves with the various equivalent algebraic forms in which the theorem of Carnot is usually expressed. By the law of Joule, the work of an engine, receiving q from the source and giving q0 to the refrigerator, without waste, or the total dynamical value of the heat used, is E(q-q0) = 2fPdp. But by Carnot's theorem, 7 r/o = (T To); therefore 2 /Pdp = E(g-q) = Eq-(r-r0), which is the complete analytical expression of the two laws. As perfect engines have all the same duty, !_-JL = 1_l = L-zli; (119) q r q which gives always the constant ratio, L= =l = f =.., (120) 'o (o (Jo (o this result may be thus enunciated: between the same temperatures, the ratio of the quantity of heat given to the refrigerator to the total quantity received by any substance, or system, is constant for all bodies working in cycles of Carnot; and is equal to the ratio of the corresponding temperatures. Equation (119) may be written thus: At __ Aq __ q' = Aq" = r q q' q" And as ihis is true for all values, it is true when the variation is infinitesimal, or: = = = = etc. (121) r q q' q to which constant ratio (122) Clausius gives the rather obscure name of "equivalence-value" It is evident that these different forms simply express that, not only for perfect gases, but for all substances, absolute temperatures vary proportionally to the quantities of heat absorbed and given out in cycles of Carnot, or in perfect engines. From equation (119) wo obtain, for the heat necessarily lost in perfect engines, T a + t x By the law of Joule, Edq is the total...

Book The Mechanical Theory Heat

Download or read book The Mechanical Theory Heat written by R. Clausius and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-17 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mechanical Theory Heat The following translation was undertaken at the instance I, of Dr T.Archer Hirst, F.R.S., the translator of the first collected edition (mentioned in the Authors Preface below) of Professor Clausius papers on the Mechanical Theory of Heat. The former work has however been so completely rewritten by Professor Clausius, that Dr Hirst's translation has been found scarcely anywhere available; and I must therefore accept the full responsibility of the present publication. I trust it may be found to supply a want which I have reason to believe has been felt, namely, that of a systematic and connected treatise on Thermodynamics, for use in Universities and Colleges, and among advanced students generally. With the view of rendering it more complete for this purpose, I have added, with the consent of Professor Clausius, three short appendices on points which he had left unnoticed, but which still seemed of interest, at any rate to English readers.
