Download or read book The Measurement of the Inductances of Resistance Coils Classic Reprint written by Frederick W. Grover and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-26 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Measurement of the Inductances of Resistance Coils Two standards of I - ohm resistance were prepared, both of manganin wire mm in diameter, the wire in one being arranged in a loop with the two legs I cm apart, while in the other it was bent into a circle of cm radius with a. Gap of cm between the ends. Each standard was provided with binding posts, in one case set perpendicular to the plane of the parallel wires, and in the other perpendicular to the plane of the circle. The self inductance of the binding posts was calculated and the mutual inductance with respect to the wire was assumed to be negligible. The inductances were calculated, giving the following values: Parallel wires. Circle. 279 437 8 End 22 Gap correction 4 Binding posts 4 Binding posts 291 cm 419 cm. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Absolute Measurement of Inductance It occurred to us that a modification of the method quoted above from Gray would be as well adapted to precision measurements as any other proposed. Instead of using the electrometer to measure the difference of potential at the terminals of the inductive coil and of a fixed resistance R, we vary the resistance R until the difference of potential at its terminals is equal to that at the terminals of the308a. Book Alternating Current Resistance and Inductance of Single Layer Coils Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alternating-Current Resistance and Inductance of Single-Layer Coils Several formulas for the alternating-current. Resistance and inductance of single-layer coils have been published. However, the results Obtained by applying these formulas to Specific coils are so widely different that it has been thought advisable to treat the subject in an entirely different manner. Most of the past writers on the subject started with the field equations and by making various assumptions were able to Obtain a solution of the problem. An integral equation method is used in this paper to develop formulas for the alternating-current resistance and inductance Of single-layer coils. Owing to the paucity Of experi mental data, several coils were constructed and the resistance and inductance Of them were measured at several frequencies. One of the first writers on this subject was Sommerfeld.1 His assumptions are that the field about the coil under consideration is the same as if the coil were infinitely long. Furthermore, he neglects the effect of the-spacing. This leads to results which are far from correct. In his original work he Obtained a formula for the resistance only. His method was used by Coffin2 to develop a formula for the inductance. In Sommerfeld's later work he takes into consideration the size and shape of the wire with which the coil is wound and also the spacing between the wires. Even this formula does not check experimental results Obtained by this bureau. Breit3 has applied an end correction to Sommerfeld's formula which gives much better values but which are still quite different from our measured values. Cohen' has developed a formula for high frequencies but it is based on the assumption that the field about the wire is the same as if the wire were square and the spacing zero. Book Resistance Coils for Alternating Current Work Classic Reprint

Download or read book Resistance Coils for Alternating Current Work Classic Reprint written by H. L. Curtis and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-24 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Resistance Coils for Alternating Current Work In an ideal resistance coil for alternating-current work two requirements need to be fulfilled, (1) the resistance must be independent of the frequency and (2) the phase angle must be zero. The design of coils which will fulfill these conditions as nearly as possible presents several interesting problems and the solution in any given case will depend upon the magnitude of the resistance of the coil. In order that some of the difficulties may be appreciated, a theoretical discussion of the factors which must be considered in the design of such a coil will be given. This will be followed by a description of the designs which have been found satisfactory, together with some suggestions as to proper methods of connecting the coils when they are to be used in a resistance box. Book A Study of the Inductance of Four Terminal Resistance Standards Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2016-10-13 with total page 54 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Study of the Inductance of Four-Terminal Resistance Standards When the shunts R - ls and RX are not of equal resistance the second balance may be obtained in either of two ways. First, by simply increasing R2, and, second, by changing the primary connections of the transformer from parallel to series. By making both these changes, shunts of very different resistance can be directly com pared. The assumption made in the second method, 'that the phase angle of a well-designed transformer is a function of the secondary circuit conditions only, has been repeatedly justified by measurements at the Bureau of Standards. As a further check, shunts E and H having and ohm, respectively, were compared by the two methods. The results given in Table 1 show an excellent agreement. Similar measurements at 700 cycles also agreed, showing that up to that frequency the electrostatic capacity between the windings. Does not affect the accuracy of the method. It is to be noted that by changing connections both shunts are kept at approximately their full current capacity and thus there is no loss of sensitivity if these capacities are different. Download or read book A Treatise on the Measurement of Electrical Resistance Classic Reprint written by William Arthur Price and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-24 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on the Measurement of Electrical Resistance The determination Of resistance is the cardinal operation in electrical measurement, in the same sense that the comparison of masses is the cardinal operation in quantitative chemistry, or that of linear and angular distances in geodesy and surveying; and for similar reasons. The electrical resistance of many stable bodies is known to be a highly characteristic and permanent quality, and indeed is probably so of all its measurement in terms of other resistances is performed with great ease: the exactness of the result does not depend on very accurate construction of the apparatus used and this apparatus may be easily made of great sensibility. The measurement of resistance is little inferior, in point of exactness, to that of mass, and superior to that of angular or linear distance. Book The Temperature Coefficient of Resistance of Copper Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Temperature Coefficient of Resistance of Copper Classic Reprint written by J. H. Dellinger and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Temperature Coefficient of Resistance of Copper For the resistance measurements the wires were placed in a specially designed oil bath with provisions for efficient stirring of the oil, for heating and cooling, and for temperature regulation. The wire was held between heavy clamps through which the cur rent was introduced. For conductivity determinations the resist ance was measured between knife edges mounted 1 meter apart on the marble base. The Thomson bridge method was used for measuring the resistances, employing a double set of variable ratio coils; an accuracy of 1 in 10 000 Was easily attained. The resist ance of the copper sample was compared with the resistance of a copper standard in the same bath as the test sample. The copper standards were Wires carrying soldered potential leads and placed in frames having connections for both current and potential leads. These connections dropped into mercury cups on the marble base in the oil bath. The resistances of the copper standards were compared from time to time with manganin resistance standards which were kept in a separate oil bath. The method of comparing the copper samples with a copper standard has the advantage that accurate temperature measurement is unnecessary.
