Book The Making of Neoclassical Economics Routledge Revivals

Download or read book The Making of Neoclassical Economics Routledge Revivals written by John F. Henry and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1990, this unique explanation of the rise of neoclassical economics views social change as an engine promoting change in theory. It attempts to develop a theory of the origins, consolidation and rise to dominance of the neoclassical school of thought. In so doing, it addresses the contest between the labour and utility theories of value; both are placed in historical context, and reasons are offered for the relative success of each in particular historical periods. It is argued that the eventual dominance of neoclassicism, a theory based on the social changes then taking place, resulted not from its scientific superiority but from its non-social perspective which ignores the social order upon which it depends.

Book Suicide of the West

Download or read book Suicide of the West written by James Burnham and published by Encounter Books. This book was released on 2014-11-25 with total page 251 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: James Burnham’s 1964 classic, Suicide of the West, remains a startling account on the nature of the modern era. It offers a profound, in depth analysis of what is happening in the world today by putting into focus the intangible, often vague doctrine of American liberalism. It parallels the loosely defined liberal ideology rampant in American government and institutions, with the flow, ebb, growth, climax and the eventual decline and death of both ancient and modern civilizations. Its author maintains that western suicidal tendencies lie not so much in the lack of resources or military power, but through an erosion of intellectual, moral, and spiritual factors abundant in modern western society and the mainstay of liberal psychology. Devastating in its relentless dissection of the liberal syndrome, this book will lead many liberals to painful self-examination, buttress the thinking conservative’s viewpoint, and incite others, no doubt, to infuriation. None can ignore it.

Book excerpt: The popular psychoanalyst examines the continuing tension in our lives between the possibilities that freedom offers and the various limitations imposed upon us by our particular fate or destiny. "May is an existential analyst who deservedly enjoys a reputation among both general and critical readers as an accessible and insightful social and psychological theorist. . . . Freedom's characteristics, fruits, and problems; destiny's reality; death; and therapy's place in the confrontation between freedom and destiny are examined. . . . Poets, social critics, artists, and other thinkers are invoked appropriately to support May's theory of freedom and destiny's interdependence."—Library Journal "Especially instructive, even stunning, is Dr. May's willingness to respect mystery. . . .There is, too, at work throughout the book a disciplined yet relaxed clinical mind, inclined to celebrate . . . what Flannery O'Connor called 'mystery and manners,' and to do so in a tactful, meditative manner."—Robert Coles, America

Book excerpt: NEW YORK TIMES, USA TODAY, and PUBLISHERS WEEKLY BESTSELLER “Full of valuable insights to guide you.”—WILL SMITH “Thoughtful and life-affirming . . . a must-read.”—TONY ROBBINS “This book will put you back in charge of your own life.”—TOM BRADY A new perspective on the overused and misunderstood concept of “karma” that offers the key to happiness and enlightenment, from the world-renowned spiritual master Sadhguru. What is karma? Most people understand karma as a balance sheet of good and bad deeds, virtues and sins. The mechanism that decrees that we cannot evade the consequences of our own actions. In reality, karma has nothing to do with reward and punishment. Karma simply means action: your action, your responsibility. It isn’t some external system of crime and punishment, but an internal cycle generated by you. Accumulation of karma is determined only by your intention and the way you respond to what is happening to you. Over time, it’s possible to become ensnared by your own unconscious patterns of behavior. In Karma, Sadhguru seeks to put you back in the driver’s seat, turning you from a terror-struck passenger to a confident driver navigating the course of your own destiny. By living consciously and fully inhabiting each moment, you can free yourself from the cycle. Karma is an exploration and a manual, restoring our understanding of karma to its original potential for freedom and empowerment instead of a source of entanglement. Through Sadhguru’s teachings, you will learn how to live intelligently and joyfully in a challenging world.

Book The Meaning Of Life

Download or read book The Meaning Of Life written by Jean-Michel Ferriere and published by Jean-Michel Ferriere. This book was released on 2023-08-31 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A golden age of understanding dawns upon the human race, yet little is it aware of what is to come, for long has it lived in the shadows of misunderstanding. And even though humanity has often been its own greatest adversary, it has nonetheless proudly prevailed, for the human spirit is a powerful representation of the universal spirit and will not be denied. The time has arrived, therefore, to lift the veil of illusion that stands between the human race and the supreme expression of itself, setting the stage for the greatest imaginable leap in human history – the leap towards immortality. However, before humanity can assume the high plane, it must first understand that it believes a lie about reality – and that is, that fear is reality. Consequently, it must come to understand how fear unconsciously causes the human race to use the belief system of Seeing Is Believing to create its reality, for this is the paradigm of understanding that has kept humanity enslaved to the victim/perpetrator paradigm. Therefore, as the stage is set for the human race to break the chains of self-servitude, it must now play its role in reestablishing its understanding of reality upon the principle that governs it – the principle of Awareness Is All There Is. This is the principle of principles and, thus, the truth of all truths; hence, it is the ultimate truth. As such, this principle is best equipped to explain the true intention and purpose of human existence and the meaning of life itself. As such, the time has now arrived for humanity to move into the age of immortal expression, for the divine spirit of universal love has thus given the command: 'Humanity, all rise.'

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Dictionary, n: A malevolent literary device for cramping the growth of a language and making it hard and inelastic. This dictionary, however, is a most useful work.” Bierce’s groundbreaking Devil’s Dictionary had a complex publication history. Started in the mid-1800s as an irregular column in Californian newspapers under various titles, he gradually refined the new-at-the-time idea of an irreverent set of glossary-like definitions. The final name, as we see it titled in this work, did not appear until an 1881 column published in the periodical The San Francisco Illustrated Wasp. There were no publications of the complete glossary in the 1800s. Not until 1906 did a portion of Bierce’s collection get published by Doubleday, under the name The Cynic’s Word Book—the publisher not wanting to use the word “Devil” in the title, to the great disappointment of the author. The 1906 word book only went from A to L, however, and the remainder was never released under the compromised title. In 1911 the Devil’s Dictionary as we know it was published in complete form as part of Bierce’s collected works (volume 7 of 12), including the remainder of the definitions from M to Z. It has been republished a number of times, including more recent efforts where older definitions from his columns that never made it into the original book were included. Due to the complex nature of copyright, some of those found definitions have unclear public domain status and were not included. This edition of the book includes, however, a set of definitions attributed to his one-and-only “Demon’s Dictionary” column, including Bierce’s classic definition of A: “the first letter in every properly constructed alphabet.” Bierce enjoyed “quoting” his pseudonyms in his work. Most of the poetry, dramatic scenes and stories in this book attributed to others were self-authored and do not exist outside of this work. This includes the prolific Father Gassalasca Jape, whom he thanks in the preface—“jape” of course having the definition: “a practical joke.” This book is a product of its time and must be approached as such. Many of the definitions hold up well today, but some might be considered less palatable by modern readers. Regardless, the book’s humorous style is a valuable snapshot of American culture from past centuries. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

(Psalm 8:3-8) King David wondered about the purpose of man just as we do today. Every one us was created for a purpose, but few understand what that great purpose is. "The Bible explains that those inducted into God’s immortal family must first sincerely repent of their sins, be baptized and receive the gift of God’s Spirit (Acts 2:38)." "Those who overcome will be given responsibility as kings and priests of God in that Kingdom (Revelation 1:5-6)."
