The Hawaiian Archipelago, the most isolated major island group in the world, has long been known for the remarkable diversity of its ecological environments and for the high level of endemism in its fauna and flora. From approximately 280 successful flowering plant colonists, at least 956 species of flowering plants have evolved, about 89 percent of which are endemic. The Hawaiian flora is so distinctive that it is assigned to its own floristic region by most phytogeographers. Authors Wagner, Herbst, and Sohmer, and more than fifty collaborating specialists, provide keys to and descriptions of the 146 families, 649 genera, and 1,817 species of native and naturalized plants, arranged alphabetically within the dicots and monocots. Each species is provided with its accepted scientific name, Hawaiian and English common names, nomenclatural and taxonomic synonyms, chromosome numbers if available, and geographical and ecological ranges, as well as notes on taxonomic problems and citation of relevant literature. Ethnobotanical information is also given for many species. Two hundred forty full-page plates illustrate more than half of the species and nearly all genera. Book excerpt: This study examines the role of coercion in the unification of the Hawaiian Islands by Kamehameha I between 1782 and 1812 at a time of increasing European contact. Three interrelated themes in Hawaiian political evolution are examined: the balance between coercion and consent; the balance between general structural trends and specific individual styles of leadership and historical events; and the balance between indigenous and European factors. The resulting synthesis is a radical reinterpretation of Hawaiian warfare that treats it as an evolving process heavily imbued with cultural meaning. Hawaiian history is also shown to be characterised by fluid changing circumstances, including crucial turning points when options were adopted that took elements of Hawaiian society on paths of development that proved decisive for political unification. These watershed moments were neither inevitable nor predictable. Perhaps the greatest omission in the standard discourse on the political evolution of Hawaiian society is the almost total exclusion of modern indigenous Hawaiian scholarship on this topic. Modern historians from the Hawai‘inuiākea School of Hawaiian Knowledge at the University of Hawai‘i at Mānoa argue that political leadership and socioeconomic organisation were much more concensus-based than is usually allowed for. Above all, this study finds modern indigenous Hawaiian studies a much better fit with the historical evidence than more conventional scholarship.

In the past two decades much has been achieved in the sphere of breeding endangered species, and we should be pleased that our co operative efforts have already borne so much fruit. However, on balance and despite the best efforts of conservationists, the position of wildlife in the wild places where they are best conserved has become worse, often dramatically worse. Before returning to the United Kingdom in 1972, I was in Uganda for 16 years, most of which time was spent as Chief Warden of Murchison Falls National Park. Our main problem was that an over-population of large mammals was having a devastating impact on the habitat. Devas tation was being wrought on woodland areas by the arrival of large numbers of elephants into the sanctuary of the Park, following changes in land use in the areas outside the Park. These changes were in response to the requirements of an ever-expanding human population.
