Book excerpt: Excerpt from The McCues of the Old Dominion: Supplemented With Brief Charts of the Steele, Arbuckle and Cunningham Families The first American Genealogy was printed in 1787, very few were issued in the next fifty years. It was not until the Centennial Celebration anniversary of our national independence(1876) that the revival in American history began, and the marvelous multiplication of the so-called "patriotic societies" and "orders" which has since followed, has given an impetus and value to the study of genealogy. Prior to that time only a small percent of people could trace their ancestry three generations and many who could were possessed of false ideas as to the numbers and standing of the original name. So frequently was this the case that those desiring to record the early history of any line, met with considerable difficulty in extracting authentic data from the colonists; the former avowing that the latter was seeking to secure their share in the supposed glistening fortune across the ocean. These traditionary ghosts are now seldom met with. The genealogist is better understood, though there remain checks on his progress, largely due to lack of interest, and an occasional spinster who flatly refuses to produce the family bible, in which the records are contained, because it would disclose her age, or a crusty "self-made" man curtly advises that he received no aid from his parents and therefore feels no interest in them. In compiling charts, items are often received that do not agree as to facts or dates, in such cases the writer has endeavored to harmonize the data and give it according to best judgment. But it will be seen that errors are unavoidable. Should the gentle reader be able to offer corrections or adenda, he will confer a great favor on the writer by advising him at once; and at a convenient day when sufficient information has been received, he will prepare a supplementary edition for the benefit of those interested.
