Download or read book The Writing of Gods written by Racheli Shalomi-Hen and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2006 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book outlines the development of the divine classifiers in the Egyptian script system from the beginning of writing to the end of the Old Kingdom. The first part discusses the falcon on the standard and the ways in which ancient Egyptian writing system expressed the idea of divine kingship. The seated bearded man is the focus of the second part, in which the author follows the sign from its first appearance as a classifier of foreign peoples to its identification with the god Osiris. The third part is dedicated to divine markers and the structure of the divine category in the Pyramid Texts. This part surveys the special orthographic constraints of the Pyramid Texts, as well as the evolution of the female divine classifiers. Although the book concentrates on orthographic processes, it takes into account the broader religious context of the Old Kingdom. Hence, the relations between the sun-god Re and the king, as well as the special role of the Great God in the private inscriptions and the appearance of Osiris as a foreigner are also discussed.

This book was released on 1999 with total page 562 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Egyptian Old Kingdom (c. 2650-2150 BC) was an era of extraordinary artistic achievement-the period that gave us the Sphinx and the pyramids as well as a rich legacy of private tombs, wall paintings, reliefs, statuary, jewelry, and decorative arts. This book, the companion volume to a major traveling exhibition organized by New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Louvre in Paris, showcases the most impressive assemblage of Egyptian art and artifacts since the Tutankhamun exhibition of the late 1970s. Scholarly essays and 650 illustrations bring to life a remarkable panoply of Old Kingdom objects-temple and tomb reliefs, striking gold jewelry, handsome stone vessels, monumental statues, stelae, and exquisite statuettes. Together, text and images create a stunning tribute to the world of the Pharaohs"--Publisher's description.

Download or read book The Senedjemib Complex The Mastabas of Senedjemib Inti G 2370 Khnumenti G 2374 and Senedjemib Mehi G 2378 written by Edward Brovarski and published by Museum of Fine Arts Boston. This book was released on 2001 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This two-volume study of the Senedjemib Complex at Giza by Edward Borovarski owes a great debt to the work of Richard Lepsius in the mid-19th century and George A Reisner who excavated there in the early 20th century. The tombs of Senedjemib Inti (G2370), Khnumenti (G2374) and Senedjemib Mahi (G2378) which form the focus of this publication are three of the largest tombs in the complex, located at the northwest corner of the Great Pyramid. Excavations in 1912-13 revealed that the tombs of Mahi and Inti formed part of a great complex of family tombs erected around a paved court, and that four generations of the Senedjemib family served as viziers of Egypt and royal architects over a hundred year period in the later old Kingdom. Voluem one includes a complete history and description of all three tombs. Through the decoration and architecture of these tombs Brovarski traces the increasing trend in the elaboration of family tombs from the end of the fifth dynasty to the end of the sixth. Volume one also contains two lengthy autobiographical inscriptions.
Download or read book The Use of Documents in Pharaonic Egypt written by Christopher Eyre and published by OUP Oxford. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume reconstructs the history of documentary practice in pharaonic Egypt from the early Old Kingdom to the major administrative changes imposed by the colonizing regimes of the Graeco-Roman period. Relating administrative and legal practice to the physical practicalities of the media used for writing, and through the close reading of primary textual sources, it examines how different types of documents - private and official - were created and used. It explores the ways in which the writing of documents was embedded deeply in the interactions between customary social practices, which were essentially oral, and in the penetration of outside hierarchies into local government. Eyre argues that the potential of the written document as evidence or proof was never fully exploited in the pharaonic period, even though writing was a powerful symbol and display of hierarchical authority. He presents the government as a system rooted in personal prestige and patronage structures, lacking the effective departmental hierarchies and archive systems that would represent a true bureaucratic system.
