Book excerpt: "The Marquise de Brinvilliers" is a historical novel written by Alexandre Dumas, the prolific French author best known for his swashbuckling adventures like "The Three Musketeers" and "The Count of Monte Cristo." Published in 1839, this novel is based on the true story of Marie-Madeleine-Marguerite d'Aubray, the Marquise de Brinvilliers, who was infamous for her involvement in a series of poisonings in 17th-century France. Dumas masterfully weaves together history and fiction to create a compelling narrative that captures the intrigue and drama of the Marquise's life. The story unfolds against the backdrop of the decadent court of King Louis XIV, where political intrigue and personal vendettas abound. The Marquise de Brinvilliers is portrayed as a complex and enigmatic character, driven by a mixture of ambition, passion, and revenge. Her descent into darkness and her willingness to resort to poison to achieve her goals make her a fascinating yet morally ambiguous figure. Through vivid descriptions and captivating storytelling, Dumas immerses readers in the world of 17th-century France, complete with its opulent palaces, shadowy alleys, and Machiavellian politics. The novel is filled with suspenseful twists and turns as the authorities close in on the Marquise and her co-conspirators, leading to a dramatic climax. "The Marquise de Brinvilliers" showcases Dumas's talent for crafting historical fiction that is both entertaining and thought-provoking. It offers readers a thrilling glimpse into the dark underbelly of French society and the lengths to which people will go in pursuit of power and revenge.

Book excerpt: BRINVILLIERS, MARIE MADELEINE MARGUERITE D'AUBRAY, MARQUISE DE (c. 1630-1676), French poisoner, daughter of Dreux d'Aubray, civil lieutenant of Paris, was born in Paris about 1630. In 1651 she married the marquis de Brinvilliers, then serving in the regiment of Normandy. Contemporary evidence describes the marquise at this time as a pretty and much-courted little woman, with a fascinating air of childlike innocence. In 1659 her husband introduced her to his friend Godin de Sainte-Croix, a handsome young cavalry officer of extravagant tastes and bad reputation, whose mistress she became. Their relations soon created a public scandal, and as the marquis de Brinvilliers, who had left France to avoid his creditors, made no effort to terminate them, M. d'Aubray secured the arrest of Sainte-Croix on a lettre de cachet. For a year Sainte-Croix remained a prisoner in the Bastille, where he is popularly supposed to have acquired a knowledge of poisons from his fellow-prisoner, the Italian poisoner Exili. When he left the Bastille, he plotted with his willing mistress his revenge upon her father. She cheerfully undertook to experiment with the poisons which Sainte-Croix, possibly with the help of a chemist, Christopher Glaser, prepared, and found subjects ready to hand in the poor who sought her charity, and the sick whom she visited in the hospitals. Meanwhile Sainte-Croix, completely ruined financially, enlarged his original idea, and determined that not only M. Dreux d'Aubray but also the latter's two sons and other daughter should be poisoned, so that the marquise de Brinvilliers and himself might come into possession of the large family fortune.

Book excerpt: In The Marquise of O-, a virtuous widow finds herself unaccountably pregnant. And although the baffled Marquise has no idea when this happened, she must prove her innocence to her doubting family and discover whether the perpetrator is an assailant or lover. Michael Kohlhaas depicts an honourable man who feels compelled to violate the law in his search for justice, while other tales explore the singular realm of the uncanny, such as The Beggarwoman of Locarno, in which an old woman's ghost drives a heartless nobleman to madness, and St Cecilia, which portrays four brothers possessed by an uncontrollable religious mania. The stories collected in this volume reflect the preoccupations of Heinrich von Kleist (1777-1811) with the deceptiveness of human nature and the unpredictability of the physical world.

Book The Story of the Marquise Marquis de Banneville

Download or read book The Story of the Marquise Marquis de Banneville written by Charles Perrault and published by Modern Language Assn of Amer. This book was released on 2004 with total page 66 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The beautiful Marquise de Banneville meets a handsome marquis, and they fall in love. But the young woman is actually a young man (brought up as a girl and completely in the dark about her--or his--true sex), while the marquis is actually a young woman who likes to cross-dress. Will they live happily ever after? In the introduction, Joan DeJean presents the fascinating puzzle of authorship of this lighthearted gender-bending tale written in the late seventeenth century in France. Was it François-Timoléon de Choisy, an abbot who was happiest in drag? Marie-Jeanne L'Héritier, an outspoken defender of women's writing of her day? Or Charles Perrault, L'Héritier's uncle and the famous author of such fairy tales as "Sleeping Beauty"? DeJean argues that the tale was a collaboration of all three and discusses the permeable borderline between masculinity and femininity, transvestism, and tolerance--then and now.
