Book excerpt: Mrs Charlotte De Granville wanted a quiet, unobtrusive, not too clever private detective for a very discreet little job. The nature of the assignment dictated a certain economy of truth when it came to briefing said detective. He would detect and she would take care of the rest -- with extreme prejudice. Anthony M Moretti, failed golf pro, onetime Miami nightclub hustler and more recently PI specializing in divorce work, fitted the bill rather nicely. So Tony got the job and the kind of trip that would take him from the glitter of Cape Town's jet set to the rotten underbelly of pulsating Durban to the tropical paradise of the Comoros Islands. Somewhere along the way things become complicated. Things like a black eyed beauty with a voice like Nina Simone or a woman who could stomach a revolution but not a man's betrayal. A young mercenary with hope in his heart and technicolor illusions of an Africa long faded to dusty decay. And an ageing soldier of fortune who really should have known better...

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the submerged literature of ancient Greece; that is, all the texts produced for socially relevant events that have contributed to the configuration and articulation of ancient Greek culture as we know it. In particular, the hermeneutic tool of submerged literature may shed new light on the dynamics behind the 'emersion' or 'submersion' of certain texts during different periods. The category of submerged literature is extended here to include preserved and lost texts as well as those texts that can be reconstructed through investigation. The volume investigates the manifold speech acts that we know of through various sources and that, either from the outset or over the course of time, have been placed at the edge of diffusion, conservation and transmission. The essays contained in the volume deal with questions of hermeneutics, philology and methodology, as well as with epic cycles, lyric poetry, tragedy, comedy, satyr drama, and mime. By approaching these genres from the perspective of submerged literature, the book tries to provide a more precise contextualization of the texts within the communication system of ancient Greece. The book thus presents a new line of research and a series of studies that take a fresh look at the texts and all archaeological and iconographic sources relating to Greek culture, taking into account the results of ethnographic and anthropological research. This extensive investigation examines unique ancient Greek orality and literacy dynamics using a new hermeneutic frame that will hopefully reshape our understanding of ancient Greek culture.

Louka offers an unflinching examination of the uses and potential abuses of the nuclear instrument currently and in projected futures of the interlocking international war system and global economy. . . She looks squarely at the practice and inevitability of pre-emptive action in many of the contexts she projects. This is an important and timely study for anyone practicing or trying to understand international law and politics. From the foreword by W. Michael Reiman, Yale Law School, US It is often argued that the nuclear non-proliferation order divides the world into nuclear-weapon-haves and have-nots, creating a nuclear apartheid. Employing a careful and nuanced discussion of this claim, Elli Louka examines the architecture of the nuclear non-proliferation order, the fairness and effectiveness of international and regional institutions and scenarios for the future of nuclear weapons. A sophisticated study of a complex issue, this book is a must-read for policymakers and those who wish to understand the intricacies and challenges of developing institutions to address the nuclear weapon threat.
