Polybius says, that "Hannibal endeavoured to "encourage his soldiers, having one resource for "this, the sight of Italy." Now that object was easily attainable from the passage in question, as the valley of La Tuille is at the foot of it, and would be perfectly visible from the pass itself by the whole army. But when Polybius goes on to say, that Hannibal pointed out the plains of the Po, and explained the situation of Rome itself, we must enlarge the expression so far as to suppose that he called the stream which falls into the Po by the name of that river, which he might as well do, as attempt to point out the situation of Rome itself, with which it seems quite impossible that he could be acquainted, and which, if correctly pointed out, would not have been very encouraging, as the passage is closed up by very high mountains to the S. E., and this is equally the case with the Mont Genevre; which, like the Little St. Bernard, takes a N. E. direction from Savoy to Piedmont. After all, the difficult expressions are nearly superfluous; for, the mere fact of the descent of the waters on the side of the passage opposite to that by which the army had ascended, would sufficiently shew that the great difficulties were overcome, and there was time enough, during the two days' halt on the summit, to explain the fact of their having reached the highest point of their road. But if, after all, these expressions are to be considered as inexplicable, and they certainly are difficult, we must be content with repeating that they are equally so with respect to the other passages mentioned by Polybius, as quoted by Strabo, and they must remain to exercise the ingenuity of future commentators. The account of the descent will form the subject of the next...

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The March of Hannibal From the Rhone to the Alps World, which she was allowed to fashion after her own taste; and, as we are not disposed to object to our language, our literature, or our laws, the greater portion of which we have derived from her, we may be presumed to be satisfied with the course she adopted. What effect might have been produced upon our domestic habits and political institutions, had the Carthaginian triumphed, cannot be conjectured; but it is very certain, if the des tinies of the world had been so reversed, we should not, in every sentence we utter, find words of Roman origin. Under these cir cumstances the Carthaginian expedition into Italy acquires an importance independent of the interest excited by the novelty, hardihood and conduct of the enterprise. Their march upon Rome 18 not only the most remarkable feature in one of the most remarkable wars ever waged, bellum maxime omnium memorabile quae unquam gesta sint, but, in tracing their steps, we feel as if we were ap proaching the crisis of our own destinies; and while we acknowledge the courage and genius of the African general, it is on the side of Rome, the common parent of all Europe, that We lean with a feeling of filial anxiety. Book Hannibal Crosses The Alps

Download or read book Hannibal Crosses The Alps written by John Prevas and published by Da Capo Press. This book was released on 2009-03-05 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When he left his Spanish base one spring day in 218 B.C. with his 100,000-man army of mercenaries, officers, and elephants, Hannibal was launching not just the main offensive of the Second Punic War but also one of the great military journeys in ancient history. His masterful advance through rough terrain and fierce Celtic tribes proved his worth as a leader, but it was his extraordinary passage through the Alps—still considered treacherous even by modern climbers—that made him a legend. John Prevas combines rigorous research of ancient sources with his own excursions through the icy peaks to bring to life this awesome trek, solving the centuries-old question of Hannibal's exact route and shedding fresh light on the cultures of Rome and Carthage along the way. Here is the finest kind of history, sure to appeal to readers of Steven Pressfield's Gates of Fire: alive with grand strategy, the clash of empires, fabulous courage, and the towering figure of Hannibal Barca.

Book excerpt: Hannibal's invasion of Italia in 218 BC was one of the boldest mountain military operations of the Second Punic War, if not the entire ancient world. A master of warfare, he remains an enigmatic figure known mainly from descriptions written by his adversaries. In this unique work of fiction, Hannibal, a Carthaginian, member of a North African banking family and the son of a famous general, is accurately depicted as a strong leader who spent his entire life fighting the Romans. His restless, investigative mind, along with a deep love and appreciation of Greek culture, was nurtured into the Carthaginian war machine by his father and brother-in-law. Hannibal was elected Commander-in-Chief of the Carthaginian Army by the troops in 221. In late spring 218, his army of 65,000 men and 37 elephants left Cartagena in Spain, subdued tribes on the fringes of the Pyrénées Mountains, crossed southern Gaul into the Rhône Basin, and marched across the Alps into Italia. The Warmaker: Hannibal's Invasion of Italia and the Aftermath provides a fictional account of the war master, and what could likely have happened, following his military success in Italia, had he decided to conquer Rome.
