Book excerpt: Excerpt from Tracts on the Mass It would have been more natural to print the two Sarum Ordinaries of the Mass, one Of the fourteenth the other of the thirteenth century, side by Side. But it was not determined to include in this collection the ordinary of the thirteenth century until after the greater part of the volume had been printed, and the thirteenth century order thus stands by itself at the end of the collection. Book The Mass and Its Folklore Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mass and Its Folklore Classic Reprint written by John Hobson Matthews and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-28 with total page 140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mass and Its Folklore While some or us may be more attracted by the Church's conservatism and others by her vigorous modernity, we are all bound to respect equally Catholic antiquity and papal sanction. Both these authorities are of the highest kind - are, in fact, identical. Rome permits no deviation from the Catholic stan dard in her devotions, and the freshest flowers in her garden of the soul have their roots deep down in the rich soil of the Church's past. Book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea

Download or read book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea written by O. H. Peters and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Book The Mass in the Infant Church Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Mass in the Infant Church Classic Reprint written by Garrett Pierse and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-14 with total page 212 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mass in the Infant Church The aim of this treatise on The Mass in the Infant Church is not a one-sided defence of any thesis, nor an equally one-sided attack (5: any other. The writer has tried not to bring a decided judgment to his task; he has endeavoured not to read into early writers his own concepts, but, hearkening to all the witnesses, listening to investigators on both sides, leav ing aside opinions heard outside the court, to draw his conclusion after a full examination of the evidence. Whether he has discharged the duty of a faithful nar rator, whether he has given all the facts as he claims to have done, whether he has suppressed anything that might tell against his own interests, of this the reader is the judge. TO some it may seem a bold programme, or even a rash undertaking, to search for the Mass in the infant Church. But the inquiry is worth the effort. For the Protestant it is a momentous question whether the Mass existed in the early Church. For the Catholic it is not less important. Book The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office Classic Reprint written by A. G. Walpole Sayer and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-02-03 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sufficiency and Defects of the English Communion Office HE object which led to the enterprise of this subject was essentially practical. Considerable outcry had been raised against the interpolation into the service by the Celebrant of parts of the Unreformed Office. The outcry interpreted this action as throwing doubt or discredit on the Office of our Church. And this interpretation is justified by the open avowals of many who are addicted to this practice. They allege defect or deficiency in our Office. Others, indeed, without such allegation or conscious admission, defend their interpolations as conducing to greater fulness or richness. The object of this work in part'is to attempt to disprove the charges of insufficiency and to show the redundancy of such interpolations. The nature of the interpolations in View has been already defined. There is no reference to any private1 intercessions or devo tions of the Celebrant, but to the direct interpolation of portions of other Offices. Download or read book The Mass written by Adrian Fortescue and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-29 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Mass: A Study of the Roman Liturgy This book is intended to supply information about the history of the Roman liturgy. The dogmatic side of the Mass is discussed by the Bishop of Newport in the same series.1 The title shows that it is a study of the Roman rite. It is only in the Roman (or Gallican) rite that the Eucharistic service can correctly be called Mass. The chapter about other liturgies and the frequent references to them throughout are meant only to put our Roman Mass in its proper perspective and to illustrate its elements by com parison. In spite of the risk Of repetition, the clearest plan seemed to be to discuss first the origin and development of the Mass in general and then to go through the service as it stands now, adding notes to each prayer and ceremony.
