Book The Marine Fauna of the British Isles and North West Europe Introduction and protozoans to arthropods

Download or read book The Marine Fauna of the British Isles and North West Europe Introduction and protozoans to arthropods written by P. J. Hayward and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 696 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first part of a comprehensive two-volume treatise that describes and illustrates over 2,000 marine species, ranging from protozoans to fishes, native to the coastal waters of the British Isles and north-western Europe. The most complete account available of its kind, the books cover all benthic habitats, from the intertidal zone to a depth of approximately 30 meters. Each major animal group is covered, with information on the morphology, biology, ecology of representative species, and techniques for their collection and study. Estuarine and supralittoral faunas are also described. Identification is facilitated by dichotomous keys to families and then to genera and species. Short diagnostic accounts are given for each family and higher taxon, and descriptions of all species are followed by notes on their ecological and geographical distribution. Line drawings are also included to help clarify the material presented in the text.

  • Publisher : Garland Science
  • Release : 2008-02-01
  • ISBN : 0203885228
  • Pages : 497 pages

Download or read book Biology of Fishes written by Quentin Bone and published by Garland Science. This book was released on 2008-02-01 with total page 497 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Third Edition of Biology of Fishes is chiefly about fish as remarkably efficient machines for coping with the many problems that life in water entails, and looks at many such special cases. Fishes form the largest group of vertebrates, with around 20,000 known species, and they display a remarkable diversity of size, shape, internal structure and ecology to cope with environments ranging from transient puddles to the abyssal depths of the sea. Biology of Fishes does not try to cover all aspects of fish biology, but focuses on the ingenious ways in which fish have resolved the particular problems that come from living in water, especially body fluid regulation, locomotion, feeding mechanisms, and sensory systems. Enough detail is provided for the reader to be able to go on and use primary research papers. Each chapter has been thoroughly updated and a new chapter on the immune system has been added. This is an ideal textbook for students of fish biology and any of the branches of aquatic biology. Given its skilful combination of breadth and detail, the book also provides a manageable review of fish biology for experienced biologists.

Book Development of Sea Urchins Ascidians and Other Invertebrate Deuterostomes Experimental Approaches

Download or read book Development of Sea Urchins Ascidians and Other Invertebrate Deuterostomes Experimental Approaches written by Charles A. Ettensohn and published by Gulf Professional Publishing. This book was released on 2004-10-22 with total page 948 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a practical guide to experimental methods for studying the development of invertebrate deuterostomes, such as sea urchins, ascidians, hemichordates, and amphioxus. These model organisms are of contemporary and historical importance to the study of developmental biology, particularly genomic research. The chapters provide detailed experimental protocols that cover a broad range of topics in modern experimental methods. Topics covered range from rearing embryos to the care of adult animals, while also presenting the basic experimental methods including light and electron microscopy, used to study gene expression, transgenics, reverse genetics, and genomic approaches. * Covers a wide range of methods, from classical embryology through modern genomics * Discusses animals related to vertebrates, providing a valuable evolutionary perspective * Includes a practical guide to the use of sea urchins in the teaching laboratory

Book Excavations at Cill Donnain

Download or read book Excavations at Cill Donnain written by Mike Parker Pearson and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2014-06-30 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The SEARCH (Sheffield Environmental and Archaeological Research Campaign in the Hebrides) project began in 1987 and covers the Scotland’s Outer Hebrides. The aim of the project is to investigate how human societies adapted in the long-term to the isolated environment of the Outer Hebrides. The first major excavation on South Uist discovered that what was thought to be a shell midden at Cill Donnain was in fact a wheelhouse, a type of dwelling used in the period c.300 BC – AD 500; under which lay the remains of a Bronze Age settlement. This settlement was partly investigated by Marik Zvelebil in 1991 and then later by Mike Parker Pearson and Kate MacDonald in 2003. The site itself is situated at the foot of a high steep-sided dune on the eastern edge of a large sand valley, close to the western shore of Loch Cill Donnain. The archaeological report of the excavation at the Cill Donnain wheelhouse shows that, in comparison with contemporary neighbouring settlements, it was unlikely that each was an independent unit and that they were linked by social and economic inter-dependency. The wheelhouse thus provides striking new evidence that contributes to developing theories about the social, material and economic life in the period. This volume presents the extensive archaeological evidence found at the site, including pottery, faunal remains and a variety of bone and metal tools, illustrating that the Cill Donnain landscape is rich in archaeological sites of all periods from the Beaker to the post-Medieval.

Book Not Just for Show

Download or read book Not Just for Show written by Daniella Bar-Yosef Mayer and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-31 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beads, beadwork, and personal ornaments are made of diverse materials such as shell, bone, stones, minerals, and composite materials. Their exploration from geographical and chronological settings around the world offers a glimpse at some of the cutting edge research within the fast growing field of personal ornaments in humanities’ past. Recent studies are based on a variety of analytical procedures that highlight humankind’s technological advances, exchange networks, mortuary practices, and symbol-laden beliefs. Papers discuss the social narratives behind bead and beadwork manufacture, use and disposal; the way beads work visually, audibly and even tactilely to cue wearers and audience to their social message(s). Understanding the entangled social and technical aspects of beads require a broad spectrum of technical and methodological approaches including the identification of the sources for the raw material of beads. These scientific approaches are also combined in some instances with experimentation to clarify the manner in which beads were produced and used in past societies.
