Book The Matterhorn Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Matterhorn Classic Reprint written by Guido Rey and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-07 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Matterhorn Of conquest, now by one, now by another route, which in turn were abandoned and resumed; it tells of the long succession of the earliest unsuccessful attempts, Of hopes dashed to the ground and rising again, of patient preparations, of mortal anxiety, of the rivalry and the struggles of the different expedi tions, foiled by every kind of natural and fortuitous mishap; it tells the story of the two attempts, at last successful, made almost simultaneously from the Italian side and from the Swiss, in which the pride of a daring Englishman and the patriotic feeling of a great Italian met here and there in conflict, and the former's triumph was tragic, and the revenge of the vanquished was no less glorious than the first conquest. But all this, sufficient matter indeed for a book, forms but a part Of Rey's work. It is preceded by a most telling picture of the people who live under the great mountain's sway, as they were before their Matterhorn became the fortune and the glory Of the valley, poor and austere, almost shut Off from the world, simple and rude in their habits, believing in wondrous legends of giants and fairies; to whom the mighty pyramid towering over their hills was as a mysterious and terrible monster, to be for ever a mystery; and from among these people there stand out weird figures, now lost to us these fifty years and more, whose very mould had disappeared: innkeepers, shepherds, hunters, solitary and simple Old priests, who in our imaginations are almost confounded with the personages Of the fables told and believed in by their people while they lived. In the relation of the long struggle for the conquest Of the peak, the author shows us, with new details and the happy touch of an artist, all the pioneers, actors, and their helpers, present and afar Off, illustrious and Obscure, in the memorable enterprise among them there pass before us guides, scientists, artists, priests, Tyndall and Whymper, the abbé Gorret and the geologist Giordano, the hunchback of Breuil and Quintino Sella - a group Of figures that are indelibly impressed on our memories in a hundred different ways, in strenuous thought, in violent effort. Book The Spirit of the Matterhorn Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Spirit of the Matterhorn Classic Reprint written by John Sholto Douglas Queensberry and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-16 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Spirit of the Matterhorn Let us for a moment revert to this orthodox theory as illustrated by a man inhabiting a house. Is the Soul as independent of its domicile, the body, as the simile shows the man to be of his house? On the contrary, do we not plainly see that it is dependent on it in every possible way? Demolish the body, shall we say? Well, since no Soul has ever come back to tell us that it has gone on its way rejoicing, we can base no argument upon that. But damage the body. What is the result if a man receives a violent blow on the head? The consequence is a temporary annihilation of his individuality; loss of consciousness is the inevitable result, in which what is called the Soul stops like a clock. N ow, if this Soul be a separate and distinct vitality from the body, where in this event has it betaken itself? Why should it be thus affected by the damage done to the body of which it is said notto be a part? If the blow is a severe one, the man may become an idiot. But what, I ask, becomes an idiot if it be not his consciousness, his Soul - that which you term his individuality? In a letter formally addressed to me in the course of a public discussion, which arose through my having openly expressed my opinions on these matters in Buenos Ayres, South America, my opponent, who styled himself Ichthus. Book To and Fro Classic Reprint

Download or read book To and Fro Classic Reprint written by Henry Mather Warren and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-04-26 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from To and Fro Finally the pigmy triumphed. He put its topmost stone beneath his creeping feet, and others followed; but the cruel crag has taken toll of more than twenty lives for their temerity. Riding up the valley of the Visp, as one rounds the angle of an interposing. Hill, directly in front of him towers the solitary monolith, a massive monument that tells of the immensity of this Alp range in Mesozoic time. The average traveler comes to Zermatt with about as much intention of attempting the moon as the Matterhorn. He has read how for centuries its precipitous sides defied every effort of man to gain the summit, of the lives that have been dashed out upon its icy rocks, and until he comes under its mighty spell, he feels no inclination to risk either his neck or his reputation for common sense in an undertaking so laborious and full of peril. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alps For the early chapters of this book I have consulted, amongst other authorities, the books mentioned in the bibliography on pp. 251- 254. It would, however, be ungracious if I failed to acknowledge my indebtedness to that most readable of historians, Mr. Gribble, and to his books, The Early Mountaineers (Fisher Unwin) and The Story of Alpine Climbing (Nelson). Mr. Gribble and his publisher, Mr. Unwin, have kindly allowed me to quote passages translated from the works of the pioneers. Two friends, experts in the practice and history of mountaineering, have read the proofs and helped me with numerous suggestions. Book Mountaineering Records Classic Reprint

