Book excerpt: Blue Growth and Blue Economy in the Context of Development Policies and Priorities in Malaysia highlights the significance of introducing ecological perspectives to seafood production and explains the contribution of this sector to sustainable development goals. Structured in five chapters, the book explains the relevance of harmonizing the three interconnected elements: economic growth, environmental compatibility, and social inclusion in seafood security. Chapter 2 deals with the blue growth and blue economy perspectives, Chapters 3 and 4 cover the current drivers of blue growth and emerging areas of the blue economy. Chapter 5 discusses the significance of higher education in seafood security and explains how a ‘systems approach’ can help in making sense of scientific knowledge and capacity building for addressing some of the most critical issues facing the world. Chapter 6 sheds light on the matters related to gender equity in blue growth. There are radical ideas in this book that require bold policy decisions for more applied and problem-solving research, giving due credence to scientific advice in decision-making, graduate employment, the imperatives of aligning national development priorities with the global development goals.

Book Microplastic Contamination in Aquatic Environments

Download or read book Microplastic Contamination in Aquatic Environments written by Eddy Y Zeng and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2023-11-10 with total page 448 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second edition of Microplastic Contamination in Aquatic Environments: An Emerging Matter of Environmental Urgency presents 14 chapters, through which a team of global, expert contributors cover a full range of microplastic research. The first chapter describes the general patterns for sources, occurrence, and transport of microplastics to lead off the book. The next batch of chapters covers sampling analytical methods for quantifying microplastics in the environment, followed by chapters addressing the association of chemicals with microplastics. A large cluster of chapters focus on the fate and transport of microplastics in wastewater treatment plants, freshwater systems, marine environment, terrestrial settings, and riverine runoff that connects terrestrial and marine systems. The next few chapters examine biotransport and effects of microplastics in organisms. The last two chapters are dedicated to two emerging research areas: nanoplastics in the environment and management strategies for global plastic pollution. Outlooks for future research to better understand the situation and further improvements of microplastic research are also covered. In the 6 years since the previous edition published, this fast-moving area has evolved, and the contents of this revision reflect that. There are numerous brand-new chapters, chapters that have been revised, and chapters that have been completely refocused. This book provides an overview of microplastics research. It is a guide for researchers to better understand the occurrence of microplastics. Ideally, this book provides basic background knowledge of microplastics for oceanographers, ecologists, and climatologists. Provides an overview of the advantages and disadvantages of different methods for sampling, identification, and enumeration of microplastics Contains contributions from world experts with a diverse range of backgrounds, all brought together by a well-known, experienced editor Presents information on microplastics in a unified place, with easy access for the reader

Book Conservation of Marine Resources and Sustainable Coastal Community Development in Malaysia

Download or read book Conservation of Marine Resources and Sustainable Coastal Community Development in Malaysia written by Muhammad Mehedi Masud and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-26 with total page 139 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book addresses a timely and compelling emerging issue related to the conservation and sustainable use of marine resources and the sustainable development of the coastal community. Marine protected areas (MPAs) make a remarkable contribution to the protection of marine communities by providing sustainable livelihoods, deriving financial benefits from the development of fisheries and tourism, as well as by restoring ocean productivity and preventing further environmental degradation. These areas have been considered the cornerstone of a blue economy due to their substantial economic, social and environmental contributions. However, MPAs around the world are severely hampered by a multitude of issues and challenges such as inefficient management, poor socioeconomic conditions and environmental degradation due to human activities, overexploitation of marine resources, degradation of water quality, massive waste production and climate change. These are the main obstacles to economic, social and environmental sustainability. Hence, a collaborative management approach and an integrated management policy framework is urgently needed for the economic, social, political, cultural, technological, and ecological development of coastal communities.

Book The Ecological Paradigm in Seafood Security

Download or read book The Ecological Paradigm in Seafood Security written by Saleem Mustafa. and published by Universiti Malaysia Sabah Press. This book was released on 2021-06-06 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The importance of seafood in global food security and economy cannot be overemphasized. Capture fisheries and aquaculture supply about 154 million tons of fish annually, with a total value of US$217.5 billion. Aquaculture’s contribution to this production and value is 90.4 million tons and US$144.4 billion, respectively. Billions of people depend to varying degrees on seafood for dietary protein. Development of these two sectors has not happened without environmental problems and, therefore, adaptive management is required to ensure sustainability. A major conservation intervention and measures for mitigating the effects of climate change are needed for sustaining the ability of marine ecosystems to withstand the fishing pressure. Likewise, new approaches and technological adaptations will contribute greatly to sustainability of aquaculture. These are the issue which deserve serious attention since, in terms of human nutrition and economy, the role of seafood sector is growing rapidly. This book delves upon the three seafood production systems – capture fisheries, aquaculture and sea ranching, elaborates the pertinent issues and presents scientific reasons for integrating ecological perspectives in management to address some of the major problems constraining their growth. The significance of a paradigm shift by way of removing negatively interacting factors among these sectors with positive synergies with their inherent elements of sustainability is also discussed. Consistency of these approaches with the triple bottom line vision of development instead of exclusive focus on seafood production in isolation with environmental homeostasis is explicitly explained.
