Book The Concord Quartet

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "We will walk on our own feet; we will work with our own hands; we will speak our own minds." --Ralph Waldo Emerson, "The American Scholar," 1837 From the start of transcendentalism and America's intellectual renaissance in the 1830s, to the Civil War and beyond, the story of four extraordinary friends whose lives shaped a nation "Beginning in the 1830s, coincidences that seem almost miraculous in retrospect brought together in Concord as friends and neighbors four men of very different temperaments and talents who shared the same conviction that the soul had 'inherent power to grasp the truth' and that the truth would make men free of old constraints on thought and behavior. In addition to Emerson, a philosopher, there was Amos Bronson Alcott, an educator; Henry David Thoreau, a naturalist and rebel; and Nathaniel Hawthorne, a novelist. This book is the story of that unique and influential friendship in action, of the lives the friends led, and their work that resulted in an enduring change in their nation's direction." --From the Prologue

Book The Light Shines On in the Darkness

Download or read book The Light Shines On in the Darkness written by Robert Spitzer and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 546 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why would an all-loving God allow suffering? Are not suffering and love opposed to one another? Does suffering have any meaning or benefit? Is there any objective evidence for God, for a soul that will survive bodily death, for the resurrection of Jesus? Who is God anyway – benevolent and loving, or angry and retributive? Fr. Robert Spitzer, S.J., gives a comprehensive response to these questions and many others, explaining the contemporary evidence for God, the soul, and the resurrection. He discusses how God uses suffering to lead us to compassion for others and eternal life. He also shows how the Holy Spirit guides us through times of suffering toward our salvation, explaining the signs and the interior movements that reveal the Spirit's actions. Fr. Spitzer not only addresses the perplexing questions associated with suffering but teaches us how to suffer well. He points out some of the most common mistakes people make when trying to interpret God's motives for allowing or alleviating suffering. He demonstrates why suffering – in combination with love – is one of the most powerful motivating agents for personal, cultural, and societal development.

Book Escape From Evil s Darkness

Download or read book Escape From Evil s Darkness written by Robert Spitzer and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2021-02-19 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this second volume of the Called Out of Darkness trilogy, Father Robert Spitzer, S.J., draws together some of the best advice given by Catholic spiritual masters across the ages and brings it into harmony with modern scientific research, offering practical ways to live out the gospel in our busy days. It is a roadmap to a deeper relationship with the Lord and to authentic transformation through the imitation of Christ. Giving evidence that Jesus established just one Church, with Peter as its head, Spitzer shows that the Catholic Church—with its rich array of sacraments, teachings, prayer traditions, and lived examples of holiness—continues to be fertile ground for profound Christian conversion. But no true conversion is purely spiritual; it must bear fruit in our daily lives. Father Spitzer guides readers through the workings of moral transformation, with detailed sketches of all the cardinal and theological virtues, especially love. Using insights from Saint Ignatius of Loyola, as well as from modern psychology, Escape from Evil's Darkness concludes with an in-depth study of the sacrament of confession and the staggering power of God's loving mercy.

Book The Soul s Upward Yearning

Download or read book The Soul s Upward Yearning written by Robert Spitzer, S.J., Ph.D. and published by Ignatius Press. This book was released on 2015-10-03 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Western culture has been moving away from its Christian roots for several centuries but the turn from Christianity accelerated in the 20th century. At the core of this decline is a loss of a sense of our own transcendence. Scientific materialism has so seriously impacted our belief in human transcendence that many people find it difficult to believe in God and the human soul. This anti-transcendent perspective has not only cast its spell on the natural sciences, psychology, philosophy, and literature, it has also negatively impacted popular culture through the writings of Richard Dawkins, Daniel Dennett, and many others. The warning signs of this loss of transcendence have been expressed by thinkers as diverse as Carl Jung (psychiatrist), Mircea Eliade (historian of religion), Gabriel Marcel (philosopher), C.S. Lewis and J.R.R. Tolkien. These warnings were validated by a 2004 study in the American Journal of Psychiatry which showed that the absence of religion alone was responsible for a marked increase in suicide rates, sense of meaningless, substance abuse, separation from family, and other psychiatric problems. Thus, the loss of transcendence is negatively affecting not only individuals’ sense of happiness, dignity, ideals, virtues, and destiny, but also the culture. Ironically, the evidence for transcendence is greater today than in any other period in history. The problem is – this evidence has not been compiled and propagated. Fr. Spitzer’s book provides a bright light in the midst of this cultural darkness by presenting both traditional and contemporary evidence for God and a transphysical soul from several major sources. He also shows how human consciousness and intelligence is completely special – and cannot be replicated by artificial intelligence or animal consciousness. We are transcendent beings with souls capable of surviving bodily death – self-reflective beings aware of perfect truth, love, goodness, and beauty. We are beings with an unrestricted capacity to know and create science, law, culture, art, music, literature, and so much more. The evidence reveals that we have the dignity of being created in the very image of God, and if we underestimate it, we will undervalue one another, underlive our lives, and underachieve our destiny. This work is the most comprehensive treatment of human transcendence available today.

