Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Knot Tied: Marriage Ceremonies of All Nations The very favourable reception accorded both by the press and the public to my last work, entitled the last has induced me to issue a. Companion volume on a more genial and cheerful subject, namely, that of marriage, including a succinct account of the wedding ceremonies, customs and forms of the principal countries of the world, interspersed with notices of eccentric and local nuptial proceedings, irregular marriages, the anti quity and signification of the wedding-ring, wedding poesies, and other matters pertaining to the Holy State, which I trust will be received and read with equal if not greater interest. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Marriage: The Ceremony, History and Significance; Ritual, Practical and Archaeological Notes; And the Text of the English, Roman, Greek, and Jewish Ceremonies In this self-trusting, restraint-hating, bond-break ing age, when the true meaning of Liberty is so widely ignored and so often misunderstood, it need not be said that the conception of the Marriage tie, as most generally current among the masses of men today, has not escaped a certain degree of obscurity, not to say falsity; and with the spread of the democratic sentiment in all lands and the increasing exaltation of the individual, both this obscurity and this misunderstanding, even under our brightening Christian civilization, appear rather to be deepening than clearing away. It seems therefore necessary to observe here that there are three aspects of Marriage, each of which in its sphere is very real and very true, and has its own important bearing on the nature of the engagement and the indelibility of the union. These aspects are, that which appears from the point of view of the State; that which appears from the point of view of the Church; and that which appears from the point of view of Personal Sentiment, or natural Love, so-called. Book Parsi Food and Drinks and Customs

Download or read book Parsi Food and Drinks and Customs written by B J Manekshaw and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2000-10-14 with total page 371 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A treasure-house of recipes and customs that define the Parsi way of life Celebrations, rituals and food inevitably go together. And so it is with the Parsis. From Navroz, the dawn of the Parsi New Year, to Navjote, the initiation ceremony of a young child, lagan or marriage, jashans and ghambhars, there is a variety of food to suit every occasion. In this unique book, Bhicoo J. Manekshaw takes the reader on a journey far beyond the traditional stereotypical dhan sakh recipe. For those who love fish, there is a choice of patrani machchi (fish in banana leaves), masala ni machchi or the famed tarapori patio made with sookha boomla (Bombay duck), amongst many others. The Parsi weakness for eggs, on the other hand, has created a range of mouth-watering dishes from the kera per eeda (eggs cooked on bananas) to the humble scrambled egg. There are also teatime snacks, sweets, and desserts and a chapter on kitchen medicine straight from grandmother’s recipe book. Interlaced with the recipes is the author’s piquant description of the customs, rituals and ceremonies that form the Parsi way of life.

Book excerpt: "The Parsis of India" examines a much-neglected area of Asian Studies. In tracing keypoints in the development of the Parsi community, it depicts the Parsis' history, and accounts for their ability to preserve, maintain and construct a distinct identity. For a great part the story is told in the colonial setting of Bombay city. Ample attention is given to the Parsis' evolution from an insular minority group to a modern community of pluralistic outlook. Filling the obvious lacunae in the literature on British "colonialism," Indian society and history, and, last but not least, "Zoroastrianism," this book broadens our knowledge of the interaction of colonialism and colonial groups, and elucidates the significant role of the Parsis in the commercial, educational, and civic milieu of Bombay colonial society.

Book Law and Identity in Colonial South Asia

Download or read book Law and Identity in Colonial South Asia written by Mitra Sharafi and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-21 with total page 369 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the legal culture of the Parsis, or Zoroastrians, an ethnoreligious community unusually invested in the colonial legal system of British India and Burma. Rather than trying to maintain collective autonomy and integrity by avoiding interaction with the state, the Parsis sank deep into the colonial legal system itself. From the late eighteenth century until India's independence in 1947, they became heavy users of colonial law, acting as lawyers, judges, litigants, lobbyists, and legislators. They de-Anglicized the law that governed them and enshrined in law their own distinctive models of the family and community by two routes: frequent intra-group litigation often managed by Parsi legal professionals in the areas of marriage, inheritance, religious trusts, and libel, and the creation of legislation that would become Parsi personal law. Other South Asian communities also turned to law, but none seems to have done so earlier or in more pronounced ways than the Parsis.

Book Food Feasts and Faith 2 volumes

Download or read book Food Feasts and Faith 2 volumes written by Paul Fieldhouse and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2017-04-17 with total page 714 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An indispensable resource for exploring food and faith, this two-volume set offers information on food-related religious beliefs, customs, and practices from around the world. Why do Catholics eat fish on Fridays? Why are there retirement homes for aged cows in India? What culture holds ceremonies to welcome the first salmon? More than five billion people worldwide claim a religious identity that shapes the way they think about themselves, how they act, and what they eat. Food, Feasts, and Faith: An Encyclopedia of Food Culture in World Religions explores how the food we eat every day often serves purposes other than to keep us healthy and stay alive: we eat to express our faith and to adhere to ethnic or cultural traditions that are part of who we are. This book provides readers with an understanding of the rich world of food and faith. It contains more than 200 alphabetically arranged entries that describe the beliefs and customs of well-established major world religions and sects as well as those of smaller faith communities and new religious movements. The entries cover topics such as religious food rules, religious festivals and symbolic foods, and vegetarianism and veganism, as well as general themes such as rites of passage, social justice, hospitality, and compassion. Each entry on religion explains what the religious dietary laws and guidelines are and how these were interpreted and put into practice historically and in modern settings. The coverage also includes important festivals and feast days as well as significant religious figures and organizations. Additionally, some 160 sidebars provide examples and more detailed information as well as fun facts.
