The Battalion participated in the United States conquest of California and in the discovery of gold, opened four major wagon trails, and carried the news of gold east to an eager American public. Yet, the battalion is little known beyond Mormon history. This first complete history of the wide-ranging army unit restores it to its central place in Western history, and provides descendants a complete roster of the Battalion's members.

Download or read book Patriots Prostitutes and Spies written by John M. Belohlavek and published by University of Virginia Press. This book was released on 2017-07-05 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Patriots, Prostitutes, and Spies, John M. Belohlavek tells the story of women on both sides of the Mexican-American War (1846-48) as they were propelled by the bloody conflict to adopt new roles and expand traditional ones. American women "back home" functioned as anti-war activists, pro-war supporters, and pioneering female journalists. Others moved west and established their own reputations for courage and determination in dusty border towns or bordellos. Women formed a critical component of the popular culture of the period, as trendy theatrical and musical performances drew audiences eager to witness tales of derring-do, while contemporary novels, in tales resplendent with heroism and the promise of love fulfilled, painted a romanticized picture of encounters between Yankee soldiers and fair Mexican senoritas. Belohlavek juxtaposes these romantic dreams with the reality in Mexico, which included sexual assault, women soldaderas marching with men to provide critical supportive services, and the challenges and courage of working women off the battlefield. In all, Belohlavek shows the critical roles played by women, real and imagined, on both sides of this controversial war of American imperial expansion.

Book The Mexican War A Military History Research Collection Bibliography

Download or read book The Mexican War A Military History Research Collection Bibliography written by and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography differs from the previous publications in this series since it concerns a specific time in American history, the Mexican War period from 1835 to 1850. From a military standpoint, the victorious efforts of American military forces can be considered as the proving ground for the Army and the Navy that emerged during the Civil War. The annexation of Texas and the acquisition of lands from Mexico predestined both the expansion of the United States to the Pacific and the conflict which divided brother from brother. This bibliography lists pertinent materials to be found in the Military History Research Collection related to this part of American history and is not intended to be a definite listing of bibliographic references on the period.

Book The Main LDS Books

  • Release : 2022-11-13
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 12319 pages

Download or read book The Main LDS Books written by William Alexander Linn and published by DigiCat. This book was released on 2022-11-13 with total page 12319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: William Alexander Linn's 'The Main LDS Books' is an extensive compilation that serves as a thorough introduction and academic resource on the core texts and writings that underpin the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (LDS). This collection not only includes the cardinal works of scripture—The Bible (KJV), The Book of Mormon, The Doctrine and Covenants, and The Pearl of Great Price—but it also encompasses a wealth of doctrinal essays, discourses, and biographies by influential LDS leaders and scholars. With a keen editorial eye, the texts are arranged to present an overarching narrative of the LDS faith and its teachings, shedding light on its theology, history, and the lives of its founders. The scholarly exposition is complemented by an examination of the Church's theological evolution through seminal works, such as 'Jesus the Christ' by Talmage and 'A Rational Theology' by Widtsoe, contextualizing the LDS Church within the broader Christian tradition and American religious history. Linn himself, historically known for his critical views on Mormonism, notably in his book 'The Story of the Mormons,' has here taken on the role of editor to present an unvarnished and comprehensive outlook on Mormon writings. His extensive research into Mormon history and doctrines, as indicated in his past works, equips him with a unique perspective that brings forth the complexities and nuances of the LDS Church. Through 'The Main LDS Books,' Linn offers an inclusive treasury that gives readers the opportunity to explore and understand the LDS faith from its foundational texts, through prophetic teachings and expositions, to the vibrant histories of its leaders. This collection is recommended for scholars, theologians, historians, and anyone with a keen interest in the intricacies of the LDS Church and its canonical literature. It provides an unparalleled resource for comprehensive study, reflection, and discourse on the multifaceted aspects of Mormon thought and leadership. Whether one approaches this collection from an academic, faith-based, or historical standpoint, 'The Main LDS Books' is an indispensable anthology that delivers depth, variety, and scholarly insight into one of the most intriguing religious movements of the modern era.
