Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has been widely recognized that the "new physics" results from a high energy collider are related to the detector capabilities, and that future detec tors must solve the problems presented by the new environment. Vertex detectors, in particular, will have to sustain enormous rates, have a great resistance to radiation damage, while retaining good spatial accuracy. Promising technologies are emerging, and gaseous detectors are improving: this workshop was intended as a point of reference towards future detectors, with particular emphasis on experimental results achieved so far. We wish to thank the Ettore Majorana Center for the splendid hospitality in Erice; and the secretaries of the conference, R. Nania and G. Anzivino for their hard work in collecting and organizing these proceedings. F. Villa Stanford Linear Accelerator Center Stanford University v CONTENTS Tracking at 1 Te V A. Book Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics IV

Download or read book Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics IV written by Thomas Ferbel and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 594 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fourth Advanced Study Institute (ASI) on Techniques and Concepts of High Energy Physics was held once again at the Hotel on the Cay, in the scenic harbor of Christiansted, St. Croix, U.S. Virgin Islands. The ASI brought together a total of 67 participants, from 17 different countries. It was a great success, due to the dedication of the inspiring lecturers, the exceptional student body, and, of course, the beautiful setting. The primary support for the meeting was again provided by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO. The ASI was cosponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy, by Fermilab, by the National Science Foundation, and by the University of Rochester. A special contri bution from the Oliver S. and Jennie R. Donaldson Charitable Trust provided an important degree of flexibility, as well as· support for worthy students from developing nations. As in the case of the previous ASI's, the'scientific program was designed for advanced graduate students and recent PhD recipients in experimental particle physics. The present volume of lectures should complement the material published in the first three ASI's, and prove to be of value to a wider audience of physicists. It is a pleasure to acknowledge the encouragement and support that I have continued to receive from colleagues and friends in organizing this meeting. I am indebted to the members of my Advisory Committee for their infinite patience and excellent advice. I am grateful to my distinguished lecturers for participating in the ASI.

The expert will find critical information that is so far only available in various slide presentation scattered over the world wide web. This practical introduction of silicon sensor technology and its day to day life in the lab also offers many examples to illustrate problems and their solutions over several detector generations. The new edition gives a detailed overview of the silicon sensor technology used at the LHC, from basic principles to actual implementation to lessons learned.

Book High Energy Electron positron Physics

Download or read book High Energy Electron positron Physics written by Ahmed Ali and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1988 with total page 896 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the termination of the physics program at PETRA, and with the start of TRISTAN and the SLC and later LEP, an era of e+e- physics has come to an end and a new one begins. The field is changing from a field of few specialists, to becoming one of the mainstream efforts of the high energy community. It seems appropriate at this moment to summarize what has been learned over the past years, in a way most useful to any high energy physicists, in particular to newcomers in the e+e- field. This is the purpose of the book. This book should be used as a reference for future workers in the field of e+e- interactions. It includes the most relevant data, parametrizations, theoretical background, and a chapter on detectors.

Book Electroweak Effects at High Energies

Download or read book Electroweak Effects at High Energies written by Harvey B. Newman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 861 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first Europhysics Study Conference on Electroweak Effects at High Energies was held at the "Ettore Majorana" Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice, Sicily from February 1 -12, 1983. The conference was attended by 61 physicists from 11 countries. The conference was sponsored by the European Physical Society, the Italian Ministry of Public Education, the Italian Ministry of Technological Research, the Sicilian Regional Government and the California Institute of Technology. CONFERENCE FORMAT The Study Conference followed a new intensive format in which the state of our knowledge of the electroweak interaction, and the relation of the electroweak sector to Grand Unified and Superunified Theories was reviewed in some depth. During the two week conference, 54 experimental and theoretical talks were presented, and four evening discussion sessions were held. The Erice surroundings, the wide-ranging conference program, and the fact that nearly all of the participants were directly involved in recent major experimental or theoretical developments, led to animated and very friendly discussions. Participants had the rare opportunity to view most of the major trends in high energy physics in a short interval of time, and to discuss and contemplate the trends in the uniquely peaceful yet stimulating atmosphere which is an Erice tradition.
