Book excerpt: Follow in the footsteps of Vincent Van Gogh, from his birthplace in Zundert, Netherlands, to his last days in Auvers-sur-Oise, France, and explore the hidden inspirations behind the world-renowned artist’s most famous paintings in this beautiful art book and travelogue, illustrated with more than 250 black-and-white and full-color images throughout. In 1990, two photographers and art enthusiasts, Danilo De Marco and Mario Dondero, set out to explore the details of Vincent Van Gogh’s life, retracing his journey across Europe by foot and by train. Armed with the love and knowledge of Van Gogh’s work, they traveled from the Netherlands to England, Belgium, and France to take in the sights as Van Gogh might have seen them a century earlier. They also turned to art historian Gloria Fossi to better understand, experience, and contextualize Van Gogh’s brilliant mind, drawing insights from his personal letters and other historical documents. Van Gogh’s well-documented travels come alive in this gorgeous book which brings together the landscapes, architecture, portraits, and cultural references that inspired his art. The authors juxtapose vintage and contemporary photographs with Van Gogh’s renditions, demonstrating not only the passage of time, but Van Gogh’s unique artistic vision, brilliantly revealed brushstroke by brushstroke. From the Netherlands, where the artist was born, to his last days in France, no place he visited in his 37 years is left unexplored, and all have become timeless landmarks through his art. In Search of Van Gogh brings into focus the places and objects that inspired and fueled Van Gogh’s artistic genius and offers fresh insights into his prolific work and process. In searching for the artist’s mind and soul, the authors create a pointillistic portrait of a human being whose life was remarkable, and whose story must be shared for generations to come.

Book Van Gogh Paintings

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A dazzling selection of Van Gogh’s most famous paintings, as well as some lesser-known masterpieces, many drawn from the collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. Nearly 130 years after his death, Vincent van Gogh continues to exert a powerful fascination over viewers and historians. This superb book offers readers a selection of the artist’s most unforgettable canvases, as well as some lesser-known examples, many drawn from the collection of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam. The volume explores the works in the context of Van Gogh’s short but brilliant career, in which frequent spells of isolation were paired with lively engagement with his peers and the popular ideas of his time. Additionally, Van Gogh’s continuous stream of letters written to family and friends—one of the most important archival resources of nineteenth-century art—provides a narrative thread around which this study develops. In the text, art historian Belinda Thomson considers Van Gogh as a cosmopolitan figure who combined his art experiences and native traditions absorbed in Holland and in Victorian England, and later succeeded in making his mark upon the painting scene in France at one of its richest periods. This book will be a welcome resource for art lovers, offering a different take on one of history’s most interesting artists.

Download or read book Van Gogh to Mondrian written by Piet de Jonge and published by . This book was released on 2004 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Kroller-Muller Museum is one of the great art collections in Europe, yet it remains unknown to many Americans because of its remote location in the Hoge Veluwe National Park in rural southeast Netherlands. This beautifully illustrated book features highlights from the Museum's collection of late-nineteenth- and early-twentieth-century art, including more than a score of works by Vincent van Gogh. The Museum is the result of the passion of a singular collector: Helene Kroller-Muller (1869-1939). The wife of a Dutch shipping magnate, she used almost unlimited funds to amass an astounding collection in a short period of time. Beginning in the 1910s, she collected voraciously -- not only Van Gogh but Neo-Impressionist masters Seurat, Signac, and Denis, and Symbolists Redon and Toorop. She patronized and supported artists who were pioneering abstraction -- particularly Mondrian, Van Doesburg, and Van der Leck -- and collected the Cubists, including Picasso, Gris, and Leger. Mrs. Kroller-Muller had a consuming desire to create a museum where her collection could be displayed for the public. Over a period of more than twenty-five years, she worked with some of the leading architects of the early twentieth century -- H. P. Berlage, Mies van der Rohe, and Henry van de Velde -- and finally in 1938 her dream was realized with the opening of the institution that bears her name. Book jacket.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Barnes Foundation, established by scientist, entrepreneur, and educator Dr. Albert C. Barnes in 1922, is home to a legendary art collection. Barnes assembled one of the world’s largest and finest groups of post-impressionist and early modern paintings, with holdings by such luminaries as Renoir, Cézanne, Matisse, Picasso, Rousseau, Modigliani, Soutine, Manet, Monet, Seurat, Degas, Van Gogh, and Gauguin. The Foundation’s collection also holds significant examples of American art, including works by Demuth, Glackens, and the Prendergasts; African sculpture; Native American ceramics, jewelry, and textiles; Asian paintings, prints, and sculptures; medieval manuscripts and sculptures; Old Master paintings by El Greco, Rubens, Titian, and others; ancient Egyptian, Greek, and Roman art; and American and European decorative arts and metalwork. The presentation of the collection reflects Barnes’s educational and aesthetic approach: symmetrical “ensembles,” or wall compositions, combine works of different periods, mediums, cultures, and styles for the purpose of comparison and study. Texts by Judith F. Dolkart and Martha Lucy explore the Barnes Foundation’s collection, educational mission, ensembles, and individual works. Large color plates, little-seen archival photographs, and numerous gatefolds illustrate 150 of the greatest hits of the collection and twenty gallery ensembles.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "For lovers of art history, this lavishly illustrated and well-written book is an absolute gem." – Italia! Magazine Leonardo da Vinci was the epitome of the Renaissance humanist ideal, a logical polymath of epic proportions who excelled and had interests not just in art but in invention, anatomy, architecture, engineering, literature, mathematics, music, science, astronomy and more. His oeuvre is astounding and he is rightly famed for his masterpieces of painting such as the Mona Lisa and The Last Supper, and his astonishingly technical and graceful drawings. The phenomenon that was Leonardo would not of course have flourished to such an extent had it not been for the patronage and sponsorship of the Medici family, who commissioned a large proportion of the art and architecture of the era and fostered a fertile climate for creativity. This sumptuous new book offers a broader view of this master artist in the context of this environment, alongside the work of other key artists who benefited from the Medicis, from Brunelleschi through Donatello to Michelangelo and Raphael.
