When we consider theliteratureofthepast hundred earswecannot iailtoremark upontheextraordinaryan un recedented vogue of prosefiction, beginning with the s success of the Waverly novels of Scott 1n England 1n the first quar ter of the cent stimulated by the mdefatigable curiosity which sustains ehumancomecb'ofbalzacinfrancein the mid-years; and ennobled by the lofty veracity of Tol stoy's later studies of human strn es in Russia in the final demdes. Poets there were in the modern literatures, poets of high ambition and of genuine inspiration as well as sincere aspiration; historians and biographers, and emyists, there were in abundance; and yet the ists outnumbered the others and seemed at times almost to outshine them. Indeed, the attraction of fiction was so. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Modern Drama in Europe Classic Reprint

Download or read book Modern Drama in Europe Classic Reprint written by Storm Jameson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-13 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Drama in Europe AN attempt to reconstruct the dramatic pro gress of the last half-century might be justified on two grounds. There are indications that the drama of these years is already nearing definite reaction. This makes it possible to regard it as the rise and decline of forces even now ceasing to operate. With this recognition of coming change, a closer study of the period in question discovers lines along which the drama has developed. This essay is the attempt to trace those lines, and to suggest that the history of the drama during the past fifty years has been the history of a swift rise, and a slow descent to disintegration and unproductive repetition. The dominant dramatic art of the period has taken the form labelled' realism' in current critical cant; and almost contemporary with this in its origin, there is clearly to be seen a strain of revolt, which has made use of symbolism and of many of the trappings of romance. This spirit of revolt has assisted in the disintegration of the prevailing drama without offering much of value in its place. Book The Modern Drama an Essay in Interpretation Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Modern Drama an Essay in Interpretation Classic Reprint written by Ludwig Lewisohn and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2019-01-14 with total page 352 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Modern Drama an Essay in Interpretation With a few honourable exceptions books about books are apt, at present in America, to be any thing but critical. An account of the modern drama, therefore, that aims at historical orderliness and intellectual coherence need not, perhaps, offer an excuse for its existence. My study is not one of phases or aspects but of the whole subject which I have attempted to grasp and to interpret as a whole. If I have succeeded m any measure, this volume should prove of real usefulness to students, teachers and critics of the drama. I have omitted any discussion of the theatre of Italy and Spain. No criticism can be fruitful which is not based on an intimate acquaintance with the idiom which that literature employs. But this omission represents no absolute loss. Italy and Spain have followed and exemplified the tendencies and methods of the modern theatre. They have neither changed them nor originated others.
