And others: nevertheless I am bold to say that in no work on engraving in wood have 1 yet found any signs of choice or sufficient judgment. Good cuts and bad have been confounded together: and exact reproductions made from foul impressions, the ink over the sides of the lines too often supposed to be a portion of the engraving. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Wood-Engraving N this book I have attempted to gather and arrange such facts as should be known to men of cultivation interested in the art of engraving in wood. I have, therefore, disregard ed such matter as seems to belong rather to descriptive bib liography, and have treated wood-engraving, in its principal works, as a reflection of the life of men and an illustration of successive phases of civilization. Where there is much disputed ground, particularly in the early history of the art, the Writers on whom I have relied are referred to, and those who adopt a different view are named; but where the facts seemed plain, and are easily verifiable, reference did not ap pear necessary. I t In conclusion, I have the honor to acknowledge my ob ligations to the officers of the Boston Public Library, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, and the Harvard College Library, for permission to reproduce several cuts in their possession; and to Mr. Lindsay Swift, of the Boston Public Library, for the list of authorities at the end of the volume. Book Engravings on Wood Classic Reprint

Download or read book Engravings on Wood Classic Reprint written by Society of American Wood Engravers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-08 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Engravings on Wood Artists, too, manifested only a limited interest in drawing on the block. The obliteration of their work by the process of engraving it was alone an insurmountable barrier to progress in black and white drawing. The introduction of photography upon wood made it practicable to transfer to the block a drawing in black and white, a water color, or an oil painting. The result was that the reproduction of works of a very much higher class was begun, and a much greater degree of intimacy was established between the work of the engraver and the work of the artist. Nothing could be more natural than that in these circumstances the engravers should rapidly invade new fields and carry their artistic sympathies and instincts to the point of themselves becoming artists. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Treatise on Wood Engravings: Historical and Practical Tuouon several English authors have, in modern times, written on the origin and early history of wood engraving, yet no one has hitherto given, in a distinct work, a connected account of its progress from the earliest period to the present time; and no one, however confidently he may have expressed his opinion on the subject, appears to have thought it necessary to make him self acquainted with the practice of the art. The antiquity and early history of wood engraving appear to have been considered as themes which allowed of great scope for speculation, and required no practical knowledge of the art. It is from this cause that we find so many erroneous statements in almost every modern dissertation on wood engraving. Had the writers ever thought of appealing to a person practically acquainted with the art, whose early productions they professed to give some account of, their conjectures might, in many instances, have been spared; and had they, in matters requiring research, taken the pains to ex amine and judge for themselves, instead of adopting the opinions of others, they would have discovered that a considerable por tion of what they thus took on trust, was not in accordance with facts. As the antiquity and early history of wood engraving form a considerable portion of two expensive works which profess to give some account of the art, it has been thought that such a work as the present, combining the history with the practice of the art, and with numerous cuts illustrative of its progress, decline, and revival, might not be unfavourably received. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religious Emblems: Being a Series of Engravings on Wood We cannot conclude this rapid sketch of the history of wood engraving without observing, that this long-neglected art has lately excited the attention of Mr. West, Mr. Flaxman, and Mr. Stothard and from the love which these gentlemen are known to possess for every thing genuine or elevated, we may expect to see it, by their exertions, revived in all its former splendour, and restored to its ancient and legitimate rank. It will be observed, and possibly with some surprise, that in the foregoing account we have not hinted at the probability of any other material than wood having been used in the production of the engravings which have passed under our notice; we are not, however, ignorant that a doubt has arisen in the minds of some antiquaries upon this subject. Mr. Landseer, in the lectures which he delivered with so much eclat at the Royal Institution, gave it as his opinion, that type metal was formerly used instead of wood; that the lights were possibly corroded away, or that the tablet was cast from a prototype, or matrix, previously cut in intaglio. This opinion is grounded, first, on the freedom and frequency of the cross-hatchings, which distinguish the works of the old masters from modern wood engraving; and, secondly, on the circumstance of none of the old wooden blocks being now discoverable, notwithstanding the most diligent enquiry'. But with all our respect for the opinions of the ingenious lecturer. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
