Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Manufacture of Coke in 1907 In considering the total value and the average selling price for the coke produced in the United States it should be remembered that in many cases the values are arbitrarily fixed. A considerable num ber of the coke ovens in this country are 0 erated by large corpora tions which operate also coal mines and last furnaces, the coke making being really only an incidental art of the business. In such cases the coke product is sometimes charged against the furnace department at cost and sometimes at a figure based upon the cost of coal mining and coke making, plus a percentage of profit on these operations. The value is not fixed by the market price. In other cases the value is estimated upon the average prices for coke of a similar quality produced and sold in the immediate vicinity. These conditions, however, continue from year to year and do not affect com arisons. T e quantity of coal consumed in the manufacture of coke in 1907 was short tons, valued at The value of the coke produced from this coal was a difference of 5, which represents the profits on the coking operations less the cost of manufacturing and the expenses of administration and selling. In 1906 the value of the coal used was and the value of the coke produced was a difference to cover all expenses of manufacture, administration, and profits of $29.
