Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new study reveals how institutional practices and discourses shape the way men and women are conceived of, and how through this process, gender stereotypes and expectations are created. Informed by the latest research and trends, these expert authors examine the way in which domestic and global institutions shape and reflect gender interests and the extent to which feminists can challenge gender norms through political institutions. They examine regional, national and international institutions including the EU, ICC and UN and take a broad view of political institutions to include bureaucracy; federalism; legal structures; parliaments; voting and electoral institutions; and media coverage of women's involvement in such institutions. Drawing on experiences in the US, UK, Australia, Canada, and New Zealand this book will be of great interest to students and scholars of gender studies, political science and comparative politics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Eleanor Roosevelt never wanted her husband to run for president. When he won, she . . . went on a national tour to crusade on behalf of women. She wrote a regular newspaper column. She became a champion of women's rights and of civil rights. And she decided to write a book." -- Jill Lepore, from the Introduction "Women, whether subtly or vociferously, have always been a tremendous power in the destiny of the world," Eleanor Roosevelt wrote in It's Up to the Women, her book of advice to women of all ages on every aspect of life. Written at the height of the Great Depression, she called on women particularly to do their part -- cutting costs where needed, spending reasonably, and taking personal responsibility for keeping the economy going. Whether it's the recommendation that working women take time for themselves in order to fully enjoy time spent with their families, recipes for cheap but wholesome home-cooked meals, or America's obligation to women as they take a leading role in the new social order, many of the opinions expressed here are as fresh as if they were written today.

Book The Politics of Women s Interests

Download or read book The Politics of Women s Interests written by Barbara A. Barnett and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 129 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interest groups play a central role in a Democrcy. This study is an investigation of the nature and dynamics of women's interest groups and their impact on the legislative process in the 1980's. It evaluates the political activities of women's organizations as they relate to the public policy agenda promoting economic equity. the focus is on the role of women's political organizations as agents of change in employment policy, i.e., the Economic Equity Acts of the 1980's developed to implement the Equal Rights Amendment. These issues were selected because they were representative of major legislation which could change the lives of women in increased pay, job opportunities and job protection. This study utilized survey research and multiple case study methods. Data was gathered by surveying national women's organizations, conducting personal interviews, and multiple case studies by examining existing information through document study and consultation. the research question concerned the politics of women's interests, i.e., the factors that determine access with respect to the legislative process. What strategic choices do women's interest groups make when seeking political involvement and effectiveness? the method tested assumptions regarding the relative utility of political resources within the national legislative arena. the hypothesis suggests linkages between political resources and access to public policy development. Ninety-three organizations representing women have maintained offices in Washington D.C. and requested a listing in the index of the Washington Representatives 1992 directory. Questionnaires and interviews with a representative sample of the interest groups revealed: (1) Women's interest groups that are national in scope have increased in number, diversity, fragmentation and conflict, yet unite on issues in pursuit of political change. (2) Membership and coalition building are the political activities that determine access with respect to legislation. (3) From 1980 to 1990 the factors contributing to access to public policymaking benefiting women have translated into legislative incrementalism due to the influence of the special interest groups. Controlling factions may be the basis of democracy, but the pluralist model in which the diversity of interests prevents the domination of any one interest did not prevail in the 1980's. the proliferation of interest groups was assumed to open up the political process and the plethora of new issues, however, it did not curb the influence of the special interests. Patriarchy, ideology and a lack of resources in a quantity equal to the opposition acted as major barriers to equal opportunity for women.

Book Women Business and the Law

Download or read book Women Business and the Law written by The World Bank and published by A&C Black. This book was released on 2013-11-07 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women perform 66% of the world's work, produce 50% of the food, but earn 10% of the income and own 1% of the property. To shed light on why this grim statistic still holds true, Women, Business and the Law aims to examine legal differentiations on the basis of gender in 143 of the world's economies. Women, Business and the Law tracks governments' actions to expand economic opportunities for women across six key areas: accessing institutions, using property, getting a job, providing incentives to work, building credit and going to court. The report uncovers legal differentiations for women and married versus unmarried women such as being able to register a business, open a bank account and work at night. These issues are of fundamental importance. When, because of tradition, social taboos or simple prejudice, half of the world's population is prevented from making its contribution to the life of a nation, the economy will suffer. The empirical evidence does suggest that, slowly but surely, governments are making progress in expanding opportunities for women. It is our hope that data presented in Women, Business and the Law will both facilitate research on linkages between legal differentiation and outcomes for women, and promote better informed policy choices on what governments can do to expand opportunities for women.

Book The Underrepresentation of Women in Science International and Cross Disciplinary Evidence and Debate

Download or read book The Underrepresentation of Women in Science International and Cross Disciplinary Evidence and Debate written by Stephen J. Ceci and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2018-04-20 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There is no shortage of articles and books exploring women’s underrepresentation in science. Everyone is interested--academics, politicians, parents, high school girls (and boys), women in search of college majors, administrators working to accommodate women’s educational interests; the list goes on. But one thing often missing is an evidence-based examination of the problem, uninfluenced by personal opinions, accounts of “lived experiences,” anecdotes, and the always-encroaching inputs of popular culture. This is why this special issue of Frontiers in Psychology can make a difference. In it, a diverse group of authors and researchers with even more diverse viewpoints find themselves united by their empirical, objective approaches to understanding women’s underrepresentation in science today. The questions considered within this special issue span academic disciplines, methods, levels of analysis, and nature of analysis; what these article share is their scholarly, evidence-based approach to understanding a key issue of our time.
