Book The Joint Hindu Family

Download or read book The Joint Hindu Family written by Günther-Dietz Sontheimer and published by New Delhi : Munshiram Manoharlal Publishers. This book was released on 1977 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Description: The laying at rest of the joint Hindu family is said to have been initiated at least from the point of law and its disappearance in society has frequently been forecast by sociologists and by public opinion. Now that the controversy between protagonists and reformers seems to have been subsided it may be the right time for re-examining without bias and prejudice an institution which has often been misunderstood and misinterpreted. The present study traces the outlines of the evolution of this institution questioning some assumptions regarding its history, nature and function. It advances a plea for and does not preclude a joint effort of various disciplines like history, law, sociology, and psychology etc. to assess an institution which is responsible for much which is characteristically Indian.

Book Women and The Hindu Right

Download or read book Women and The Hindu Right written by Urvashi Butalia and published by Zubaan. This book was released on 1995-06-30 with total page 321 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work attempts to break new ground by posing questions about women’s activism within the Hindu right, a crucial issue that has barely been addressed. These essays look at gender within the framework of larger questions: the organizational history of the formation – still developing – we call the Hindu Right; its relationship to change in religious processes, economic developments, caste politics and constitutional crisis over the last few decades. The essays also pose difficult questions for the theory and practice of feminist politics which has tended to identify women’s political activism with emancipatory politics. Right-wing movements, it has been assumed, have – because of their emphasis on “tradition” – an inverse relationship to women’s politicization. Yet violently communal politics have pulled women into militant politics. What do these and other questions and paradoxes mean for the theory and practice of “feminist” politics, and how do right-wing strategies and tactics compare with those developed by radical women’s groups?

Book The Greatest Farce of History

Download or read book The Greatest Farce of History written by Gopal Chowdhary and published by Partridge Publishing. This book was released on 2014-03-04 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book seeks to analyse the faultlines and subversion in the ancient history of India in the praxis of social domination and systematic marginalization and obliteration of traditional political elites or traditional Kshatriya that social elites (Priestly class or caste) of ancient India achieved, just to maintain their socio-political domination and hegemony. This rather myopic act led to the balkanization of socio-political scape of mediaeval Indiaresulting into subjugation, plunder and foreign invasions and rule for one thousand years. Through the case study of Krishna and Mahabharata period, the book tries to illuminate the so called Dark Age of the Indian history. Despite the numerous archaeological proves found in the form of Painted Grey Ware (PGW) associated with Mahabharata period and Black Red Ware (BRW) with different shades, associated with Krishna and Yadavas which tally with details of different scriptures and epic, nothing seems to be happening in this regard. This very fact seems to underline the continued saga of subversion and domination that seemed to have been ingrained in the post-Krishna-and-Mahabharata period. Once the deification and mystification of great historical personality and period such as Krishna and Mahabharata was started just to negate the socio-political revolutions ushered into, it seems to have continued and institutionalized.

Book Tellings and Texts

Download or read book Tellings and Texts written by Francesca Orsini and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2015-10-05 with total page 568 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining materials from early modern and contemporary North India and Pakistan, Tellings and Texts brings together seventeen first-rate papers on the relations between written and oral texts, their performance, and the musical traditions these performances have entailed. The contributions from some of the best scholars in the field cover a wide range of literary genres and social and cultural contexts across the region. The texts and practices are contextualized in relation to the broader social and political background in which they emerged, showing how religious affiliations, caste dynamics and political concerns played a role in shaping social identities as well as aesthetic sensibilities. By doing so this book sheds light into theoretical issues of more general significance, such as textual versus oral norms; the features of oral performance and improvisation; the role of the text in performance; the aesthetics and social dimension of performance; the significance of space in performance history and important considerations on repertoires of story-telling. The book also contains links to audio files of some of the works discussed in the text. Tellings and Texts is essential reading for anyone with an interest in South Asian culture and, more generally, in the theory and practice of oral literature, performance and story-telling.

Book Ethnicity Gender and the Subversion of Nationalism

Download or read book Ethnicity Gender and the Subversion of Nationalism written by Bodil Folke Frederiksen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 125 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume explores the politics of identity by analysing the intersections between ethnicity, gender and nationalism in developing societies. These markers of identity are not understood as constituting essences, but as springing from people's core experiences, yearnings and strategic life plans in a context where resources are scarce. As such, identities may be, and are, contested. The intersections are traced across three areas: social and cultural reproduction; ideologies, stereotypes and practices; and nationalist politics and discourse which has tended to remove women from the public arena and construct an ideal of women's domesticity.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rich and evocative bas-reliefs of Angkor Wat have captured the imagination of travelers, artists, and scholars for centuries. Built for the Khmer king Suryavarman II in the twelfth century, the enormous temple complex consists of an outer enclosure surrounded by a moat, with three further concentric rectangular enclosures inside it. The bas-reliefs featured in this book are carved on the walls of the third enclosure. Jaroslav Poncar has brilliantly captured the detail of these huge reliefs, measuring more than two meters in height and five hundred meters in overall length, using the high-precision technique of slit-scan photography. One hundred full-page panoramic photographs bring readers within the very walls of Angkor. Scenes from the great Indian epics, the Ramayana and Mahabharata are expansively explained and interpreted by Angkor expert Thomas S. Maxwell.

Book Women States and Nationalism

Download or read book Women States and Nationalism written by Sita Ranchod-Nilsson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2003-09-02 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Women, States and Nationalism counters this attitude and examines the many and contradictory ways in which women negotiate their places in 'the nation'. The volume includes theoretical essays that explore the multiple ways in which the very concept of 'nation' is based upon notions of family, sexuality and gender power which are often overlooked of downplayed by 'male-stream' scholarship. It gathers together an outstanding panel of feminist scholars and area studies specialists, who, through a series of focused case studies, analyse diverse issues which include; *gender and sectarian conflict in Northern Ireland *the paradox of Israeli women soldiers *women, civic duty and the military in the USA *the Hindu Right in India *power, agency and representation in Zimbabwe *political identity and heterosexism. This timely volume is a highly valuable resource for students and scholars of Nationalism, Internationalism Studies and Women's Studies.
