Book Family Maps of Hamilton County Indiana Deluxe Edition

Download or read book Family Maps of Hamilton County Indiana Deluxe Edition written by Gregory A. Boyd and published by . This book was released on 2010-05-20 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 200 pages with 53 total maps Locating original landowners in maps has never been an easy task-until now. This volume in the Family Maps series contains newly created maps of original landowners (patent maps) in what is now Hamilton County, Indiana, gleaned from the indexes of the U.S. Bureau of Land Management. But it offers much more than that. For each township in the county, there are two additional maps accompanying the patent map: a road map and a map showing waterways, railroads, and both modern and many historical city-centers and cemeteries. Included are indexes to help you locate what you are looking for, whether you know a person's name, a last name, a place-name, or a cemetery. The combination of maps and indexes are designed to aid researchers of American history or genealogy to explore frontier neighborhoods, examine family migrations, locate hard-to-find cemeteries and towns, as well as locate land based on legal descriptions found in old documents or deeds. The patent-maps are essentially plat maps but instead of depicting owners for a particular year, these maps show original landowners, no matter when the transfer from the federal government was completed. Dates of patents typically begin near the time of statehood and run into the early 1900s. What's Mapped in this book (that you'll not likely find elsewhere) . . . 2850 Parcels of Land (with original landowner names and patent-dates labeled in the relevant map) 44 Cemeteries plus . . . Roads, and existing Rivers, Creeks, Streams, Railroads, and Small-towns (including some historical), etc. What YEARS are these maps for? Here are the counts for parcels of land mapped, by the decade in which the corresponding land patents were issued: DecadeParcel-count 1820s335 1830s2501 1840s9 1920s1 1940s2 1950s1 1960s1 What Cities and Towns are in Hamilton County, Indiana (and in this book)? Book Hidden History of Hamilton County Indiana

Download or read book Hidden History of Hamilton County Indiana written by David Heighway and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2021 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hamilton County's past harbors sundry strange tales, many of them lost to time--until now. In 1867, a groom disappeared just before his wedding, presumably running away on cold feet. Four decades later, his remains were discovered buried under a shed in a mystery that remains unsolved. In the 1870s, the sheriff marshaled a seven-man posse, including two local African Americans, to deal with "desperados" in an isolated corner of the county. Their heroic efforts swiftly liberated the local populace from the yoke of banditry. A giant wave of ravenous squirrels descended on Central Indiana in 1822 to feast on crops, to the shock and dismay of new settlers. Join County Historian David Heighway for a tour of all things odd and forgotten.

Book When the Fences Come Down

Download or read book When the Fences Come Down written by Genevieve Siegel-Hawley and published by UNC Press Books. This book was released on 2016-04-12 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How we provide equal educational opportunity to an increasingly diverse, highly urbanized student population is one of the central concerns facing our nation. As Genevieve Siegel-Hawley argues in this thought-provoking book, within our metropolitan areas we are currently allowing a labyrinthine system of school-district boundaries to divide students--and opportunities--along racial and economic lines. Rather than confronting these realities, though, most contemporary educational policies focus on improving schools by raising academic standards, holding teachers and students accountable through test performance, and promoting private-sector competition. Siegel-Hawley takes us into the heart of the metropolitan South to explore what happens when communities instead focus squarely on overcoming the educational divide between city and suburb. Based on evidence from metropolitan school desegregation efforts in Richmond, Virginia; Louisville, Kentucky; Charlotte-Mecklenburg, North Carolina; and Chattanooga, Tennessee, between 1990 and 2010, Siegel-Hawley uses quantitative methods and innovative mapping tools both to underscore the damages wrought by school-district boundary lines and to raise awareness about communities that have sought to counteract them. She shows that city-suburban school desegregation policy is related to clear, measurable progress on both school and housing desegregation. Revisiting educational policies that in many cases were abruptly halted--or never begun--this book will spur an open conversation about the creation of the healthy, integrated schools and communities critical to our multiracial future.
