Book excerpt: Pig, poultry and fish farming are among the fastest growing agribusiness activities in East Africa, but high cost of major feed protein ingredients including fishmeal hampers profitability and growth of smallholder production. Interest in insects as an alternative nutrient source is growing. Black soldier fly (BSF) Hermetia illucens L. (Diptera: Stratiomyidae) is the most common insect species reared for animal feed. BSF larvae are able to exploit a wide variety of rearing substrates, including organic side streams, thus upgrading low-grade substrates into a high-quality protein source; BSF is not considered as a pest or vector of diseases and does not constitute a nuisance. These attributes make it an attractive insect species for mass production as sustainable and affordable feed ingredient. This thesis explores the potential of BSF as a novel feed ingredient in Kenya. The need to establish an insect-based feed sector has become important, but for insect-based feed to make a substantial contribution in substituting the conventional protein-rich fishmeal and soybean meal, large quantities of insect biomass are required, which makes insect mass rearing an inevitable step. Therefore, knowledge on sources of substrates for rearing BSF larvae, suitability of insect meal as feed ingredient, as well as acceptance and demand by end users is necessary for a sustainable insect-based feed sector. Promoting inclusive business for smallholder farmers through insect farming in an agribusiness value chain has been discussed. Farmers’ knowledge and willingness to pay for insect-based feed have been assessed. Larvae of BSF have been reared on agro-industrial by-products composed of brewers’ spent grains (BSGs), brewer’s yeast and cane molasses, their nutritional composition assessed, and have subsequently been fed to pigs. The results show that farmers are aware of insects as feed and are willing to use insect-based feed. BSGs are suitable for rearing larvae of BSF and supplementing BSGs with brewer’s yeast or molasses affects the crude protein or fat content of the larvae, respectively. Fishmeal has been replaced up to 100% with BSF larvae in feeds for growing and finishing pigs, demonstrating that these larvae are a suitable and affordable alternative to fishmeal with a beneficial return on investment, growth, carcass and nutritional quality of edible pork by-products. The study described in this thesis provides valuable insights into the suitability of combining different agro-industrial by-products for producing high-quality BSF larvae. These results are relevant to animal feed producers seeking to include insect meal in their feed formulae, to smallholder BSF farmers that either generate a circular production on-farm or sell BSF to feed millers. Finally this contributes to sustainable and economically viable livestock feeding systems.

While the demand for output increases, so has the need for alternative protein sources in feed to minimize the environmental impact of livestock production. Insect protein is a potential alternative to conventional sources of protein (e.g., soybean meal or cottonseed meal) for cattle consuming low-quality forage (LQF). The use of insects as livestock feed has been documented in the literature, and interest is growing; however, the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) has only approved the use of dried black soldier fly larvae (BSFL) for salmonid, poultry, swine, and adult dogs. The objective of this experiment was to evaluate the use of Black Soldier Fly Larvae meal (BSFLM) and BSFL frass and larval sheddings (FRS) as novel supplemental proteins for beef steers consuming low-quality forage. Eight ruminally fistulated steers (240.2 ± 22.5 kg of BW) were used in replicated 4 × 4 Latin squares. One of four treatments were provided to each steer per period: a control (CON) with no supplement, cottonseed meal (CSM), partially defatted BSFL meal (BSFLM), or BSFL frass and larval sheddings (FRS). Four 16-day periods were conducted with an 8-d adaptation to treatments, 7-d measurement of intake and digestion, and 1-d collection of ruminal fermentation and microbial samples. Dry matter (DM), organic matter (OM), neutral detergent fiber (NDF), and acid detergent fiber (ADF) were determined for forage, supplement, ort, and fecal samples. Considering that the increasing costs of traditional feeds constrain this development, research is looking into alternatives, which can ensure adequate nutrition for animals’ growth. This work reviews the use of alternative plant, microbial and insect protein sources, evaluating in particular their impact on growth, nutrient digestibility, fillet quality traits and sensorial perception in the most important farmed marine and freshwater fish species. The Brief specifically summarizes the pros and cons of plant oils from oilseeds, which can on the one hand be a sustainable substitute for fish oil, but which are on the other hand less rich in omega-3 long-chain polyunsaturated fatty acids. The feeding might therefore result in an undesired reduced nutritional value of the flesh of farmed fish. The authors also explore the possible use of fishery discards as potential aquaculture feed source. Since the landing of by-catch will with the new Common Fisheries Policy (CFP) become obligatory (instead of simply returning it to the sea, often dead), suitable uses of what must not be used for human consumption can be investigated. The authors give an outlook whether this might become a sensible alternative to improve the management of discards and create more sustainable fisheries. The Brief also addresses the issues of additives to aquafeeds, such as vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, but also immunostimulants and enzymes. The authors discuss which effects these additives may have on fish growth, welfare, reproduction and health status in aquacultures.

Traditionally, diseases and conditions of the GI tract that can cause losses have been controlled by antimicrobial compounds administered in the feed and (or) water, such as antibiotics, coccidiostats, zootechnical feed additives and trace elements such as zinc and copper. However, legislation and rulings in various parts of the world coupled with a growing sentiment to reduce the use of these compounds in the intensive livestock industries have caused a reassessment of measures to influence GI tract structure and function ('gut health'), and have caused unparalleled interest in alternative strategies (genetic, dietary, management, environmental) to effectively manage the GI tract under conditions of external and internal challenge. Despite the wide array of products and strategies available to the pig and poultry industries that influence 'gut health', a term in itself that is often misunderstood and misinterpreted, it is important that the industries continue to investigate and understand the underpinning sciences that influence GI tract structure and function, especially at critical life stages. Ultimately, the cost-benefit of adopting such practices to influence 'gut health' requires consideration.
