Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur C. Clarke was renowned for his science fiction, but his understanding of the subject was more than imagined. First published in 1951, this painstakingly-researched non-fiction book shows the depth of Clarke's expertise - he predicts the moon landings nearly two decades before they occurred, explores the potential use of satellites for communications more than ten years before Telstar 1 was put into orbit, and goes on to discuss the potential of space stations and long range orbital telescopes. Informed by interviews with the foremost scientists and engineers of the time, Clarke presents his thesis for how man will explore space . . . and the reader can measure his predictions against reality. 'He was a great visionary, a brilliant science fiction writer and a great forecaster. He foresaw communications satellites, a nationwide network of computers, interplanetary travel; he said there would be a man on the moon by 1970, while I said 1980' - and he was right' Sir Patrick Moore

Book What s Up There

  • Author : NASA
  • Publisher :
  • Release : 2004-09-01
  • ISBN : 9781410216298
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book What s Up There written by NASA and published by . This book was released on 2004-09-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book has been written to help your students understand space and the problems of its exploration by utilizing the scientific and mathematical skills which they already possess or are in the process of mastering. In our space-oriented era, people from all walks of life need to work together to realize the advantages offered by technological advancement. It is important that students recognize such interdependence. The challenging problems of space exploration are so complex that success comes only as a result of the combined efforts of many people working as a team toward some common goal. Inherent in all of this material is the emphasis on the team approach to the solution of problems. It is basic and fundamental to the full functioning of every student in any American school today. For the student who is less advanced, there are simple experiments, simple problems. For the more advanced, there are limitless possibilities to challenge creative and intellectual competencies. By sharing and working together, students learn from each other, stimulate each other, and share the fruits of their discovery. The material is not presented developmentally. It is suggested that the contents be used selectively as they apply to the situations which develop in your classroom, rather than sequentially. The book will probably be used more by students in the intermediate grades and junior high school than in others, although some parts of it will furnish suggestions as to areas of experimentation and investigation for younger students. This publication is the result of the "team" approach also. Personnel of the NASA Goddard Space Flight Center and the United States Office of Education, cooperated in the formation of the Committee on Space Science Oriented Mathematics, whose goal it has been to develop this publication.

This illustration-packed title covers the most outstanding events since humans landed on the moon. Missions to the different planets are presented, as are images and details of space stations, satellites, and Mars rovers. Even reluctant readers wonメt be able to stay away from this visual delight.

Book Mathematics for Human Flourishing

Download or read book Mathematics for Human Flourishing written by Francis Su and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2020-01-07 with total page 287 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The ancient Greeks argued that the best life was filled with beauty, truth, justice, play and love. The mathematician Francis Su knows just where to find them."--Kevin Hartnett, Quanta Magazine" This is perhaps the most important mathematics book of our time. Francis Su shows mathematics is an experience of the mind and, most important, of the heart."--James Tanton, Global Math Project For mathematician Francis Su, a society without mathematical affection is like a city without concerts, parks, or museums. To miss out on mathematics is to live without experiencing some of humanity's most beautiful ideas. In this profound book, written for a wide audience but especially for those disenchanted by their past experiences, an award-winning mathematician and educator weaves parables, puzzles, and personal reflections to show how mathematics meets basic human desires--such as for play, beauty, freedom, justice, and love--and cultivates virtues essential for human flourishing. These desires and virtues, and the stories told here, reveal how mathematics is intimately tied to being human. Some lessons emerge from those who have struggled, including philosopher Simone Weil, whose own mathematical contributions were overshadowed by her brother's, and Christopher Jackson, who discovered mathematics as an inmate in a federal prison. Christopher's letters to the author appear throughout the book and show how this intellectual pursuit can--and must--be open to all.
