Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Mosaics, 1902 Excellence may he considered in the light of'an axiom which need only he properly put to hecome self - evident. It is not excellence if it requires to he demonstrated as such; and thus to point out too particularly the merits of a work of art is to admit that they are not merits altogether. The name Mosaics, so says a noted correspoiident of ours, suggests a remark made by a lady thirty-eight years ago when passing this school. The street had just been Inacadamizeil. It consisted of finely broken rocks, rammed down into a sort of mosaic. The lady was fond of puns. As she crossed the rough way, the pointed rocks pressing on her thin shoes made her exclaim: This mosaic is not what it is cracked up to be. It makes my feet mos' ache. We indorse the sentiments of our noted correspondent who trusts that we will not make his head mos' ache with wit and learning, and we hope that you will consider our mosaics more than it is cracked up to be. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Evenings With the Master In the Cool of the Evening In the cool of the evening, when the low sweet whispers waken, When the laborers turn them homeward, and the weary have their will, When the censers of the roses o'er the forest-aisles are shaken, Is it but the wind that cometh o'er the far green hill? For they say 'tis but the sunset winds that wander through the heather, Rustle all the meadow-grass and bend the dewy fern; They say 'tis but the winds that bow the reeds in prayer together, And fill the shaken pools with fire along the shadowy burn. In the beauty of the twilight, in the Garden that He loveth, They have veiled His lovely vesture with the darkness of a name! Thro' His Garden, thro' His Garden, it is but the wind that moveth, No more; but O, the miracle, the miracle is the same! In the cool of the evening, when the sky is an old story Slowly dying, but remembered, ay, and loved with passion still, Hush! *** the fringes of His garment, in the fading golden glory, Softly rustling as He cometh o'er the far green hill. - Alfred Noyes. Book The Greatest Works of Selma Lagerl f

Download or read book The Greatest Works of Selma Lagerl f written by Selma Lagerlöf and published by Good Press. This book was released on 2023-12-12 with total page 2334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Good Press presents this meticulously edited and formatted Selma Lagerlöf collection. Selma Lagerlöf was a Swedish author and teacher. She was the first female writer to win the Nobel Prize in Literature. Through her studies in Stockholm, Lagerlöf reacted against the realism of contemporary Swedish-language writers such as August Strindberg. She began her first novel, Gösta Berling's Saga, while working as a teacher in Landskrona in 1887. A visit in 1900 to the American Colony in Jerusalem became the inspiration for Lagerlöf's book by that name. The royal family and the Swedish Academy gave her substantial financial support to continue her passion. Jerusalem was also acclaimed by critics, who began comparing her to Homer and Shakespeare, so that she became a popular figure both in Sweden and abroad. By 1895, she gave up her teaching to devote herself to her writing. In 1902, Lagerlöf was asked by the National Teacher's Association to write a geography book for children. She wrote The Wonderful Adventures of Nils, a novel about a boy from the southernmost part of Sweden, who had been shrunk to the size of a thumb and who travelled on the back of a goose across the country. Lagerlöf mixed historical and geographical facts about the provinces of Sweden with the tale of the boy's adventures until he managed to return home and was restored to his normal size. The novel is one of Lagerlöf's most well-known books, and it has been translated into more than 30 languages. Book excerpt: Guy Gavriel Kay, the international bestselling and multiple award-winning author of The Fionavar Tapestry, brings his unique storytelling imagination to an alternate Byzantine world… Sarantium is the golden city: holy to the faithful, exalted by the poets, jewel of the world and heart of an empire. Caius Crispus, known as Crispin, is a master mosaicist, creating beautiful art with colored stones and glass. Still grieving the loss of his family, he lives only for his craft—until an imperial summons draws him east to the fabled city. Bearing with him a Queen’s secret mission and seductive promise, and a talisman from an alchemist, Crispin crosses a land of pagan ritual and mortal danger, confronting legends and dark magic. Once in Sarantium, with its taverns and gilded sanctuaries, chariot races and palaces, intrigues and violence, Crispin must find his own source of power in order to survive. He finds it, unexpectedly, high on the scaffolding of his own greatest creation.
