Book Limbic and Autonomic Nervous Systems Research

Download or read book Limbic and Autonomic Nervous Systems Research written by Leo DiCara and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present volume has been written primarily for the advanced student and the mature investigator. The book will be of value to the student because it includes representative research problems on a variety of topics, and significant for the mature investigator, because it can help bring him up to date on specific topics in limbic and autonomic nervous system research, an area which has undergone spectacular growth, particularly during the last ten years. The twelve chapters deal with subject matter that falls loosely into four major subtopics-basic sensory and regulatory mechanisms, emotional processes, cardiovascular processes and learning, and low arousal states-but each chapter represents recent research in one particular area, and stands as a self-contained unit. I am indebted to the many authors and publishers for their aid in granting permission to reproduce quotations, tables, and figures from their works. Specific acknowledgments are made in the text. Book excerpt: The power of odors to unlock human memory is celebrated in literature and anecdote, but poorly documented by science. Odors -- perhaps more than other stimuli -- are widely believed to evoke vivid and complex past experiences easily. Yet in contrast to the frequency with which odors are thought to evoke memories of the past, scientific evidence is thus far scant. For years, voluminous data have been collected on odor sensitivity, whereas relatively few studies exist on memory for odors per se. Moreover, the memory data that do exist are thus far only poorly integrated with the most modern attitudes on human memory. The major goal of this volume is to point the way toward a better state of affairs, one in which the study of odor memory is legitimatized as a proper specialization and is informed by the most promising ideas in the mainstream study of memory. This volume explores three tendencies in modern memory theory that have not yet sufficiently penetrated the odor-memory work: memory coding, memory and knowledge, and implicit and explicit memory.

Book Localization and Orientation in Biology and Engineering

Download or read book Localization and Orientation in Biology and Engineering written by D. Varju and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The German Society of Cybernetics organizes international conferences on selected interdisciplinary topics in regular 3-year intervals. The aim of these meetings is to bring together scientists who work in quite different disciplines, but are confronted with related problems and use the same or similar approaches. The topic of the 1983 conference which was held on March 23-25 at the University of Tiibingen came from a typical field of research in which engineers, biologists, and phYSicists share a common interest. We do not want to discuss here in detail the common principles which are used by nature and by engineers to solve the problems associated with localization and orientation, since the reader will find enough examples in this volume. The question, however, whether the participants of such meetings can really profit from each other, deserves some further consid eration. First, there is the difficulty of finding a common language. This still seems to be a problem, although in some fields the language of engineers and biologists has become very similar over the years, an impression we also gained during the conference. Most of the authors made a great ef fort to use a vocabulary which is understandable to people outside their own field of research, but, admittedly, not all succeeded.
