Book The Matthew Journey A Discipleship Manual Through the Gospel of Matthew

Download or read book The Matthew Journey A Discipleship Manual Through the Gospel of Matthew written by Jeff S. Kennedy and published by Essentialife Resources. This book was released on 2011-12 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before Jesus left his disciples he gave them the famous commission to "Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit, and teaching them to obey everything that I've commanded you..." (Mt 28:19-20). The commission actually reveals a unique characteristic of Matthew's Gospel - it was designed to be a training manual for the Matthean community of disciples. Matthew's Gospel was structured along five major discourses on discipleship (Ch's 5-7; 10; 13; 18; 24-25). In addition to these formalized sermons, the gospel contains numerous situational teaching moments. Thus, future disciples are expected to assimilate the entire spectrum of Jesus' teaching content found in both His preaching and practice. The disciple of Jesus should know: - who Jesus is - what Jesus has to say, and - what Jesus did. Knowing who he is will inspire faith in him. Knowing what he commands will guide the disciple in obedience, and knowing what the Master does will provide a pattern to follow. These three lines of inquiry will guide the disciple's development into the image of Jesus. The end-game in following such a manual is that the believer will be prepared to make disciples of others. If this all sounds to you like a pretty tall order, well then you're right. It is a demanding journey! Welcome to The Matthew Journey. This study guide follow's the course taught at Eastpoint Church in Spokane Valley, WA. It is designed to be a thirteen week discipleship/mentoring curriculum for committed disciples.

Book Gospel Discipleship Participant Guide

Download or read book Gospel Discipleship Participant Guide written by Michelle J. Morris and published by Abingdon Press. This book was released on 2020-03-31 with total page 131 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There was a time when discipleship was taken for granted. It was assumed that people could be persuaded to believe and that each person would step into the path that took them to Jesus. That assumption is no longer valid. As early as the Gospels, Jesus and his biographers recognize that each person brings experience to the journey, which travels through different times and places. The discipleship path for each individual disciple is assessed and determined through this Gospel Discipleship Participant Guide while the Gospel Discipleship Congregation Guide serves as the implementation guide for church leaders. It also assesses the discipleship path for the congregation as a whole. By understanding what type of disciple you are, participants in Gospel Discipleship can clarify the path they need to walk. Some people love to go on mission trips; some people really thrive learning from a great teacher; some people connect to God through painting and music; and some people just want to have a cup of coffee and talk about life and eventually get around to talking about Jesus. Participants in Gospel Discipleship can be set free from the guilt of not feeling like a "real" disciple because they don't feel called to experience the journey the same way as everyone else. Instead, participants can become the disciple Jesus wants them to be. They can spend their valuable time and energy living and walking on the path where Jesus is calling them to follow.

Book The Meaning of Make Disciples in the Broader Context of the Gospel of Matthew

Download or read book The Meaning of Make Disciples in the Broader Context of the Gospel of Matthew written by Lindsay D. Arthur and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2022-05-09 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Students of the Bible are generally comfortable with their understanding of the command “make disciples” (Matt 28:19). Indeed, most of them would argue that the Gospel writer, Matthew, spells out very clearly the meaning of the term in the Great Commission (Matt 28:16–20) by utilizing three key words, viz., “go[ing],” “baptizing,” and “teaching.” This point of view is the result of centuries of scholarly opinion that has looked primarily, if not solely, to these three adjacent participles of “make disciples” (Matt 28:19), and not to the entire Gospel of Matthew, for the meaning of the command. This book does not suggest that “going,” “baptizing,” and “teaching” are not to be considered in determining the essence of Christian disciple-making. Rather, it contends that the three terms should not be our only source of meaning. This problem is tackled herein by demonstrating that Matthew establishes a framework within the Great Commission itself that points to a fuller meaning of “make disciples” in the broader context of his Gospel, and that the Gospel writer expects his reader to draw on his entire Gospel to grasp the full meaning of this important command.
