Download or read book The Marrow of The Marrow of Modern Divinity Expanded Edition written by Andy Wilson and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 282 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Edward Fisher's "The Marrow of Modern Divinity" is written as a dialogue that draws upon the insights of Martin Luther, John Calvin, and other notable 16th and 17th century Protestants to distinguish the law from the gospel and to confront the errors of antinomianism and legalism. While these issues are of perennial relevance for Christ's church, the antiquity, intricacy, and format of Fisher's book can make it daunting for contemporary readers. In this simplified version, most of Fisher's material has been retained, the best insights from Thomas Boston's 18th century annotations have been incorporated directly into the dialogue, and the content has been revised and edited to make it more accessible for today's readers. This second, expanded edition contains an entirely new section (Part 4) that contains a simplified version of the material that Fisher published in 1649 as the second part of "The Marrow." Andy Wilson is the pastor of Grace Presbyterian Church (OPC) in Laconia, New Hampshire. His writings have appeared in Modern Reformation magazine, Ordained Servant journal, and online at the Aquila Report.

Colquhoun especially excels in showing how important the law serves as a believer’s rule of life without compromising the freeness and fullness of the gospel. In one of the greatest Reformed studies of the topic, Colquhoun encourages believers to combat legalism and antinomianism by joyfully embracing a correct view of the law.

Download or read book The Whole Christ written by Sinclair B. Ferguson and published by Crossway. This book was released on 2016-01-14 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the days of the early church, Christians have struggled to understand the relationship between two seemingly contradictory concepts in the Bible: law and gospel. If, as the apostle Paul says, the law cannot save, what can it do? Is it merely an ancient relic from Old Testament Israel to be discarded? Or is it still valuable for Christians today? Helping modern Christians think through this complex issue, seasoned pastor and theologian Sinclair Ferguson carefully leads readers to rediscover an eighteenth-century debate that sheds light on this present-day doctrinal conundrum: the Marrow Controversy. After sketching the history of the debate, Ferguson moves on to discuss the theology itself, acting as a wise guide for walking the path between legalism (overemphasis on the law) on the one side and antinomianism (wholesale rejection of the law) on the other.

Michael Horton, a preeminent voice for reformation in the church, has drawn together a group of leaders in the evangelical church to answer this question once and for all. - W. Robert Godfrey - Michael Horton - Alister McGrath - Kim Riddlebarger - Rick Ritchie - Rod Rosenbladt - Paul Schaefer - Robert Strimple These writers draw on Scripture, theology, and church history to address the Lordship salvation issue. They explain their positions clearly, taking care to avoid promulgating legalistic rules people need to follow to be considered Christian. But neither do they convey the feeling that rules no longer matter.
Download or read book The Marrow of Certainty written by Chun Tse and published by Vandenhoeck & Ruprecht. This book was released on 2023-06-12 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Assurance was a central issue for the eminent Scottish theologian-pastor Thomas Boston long before it emerged as a focal point of the theological debate in the Marrow Controversy. In The Marrow of Certainty, Chun Tse presents the first full-length study of Boston's theology of assurance in six dimensions: trinitarian, covenantal, Christological, soteriological, ecclesiastical, and sacramental. This work not only furnishes the first-ever intellectual biography of Boston in his Scottish context and controversies, but it also cross-studies the theology of the Marrow of Modern Divinity with Boston's notes. This research argues that Boston's doctrine of assurance centres on union and communion with Christ, the architectonic principle of his theology. The book challenges the common conception that Boston's theology merely follows Calvin, the Scots Confession, the Marrow, the Westminster Standards, and Scottish federalism. Boston, most strikingly, holds in tension assurance as intrinsic to faith—itself a gift from God's sovereignty in election—while insisting on self-examination as a human responsibility. This salient mark of his doctrine of assurance originates from his assertion that Christ died for the elect alone but all—elect or not—have the warrant to receive Christ. As such, assurance is, theologically, a divine gift and, pastorally, a human endeavour. Certainty is thus both extra nos and intra nos. Boston, this study reveals, has a potent and enduring power to speak on the perennial issue of assurance, rooted in the person of Christ, whom he considers as being the covenant itself.

Book excerpt: A select crew accepts the dangerous mission to explore a planet hidden in a massive spaceship in this space opera adventure by a New York Times bestseller. “Marrow is magnificent. It combines epic sweep with living characters and a depth of vision that we see all too seldom.” —Jack McDevitt The Ship has roamed the universe for longer than any of the immortal crew can recall, its true purpose and origins unknown. It is larger than many planets, housing thousands of alien races and just as many secrets. Now one of those secrets has been discovered: at the center of the Ship is . . . a planet. Marrow. But when a team of the Ship’s best and brightest are sent down to investigate, will they unlock the secrets of its creation—or will they be destroyed by the forces that have hidden Marrow for millennia and bring doom to everyone on board? Hugo and Nebula Award–nominated author Robert Reed spins an extraordinary epic of adventure and wonder on an incredible scale in this novel based on his acclaimed novella. “A bold work by a visionary writer.” —David Brin “With Marrow, Robert Reed has written a space opera for the new century, an interstellar opus as mind-boggling as the vast starship he elegantly depicts. E. E. “Doc” Smith has found his successor.” —Allen Steele “With his command of prose, characterization, and ideas, Robert Reed is the new century’s most compelling SF voice. Marrow is the highest of high concepts, one of the most original visions in a long while.” —Stephen Baxter
