Book excerpt: This textbook is a unique and ambitious primer of nuclear physics, which introduces recent theoretical and experimental progresses starting from basics in fundamental quantum mechanics. The highlight is to offer an overview of nuclear structure phenomena relevant to recent key findings such as unstable halo nuclei, superheavy elements, neutron stars, nucleosynthesis, the standard model, lattice quantum chromodynamics (LQCD), and chiral effective theory. An additional attraction is that general properties of nuclei are comprehensively explained from both the theoretical and experimental viewpoints. The book begins with the conceptual and mathematical basics of quantum mechanics, and goes into the main point of nuclear physics – nuclear structure, radioactive ion beam physics, and nuclear reactions. The last chapters devote interdisciplinary topics in association with astrophysics and particle physics. A number of illustrations and exercises with complete solutions are given. Each chapter is comprehensively written starting from fundamentals to gradually reach modern aspects of nuclear physics with the objective to provide an effective description of the cutting edge in the field.

Book New Aspects of Nuclear Dynamics

Download or read book New Aspects of Nuclear Dynamics written by J.H. Koch and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 1988 Summer School on New Aspects of Nuclear Dynamics took place in the style that by now has become a tradition: a series of lectures by well known scientists on modem topics of nuclear physics, where special emphasis is placed on the didactic aspects of the lectures. In the past few years, we have witnessed a rapid evolution of the field of nuclear physics towards novel directions of research. This development is accompanied by the construction of some of the largest experimental facilities ever built for nuclear research. The subjects covered by the Summer School focussed on two main issues currently under active investigation and which will be pursued with the new facilities: the transition from nucleonic to quark degrees of freedom in the decription of nuclear reactions, and the behavior of nuclear matter as one approaches extreme densities and temperatures. These topics in many respects go beyond traditional nuclear physics and the speakers therefore also included high energy physicists. From the response of the participants it was clear that the program of the school filled a gap in the curriculum of many students. We wish to thank all the speakers for their well organized lectures, which were nicely geared to the level of the school, and for spending extra time on problem sessions and extensive discussions. The organization of this Summer School was made possible by substantial support from the Science Committee of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization.

Book Experimental Techniques in Nuclear and Particle Physics

Download or read book Experimental Techniques in Nuclear and Particle Physics written by Stefaan Tavernier and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-02-06 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I have been teaching courses on experimental techniques in nuclear and particle physics to master students in physics and in engineering for many years. This book grew out of the lecture notes I made for these students. The physics and engineering students have rather different expectations of what such a course should be like. I hope that I have nevertheless managed to write a book that can satisfy the needs of these different target audiences. The lectures themselves, of course, need to be adapted to the needs of each group of students. An engineering student will not qu- tion a statement like “the velocity of the electrons in atoms is ?1% of the velocity of light”, a physics student will. Regarding units, I have written factors h and c explicitly in all equations throughout the book. For physics students it would be preferable to use the convention that is common in physics and omit these constants in the equations, but that would probably be confusing for the engineering students. Physics students tend to be more interested in theoretical physics courses. However, physics is an experimental science and physics students should und- stand how experiments work, and be able to make experiments work. This is an open access book.

Book Nuclear Many Body Physics Dynamics of Mean Field and Clustering

Download or read book Nuclear Many Body Physics Dynamics of Mean Field and Clustering written by Hisashi Horiuchi and published by . This book was released on 2025-01-31 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The atomic nuclei are unique quantum many-body systems that consist of not only protons and neutrons but also hyperons. Hadrons of a finite number are interacting through the strong interaction which is short ranged, having various exchange characters and spin-orbit and tensor forces. The nucleus shows various facets such as independent-particle phenomena, cluster structures, resonance phenomena and collective motions, depending on the excitation energy and the nucleon number combinations. The studies of their proper dynamics, change of structures, nuclear reactions, and interplays of different aspects have been of great interests. Moreover, in recent years, the experimental and theoretical research field of nuclear physics is progressing and expanding to cover rich many-body dynamics under extreme conditions such as high-lying nuclear states, very neutron-rich nuclei, hypernuclear systems, and astrophysical objects. In order to meet the requirements of graduate and undergraduate students, including young researches, the book describes not only the basic aspects of nuclear physics, but also instructive and detailed contents of several research areas which the authors like to emphasize in timely studies of the discipline.

Book The New Aspects of Subnuclear Physics

Download or read book The New Aspects of Subnuclear Physics written by Antonio Zichichi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 800 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1978 a group of 80 physicists from 51 laboratories of 15 countries met in Erice to attend the 16th Course of the International School of Subnuclear Physics. The countries represented at the School were: Austria, Denmark, Federal Republic of Germany, Finland, France, Israel, Italy, the Netherlands, Sweden, Switzerland, South Africa, Turkey, the United Kingdom, The United States of America, and Yugoslavia. The School was sponsored by the Italian Ministry of Public Education (MPI) , the Italian Ministry of Scientific and Technological Research (MRSI) , the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), the Sicilian Regional Government, and the Weizmann Institute of Science. As usual, the Course was devoted to a review of the most out standing problems and results in Subnuclear Physics, with particular emphasis on the new aspects; there were mainly two: supersymmetry and electroweak interactions. In his famous lecture at Erice in 1967, Sid Coleman reviewed "All possible symmetries of the S matrix. " All but one, namely that which tells you: if you have a fermion you must have a boson. This is super symmetry , and this produces the superspace, i. e. an entity which has not only the Einstein-"bosonic" coordinates, but also "fermionic" coordinates. From superspace we get supergravity; and this means that one day we should be able to detect not only the graviton (with spin 2) but also the gravitino (spin 3/2). If we add "flavour", "colour", and "family" as other intrinsic degrees of freedom, we get extended supergravity.
