Book The Measurement of Adhesion at Film substrate Interfaces Using a Constant Depth Scratch Test

Download or read book The Measurement of Adhesion at Film substrate Interfaces Using a Constant Depth Scratch Test written by John C. Campbell and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By using a constant depth scratch test, the interfaces shear strength of various thin film/substrate interfaces can be determined. The ability to quantitatively ascertain when thin film debonding occurs has become especially important in the fields of electronics, optics, and protective coatings. A new model and experimental apparatus have been developed in order to more accurately determine thin film interfacial shear strength. While other tests are either qualitative in nature or experimentally difficult, the constant depth scratch test, which utilizes a Vickers microindenter for scratching a film/substrate system to debond the interface, produces quantitative results that are based upon a simple model. Since the depth is maintained constant during scratching, the complexity of the analytical formulation is reduced considerably, enabling the calculation of a numerical value for shear stress. Tests were conducted on chromium films on glass, gold thin films on aluminum nitride, and diamond films on aluminum nitride in order to determine and compare various interfacial shear strengths.

Book A Constant depth Scratch Test for the Measurement of Adhesion at Film substrate Interfaces

Download or read book A Constant depth Scratch Test for the Measurement of Adhesion at Film substrate Interfaces written by E. Daniel Secor and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This thesis reviews the development of the constant-depth Scratch Test for determining the adhesive shear strength of thin film-substrate interfaces, and proposes refinements to the theoretical analyses and experimental approach which were developed earlier. Modifications were made to incorporate a change in indenter orientation (for a Vicker's pyramidal indenter) as a measure to minimize damage during scratching. Additionally, the model was expanded to include the use of a conical indenter. A review of film failure modes was conducted, and the damage mechanism of forward lateral flaking was incorporated into the model. The data acquisition program was changed to reflect these modifications. Improvements were added to the previously constructed apparatus. Preliminary tests were conducted on chromium-on-glass samples, the results of which are also presented.

Book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences

Download or read book Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences written by Wade H. Shafer and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences was first conceived, published, and disseminated by the Center for Information and Numerical Data Analysis and Synthesis (CINDAS)* at Purdue University in 1957, starting its coverage of theses with the academic year 1955. Beginning with Volume 13, the printing and dis semination phases of the activity were transferred to University Microfilms/Xerox of Ann Arbor, Michigan, with the thought that such an arrangement would be more beneficial to the academic and general scientific and technical community. After five years of this jOint undertaking we had concluded that it was in the interest of all concerned if the printing and distribution of the volumes were handled by an international publishing house to assure improved service and broader dissemination. Hence, starting with Volume 18, Masters Theses in the Pure and Applied Sciences has been disseminated on a worldwide basis by Plenum Publishing Corporation of New York, and in the same year the coverage was broadened to include Canadian universities. All back issues can also be ordered from Plenum. We have reported in Volume 40 (thesis year 1995) a total of 10,746 thesis titles from 19 Canadian and 144 United States universities. We are sure that this broader base for these titles reported will greatly enhance the value of this impor tant annual reference work. While Volume 40 reports theses submitted in 1995, on occasion, certain uni versities do report theses submitted in previous years but not reported at the time.

Book Surface Engineering 2002 Synthesis Characterization and Applications Volume 750

Download or read book Surface Engineering 2002 Synthesis Characterization and Applications Volume 750 written by A. Kumar and published by . This book was released on 2003-06-02 with total page 648 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a forum for international and interdisciplinary discussion of phenomena where materials performance may be enhanced through engineered surfaces and interfaces. The materials science of hard and wear-resistant coatings, including nanostructured coatings, is a scientifically challenging problem with immediate technological applications in machine and machining tools, magnetic recording and other manufacturing industries. Hard coating systems designed for use in next-generation materials applications must achieve a combination of physical properties. The performance and reliability of MEMS devices strongly depend on the near-surface properties and many materials issues at the micro- and nanoscale remain to be resolved. This book reviews key aspects, discusses ongoing research and speculates on future trends. Topics include: nano- and micrometer-scale characterization and properties; synthesis and characterization of nanostructured materials; deposition, characterization and properties of films and coatings; industrial applications of surface engineering; atomistic and continuum modeling of materials properties; surface engineering issues for bio/microelectronics applications; and surface engineering issues in MEMS structures and devices.
