Download or read book American Economic Policy from the Revolution to the New Deal written by William Letwin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-07-12 with total page 495 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The documents in this volume reflect the great debates that have shaped this country's economic life. Covering a wide variety of problems, they show how each was treated at a moment when it was politically urgent. Since they were efforts at persuasion, usually addressed to a wide audience, they are coherent and self-contained and avoid technical jargon. They therefore present clear and vivid evidence of what men have desired and hoped to achieve, and explain not only much that is critical about how Americans lived in the past but much also about the inheritance of the present. From the overwhelming mass of available documents, a representative group has been chosen here. Among the twenty-nine included are: Hamilton's Report on Manufactures, which helped set the American attitude on economic growth; Andrew Jackson's veto message on the bill to renew the charter of the Bank of the United States; the first annual report of the Interstate Commerce Commission, which put the railroads under federal regulation; William Jennings Bryan's famous Cross of Gold speech, which helped him win the Democratic nomination in 1896; the conclusions of the Pujo Committee's report on the money market, which were instrumental in setting up the Federal Reserve System; and key documents on the National Recovery Administration, one of Franklin D. Roosevelt's major moves in his fight against the depression. In his introductory essay, the editor summarizes the forces and movements that helped to make American economic policy "exceedingly confused and therefore very annoying to historians and economists," But, he insists, this very confusion reduced "the extremism and disorder potentially so great in the United States . . . to remarkable moderation."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Well-written . . . analysis and insight into what role the crisp, clean Black Hills air may have had in the culmination of a successful political career” (The Washington Times). On August 2, 1927, President Calvin Coolidge shocked the nation by announcing he would not seek reelection. The declaration came from the Black Hills of South Dakota, where Coolidge was vacationing to escape the oppressive Washington summer and to win over politically rebellious farmers. He passed his time at rodeos, fishing, meeting Native American dignitaries and kick-starting the stagnant carving of Mount Rushmore. But scandal was never far away as Coolidge dismissed a Secret Service man in a fit of anger. Was it this internal conflict that led Coolidge to make his famous announcement or the magic of the Black Hills? Veteran South Dakota journalist Seth Tupper chronicles Coolidge’s Black Hills adventure and explores the lasting legacy of the presidential summer on the region. Includes photos “The book sets out to examine such questions as why the president chose to travel west and why he used the trip to make the announcement that he would not run for president again in 1928 . . . well documented and filled with fascinating details.” —The Washington Free Beacon

Book excerpt: Calvin Coolidge: A Documentary Biography reveals the "album version" of President Calvin Coolidge, featuring extended excerpts and, indeed, often the entire texts of major Coolidge addresses-as well as presenting a host of other illuminating documents, authored both by or about America's vastly underrated thirtieth president. Calvin Coolidge: A Documentary Biography shines a searchlight on Silent Cal Coolidge's world and worldview as no previous book ever has. It's all here: * The opposites-attract love story of taciturn Cal Coolidge and his outgoing wife Grace Goodhue Coolidge. * Jack Kennedy had his Irish Mafia, Jimmy Carter had his Georgia Mafia. The story of Frank Stearns, Dwight Morrow, and Calvin Coolidge's "Amherst Mafia." * Phenomenal vote getter Coolidge won more offices than any other president. The secret of how this painfully shy man did it. His strong appeal to Democrats. * The 1919 Boston Police Strike. How a city under siege ultimately makes Calvin Coolidge president. * How a runaway 1920 GOP convention stampedes to nominate Coolidge for the vice-presidency. * Unbelievable tragedy visits in July 1924 as Calvin Coolidge stands to become president in his own right--the death of his son Cal Jr. * The Coolidge presidency: a partnership of three remarkable figures: Coolidge, Treasury Secretary Andrew Mellon, and Budget Director Herbert Lord. * Coolidge vs. the Klan: reaching out to embattled minorities: Jews, blacks, Catholics. * The gutsy Coolidge vetoes.* How Coolidge chose "not to run" in 1928. Each entry also includes a revealing explanatory introduction by noted Coolidge scholar and award-winning author David Pietrusza. The book is further augmented by: * a Calvin Coolidge fact sheet. * a comprehensive Coolidge bibliography. * a detailed Coolidge time line. * a photo insert plus illustrations throughout the text. * an essay detailing recently discovered facts regarding the fabled Coolidge "Persistence" quote. In addition to numerous key speeches and texts from Coolidge himself, the volume includes contemporary readings from: * Bruce Barton * The Boston Herald * Marion Leroy Burton * First Lady Grace Goodhue Coolidge * Vice President Charles G. Dawes * Frederick H. Gillett * Al Jolson * Walter Lippmann * Judge Wallace McCamant * Treasury Secretary Andrew W. Mellon * Dwight W. Morrow * Alexandra Carlisle Pfeiffer * H. I. Phillips * The Pittsburgh Courier * Theodore Roosevelt * C. Bascom Slemp * Frank W. Stearns * R. M. Washburn PRAISE FOR DAVID PIETRUSZA'S "SILENT CAL'S ALMANACK" "Calvin Coolidge was one of the greatest presidents of the 20th century and is certainly the most underrated. This book, compiled by one of my favorite historians, will give readers a full appreciation of why Silent Cal's wisdom shines like a beacon through the fog of historical amnesia." -Jonah Goldberg, author of Liberal Fascism "an authority on the 1920s and [Calvin] Coolidge . . . David Pietrusza has brought Coolidge back to life with his volumes about the president . . ." -Amity Shlaes