Download or read book Mountaineering Records Classic Reprint written by Emily Hornby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02 with total page 366 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mountaineering Records When I first planned publishing some record of my sister's principal mountaineering tours, I thought I should have merely to select and copy from closely kept journals. I was very much disappointed to find that she had not begun to keep a journal during the ten years when she accomplished most. The record in small pocket-books is so closely written (often with bad ink) as to be very difficult to read, -an'd also so abridged that it hardly could be of general interest. The Matterhorn, the Dent Blanche, the Eiger, the Grand Paradis, etc., all belong to this period. Monte Cristallo was accomplished in 1888, but the journal of that year has been lost or mislaid. I have, however, the account of that ascent and some others in letters to a cousin, who has allowed me to take extracts and I thought it best to begin with these extracts, and some short accounts which my sister wrote herself for a friend. After this come some short extracts from a tour in 1883, when my sister began keeping a journal, but apparently she did not keep one every year. The tour of 1890 appeared to me very interesting, and I have 00pied the greater part of it. At the end is a list of the peaks and passes she had gone up and over, which my sister made herself. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wayfarers in Italy We took advantage of the early morning, which was crystal clear, to climb the four hundred and ninety four steps that lead to the roof, and there to look down upon all the kingdoms of the earth spread out before us, or so it seemed. Towering against the heavens rose the noblest peaks of the Alps, Mont Blanc, Monte Rosa, the Matterhorn, with all their lesser brethren. Eternal. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Alps of King-Kern Divide Quin rivers, are Alps indeed, not lower than the grandest of those in Europe, and scarcely inferior in magnificence. The number of peaks in this region which pass the limit of feet is not less than in all Switzerland. The highest of these peaks, Mount Whitney, is given by U. S. Geological Survey as feet in height. It is thus a little lower than the Matterhorn while Mt. Blanc Monte Rosa the Mischabel horn and the Weisshorn outrank it a little more. But virtually all reach much the same level, and between these peaks, and the next. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Scrambles Amongst the Alps in the Years 1860 69 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Scrambles Amongst the Alps in the Years 1860 69 Classic Reprint written by Edward Whymper and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-07-15 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Scrambles Amongst the Alps in the Years 1860-'69 The preparation of the illustrations has occupied a large part of my time during the last six years. With the exception of the views upon pp. 18, 19 and 24, the whole of the illustrations have been engraved expressly for the book, and, unless it is otherwise specified, all are from my own sketches. About fifty have been drawn on the wood by Mr. James Mahoney, and I am much indebted to that artist for the care and fidelity with which he has fol lowed my slight memoranda, and for the spirit that he has put into his admirable designs. Most of his drawings will be identified by his mono gram. Twenty of the remainder are the work of Mr. Cyrus Johnston, and out of these I would draw especial attention to the view of the Matterhorn facing p. 36, the striated rock upon p. 63, and the bits from the Mer de Glace upon pp. 138, 139. The illustrations have been introduced as illustra tions, and very rarely for ornamental purposes. We have subordinated everything in them to accuracy, and it is only fair to the artists who have honored me by their assistance to say that many of their designs would have ranked higher as works of art if they had been subjected to fewer restrictions. Book excerpt: Intense, powerful, and compelling, Matterhorn is an epic war novel in the tradition of Norman Mailer’s The Naked and the Dead and James Jones’s The Thin Red Line. It is the timeless story of a young Marine lieutenant, Waino Mellas, and his comrades in Bravo Company, who are dropped into the mountain jungle of Vietnam as boys and forced to fight their way into manhood. Standing in their way are not merely the North Vietnamese but also monsoon rain and mud, leeches and tigers, disease and malnutrition. Almost as daunting, it turns out, are the obstacles they discover between each other: racial tension, competing ambitions, and duplicitous superior officers. But when the company finds itself surrounded and outnumbered by a massive enemy regiment, the Marines are thrust into the raw and all-consuming terror of combat. The experience will change them forever. Written by a highly decorated Marine veteran over the course of thirty years, Matterhorn is a spellbinding and unforgettable novel that brings to life an entire world—both its horrors and its thrills—and seems destined to become a classic of combat literature.

Download or read book A Bibliography of the White Mountains Classic Reprint written by Allen H. Bent and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-05 with total page 144 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Bibliography of the White Mountains The earliest of American landscape painters, Thomas Cole and Thomas Doughty, were not slow in finding out the beauties of the White Mountains, and they have had many followers. A cata logue of paintings in public places might prove interesting, al though it would be painfully short. The Boston Museum of Fine Arts has none; the Corcoran Gallery in Washington has but one, John F. Kensett's Sketch of Mt. Washington; and the great Metropolitan Museum in New York has only one, Homer D. Martin's Madison and Adams from Randolph Hill. The Lenox Library in New York does better, with five. One field, newspaper articles, I have neglected entirely, although it contains much valuable matter. In the New Hampshire States man and Concord Register of September 9 and 16, 1826, is per haps the earliest printed description of Franconia Notch and an ascent of Mt. Lafayette, or Mt. Fayette as the writer calls it. A few days earlier nearly all of the New England newspapers pre sented thrilling accounts of the terrible Willey house disaster. Starr King's first mountain articles, signed T, appeared in the Boston Transcript in the summer of 1853, and the several chap ters of Julius H. Ward's volume were written originally for the Boston Sunday Herald. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from My Home in the Alps In this little volume, much of the matter in which first appeared in the St. Moritz Post, or, as it is now called, the Alpine Post, I have jotted down a few things of interest to the ordinary traveller in Switzerland. To climbers, my notes will be but a thrice-told tale, and one which, doubtless, many of them could tell far better, while not a few of them have already told it elsewhere. The idea of publishing these trifling papers came to me through the necessity of replying to many questions on the subjects to which I refer; for, living as I do in Switzerland, I naturally am supposed to be more familiar with the peculiarities of the country and people than is the ordinary tourist.