Book Combinatorial Pattern Matching

Download or read book Combinatorial Pattern Matching written by Raffaele Giancarlo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2011-06-27 with total page 493 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book constitutes the refereed proceedings of the 22nd Annual Symposium on Combinatorial Pattern Matching, CPM 2011, held in Palermi, Italy, in June 2011. The 36 revised full papers presented together with 3 invited talks were carefully reviewed and selected from 70 submissions. The papers address issues of searching and matching strings and more complicated patterns such as trees, regular expressions, graphs, point sets, and arrays. The goal is to derive non-trivial combinatorial properties of such structures and to exploit these properties in order to either achieve superior performance for the corresponding computational problems or pinpoint conditions under which searches cannot be performed efficiently. The meeting also deals with problems in computational biology, data compression and data mining, coding, information retrieval, natural language processing and pattern recognition.

Book The Beethoven Quartet Companion

Download or read book The Beethoven Quartet Companion written by Robert Winter and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2023-09-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the Beethoven string quartets are to chamber music what the plays of Shakespeare are to drama, even seasoned concertgoers will welcome guidance with these personal and sometimes enigmatic works. This collection offers Beethoven lovers both detailed notes on the listening experience of each quartet and a stimulating range of more general perspectives: Who has the quartets' audience been? How were the quartets performed before the era of sound recordings? What is the relationship between "classical" and "romantic" in the quartets? How was their reception affected by social and economic history? What sorts of interpretive decisions are made by performers today? The Companion brings together a matchless group of Beethoven experts. Joseph Kerman is perhaps the world's most renowned Beethoven scholar. Robert Winter, an authority on sketches for the late quartets, has created interactive programs regarded as milestones in multimedia publishing. Maynard Solomon has written an acclaimed biography of Beethoven. Leon Botstein is the conductor of the American Symphony Orchestra as well as a distinguished social historian and college president. Robert Martin writes from his experience as cellist of the Sequoia Quartet. And the book is anchored by the program notes of Michael Steinberg, who has served as Artistic Advisor of the San Francisco Symphony and the Minnesota Orchestra.

Book Species Tree Inference

  • Author : Laura Kubatko
  • Publisher : Princeton University Press
  • Release : 2023-03-14
  • ISBN : 0691207607
  • Pages : 352 pages

Download or read book Species Tree Inference written by Laura Kubatko and published by Princeton University Press. This book was released on 2023-03-14 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Inferring evolutionary relationships among a collection of organisms -- that is, their relationship to each other on the tree of life -- remains a central focus of much of evolutionary biology as these relationships provide the background for key hypotheses. For example, support for different hypotheses about early animal evolution are contingent upon the phylogenetic relationships among the earliest animal lineages. Within the last 20 years, the field of phylogenetics has grown rapidly, both in the quantity of data available for inference and in the number of methods available for phylogenetic estimation. The authors' first book, "Estimating Species Trees: Practical and Theoretical Aspects", published in 2010, gave an overview of the state of phylogenetic practice for analyzing data at the time, but much has changed since then. The goal of this book is to serve as an updated reference on current methods within the field. The book is organized in three sections, the first of which provides an overview of the analytical and methodological developments of species tree inference. Section two focuses on empirical inference. Section three explores various applications of species trees in evolutionary biology. The combination of theoretical and empirical approaches is meant to provide readers with a level of knowledge of both the advances and limitations of species-tree inference that can help researchers in applying the methods, while also inspiring future advances among those researchers with an interest in methodological development"--
